Later they were presented with a Next of Kin Memorial Plaque. These photographs were taken in 1991, when the St. Albans got its long-awaited bowling club on the Kings Park Reserve in Gillespie Road, Kings Park. The St. Albans Bowling club had just been granted a planning permit for three synthetic greens, each with seven rinks, and a club room complex. Attempts to get a bowling club in St. Albans where first made in 1974. The site was selected but the idea abandoned because of a lack of community interest. The idea of a club was revived in July 1988, and a public meeting held to discuss the proposal. After nearly 20 years of negotiations between the City of Sunshine, the City of Essendon and various other authorities, this cable stayed bridge open in 1991. The Afton Street Pedestrian Bridge is located down stream of where the Commonwealth defense industry once a bridge had to cross the Maribyrnong River, linking the Explosives Factory at Maribyrnong with its waste‑burning and disposal grounds on the opposite bank. The Massey Ferguson Gates are better known as the H.V. McKay Gates. The gates were the ceremonial and security entrance to one of the most important industrial sites in Melbourne’s west, the Sunshine Harvester Factory. They were not just gates; they were the symbolic front door to the Sunshine Harvester Works Factory and carried Sunshine’s industrial identity into the second half of the 20th century. Designed by noted architect Cedric Ballantyne, it is one of the suburb’s most ornate public buildings and a key symbol of Sunshine’s rapid expansion during the inter‑war period.
