This medal was given out to Victorian school children; 325,600 white metal medals were struck. There were also a few VIP pieces in other metals, including two in gold. The medal references Portland, the location of Victoria's first settlement. The Henty brothers, entrepreneur farmers and whalers, established the state's first permanent European settlement in Portland in 1834. Melbourne was established the following year by a party of settlers led by John Batman. In 1934, as Melbourne planned to celebrate the centenary of European settlement, it seemed to some that there was little to celebrate. The financial strains of the depression, unemployment and the scandal of the city's slums all undercut claims of unbridled progress. Perhaps because of such troubles, the organisers of the centenary celebrations tried doubly hard to be positive. The themes of the celebrations were conservative, reflecting the desire of some Melburnians for security in troubled times. The widely promoted image of the 'Garden City' and 'Queen City of the South' emphasised the idea of Melbourne as a very British city. A visit by the Duke of Gloucester, son of George V, the ageing king, provided a reassuring strengthening of Melbourne's imperial connections. The presented view of Melbourne's history stressed the 'myth of the pioneer', embodied in the person of John Batman. Elevated to heroic status, he was reinvented as a courageous pioneer whose life exemplified the rewards of self-improvement. Such a portrayal ignored Batman's dubious 'treaty' with local Aborigines and the less savoury details of his personal life. Melbourne's indigenous people were excluded from this triumphant view of Melbourne's past. The centenary celebrations now seem dated, but the image of Melbourne as a conservative city largely influenced by Britain has been more enduring.Details the settlement of Portland, Melbourne and Victoria, 1834 - 1935Double sided round white metal medal, featuring on front face, the bay of Portland showing a ship in the harbour. Rogers was a well-known Warrnambool identity in the 1930s, 40s and 50s as a horseman and an Army identity. He built a house in Birdwood Avenue, Warrnambool, in 1935 ...These boots belonged to Captain Charlie Rogers of the Australian Army who wore these and ceremonial regalia when he was part of the Guard of Honour during the visit of the Duke of Gloucester in 1934. The visit was part of Victoria’s centenary celebrations and the Duke officially opened the Melbourne Shrine of Remembrance. Rogers was a well-known Warrnambool identity in the 1930s, 40s and 50s as a horseman and an Army identity. He built a house in Birdwood Avenue, Warrnambool, in 1935 and was a long-serving Warrnambool Show official as a judge of equine events. Rogers died in 1961. These items are of great interest as examples of the boots worn by Army Lighthorse personnel in the 1930s. The mechanism for keeping the boots in good condition is of some technological interest. They are also of interest because they belonged to a well-known 20th century Warrnambool person. These are two knee-high brown leather boots with brown laces. The boots are slightly scuffed. Inside the boots are two pieces of red-striped canvas. The boots have wooden inserts to support the boots in storage. These wooden inserts, all varnished, are in four pieces - a solid foot shape to fit in the foot of the boots, two pieces shaped to fit the calf of the leg padded with green felt, one with slight indents at the top and the bottom and the other with a decided groove and the centre piece that has a hole cut out to fit the shape of the other two. This last piece has a wooden handle with a metal attachment. There is only one handle as it can be screwed out and fitted to either wooden insert. On the two wooden inserts ‘R ‘ for right and ‘L’ for left, marked twice on each insert.charles rogers, duke of gloucester, warrnambool -

He did not participate, but in late 1935 he and co-pilot John Thompson “Tommy” Pethybridge flew Lady Southern Cross from India to Singapore in an attempt to break the England-Australia speed record. ...Teenager’s Meccano model in The Age window Whilst Barry’s model is interesting, and he himself is more than interesting – renowned for his lifelong harmonica playing, vaudeville and stand-up comedy as “Mr Versatility” – it is the location of the photo which intrigued us. Was this the photographer’s office, and would it give us a clue to his identity? We thought he might be “Mr Duke” as some boxes of Kodak slides were so named! But we later deduced they were most likely related to the Duke’s Centenary visit to Melbourne. However, they did lead us to The Age archivist Michelle Stillman, who held the key to unlock the photographer’s identity. Louise McKenzie. Photographer notations on slide: "Model warship YiPi 14-12-34 B61" Published: 14 September 1934 The Age p15 Published title: MECCANO CRUISER Published caption: Barry Sandford (17) of Richmond, recently completed this splendid Meccano model of a modern cruiser. It is fitted with four swivelling turret guns, six quick-firers, searchlight, movable anchor rudder and propeller. This model is on view in "The Age" office window, Collins-street. Trove article identifier: http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article205072014 Description: Meccano model of cruiser. Wood panelled office walls and boxes of glass slides can be seen in the background. Research by project volunteer, Louise McKenzie: The second slide we scanned, this photo of Barry Sandford’s Meccano model of a cruiser was of particular interest because it appeared to have been taken in the photographer's studio/office. For the bulk of our project, the identity of the photographer was not known, and we delighted in imagining who they were, whether they were amateur or professional, and what else might be stored in those neatly labelled boxes in the background. But the photo had its own story regardless. A photo of Barry Sandford’s meccano model appeared in the Melbourne AGE on Friday 14 December 1934; it was probably the same photo as the one in our collection – now cropped to remove the background office environment. This background shows shelves of Kodak Panochromatic, and archived boxes labelled “DUKE” with various references: D1 – D23, and one labelled ‘DUKE Not Used’. On a shelf there is a stack of wooden glass plate holders. It wasn't until early 2023 that the photographer's identity was revealed with the help of archivist/librarian at The Age, Michelle Stillman. As for young Barry – what a talent! Meccano was hugely popular at this time. The Melbourne Meccano Club met on a Tuesday at the YMCA building. On 18 August 1933 The Age reported that at their upcoming meeting the model builders “will gain an insight into the oil industry from a lecturer and moving pictures supplied by the Vacuum Oil Co.” Models reflected an interest in rapid technological developments of the time, and also key activities. On 2 November 1934 The Age showed Barry with a model of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith’s Lockheed Altair, “Lady Southern Cross”, which Kingsford Smith purchased with the intent to compete in the MacRobertson Air Race as part of the Melbourne Centenary celebrations. He did not participate, but in late 1935 he and co-pilot John Thompson “Tommy” Pethybridge flew Lady Southern Cross from India to Singapore in an attempt to break the England-Australia speed record. Sadly, on the night of 8 November, they disappeared over the Andaman Sea and were never found. The Harmonica Riff Raff blog provides an amazing and comprehensive commentary on Barry Sandford's life. He is described as a Richmond boy of many talents – model making, archery, comedy, kite making, magic and juggling, as well as a harmonica virtuoso. He was particularly renowned for his harmonica playing and the creation of a two-foot long harmonica, and a tiny, hands-free organ which he played fully enclosed in his mouth. He promoted himself as Mr. Versatility and often featured in Melbourne news articles in the 1930s and 1940s. He remained very active in the entertainment business throughout his life, including as a member of the Four Octaves harmonica group, on the Tivoli circuit, and in vaudeville and stand up comedy. He successfully made the move from stage and radio into television. He died in 1992, still saluted by his peers as the gentleman, Mr Versatility. References: MECCANO CRUISER. (1934, December 14). The sea nymphs were a “who’s who” of Melbourne’s high society young women who often featured in Table Talk, a weekly social magazine with articles about local and overseas notables, their fashions, social engagements and relationships. Pet HMAS Cerberus bulldog mascot “Bruce of Woodside”, accompanied by his sailor handler, led naval parades and events wearing a Cerberus sailor hat, and achieved the rank of three badge Petty Officer. Every day at three bells (13:00 hours), Bruce ate a pound and half of raw steak and two raw eggs. Later, Bruce was demoted to Leading Seaman for “eating a goldfish out of the fish pond at the captain’s residence”. Bruce was demoted again for urinating on the wheels of the Captain’s car. On 28 July 1935, when Bruce collapsed and died of a chill after his customary swim, the papers declared it “to the sorrow of every man in the depot”. Featured in "Newsworthy : Melbourne in photographs 1933-1936" exhibition held at East Melbourne Library from October to December 2023. Research by project volunteer, Fiona Collyer: The names of the sea nymphs: Miss Maisie Cooper, Miss Lorna Dawson, Mrs W. The Naval Pageant, held at the Melbourne Show Ground, 31 October - 3 November 1934, was arranged as part of the Navy's contribution to the Victorian Centenary Celebrations. It was produced and acted by officers and men from the Navy Office, Flinders Naval Depot, H.M.A.S. Squadron, R.A.N.R. Depot, Williamstown, and R.A.N.R. Depot, Port Melbourne. Included were songs and marches, episodes from the life of Captain Cook, drill in honour of Nelson, Drake, Neptune's Court, and episodes from 1914. This was essentially family entertainment - advertisements in the souvenir programme are for ice creams, chocolates and engagement rings. A note about the episode in Cook's life in Tahiti reads 'The dresses worn by Tahitian dancing girls at this period were not considered suitable for the pageant, and historical accuracy has been sacrificed for attractiveness in choosing the raffia skirts of Hawaii.' And there is always the domestic appeal of the broom which accompanies the curler on ice. Accuracy is the great thing in the game.” Arthur Grenby Outhwaite co-wrote popular “fairy” books, illustrated by his wife, Ida Rentoul Outhwaite. Featured in "Newsworthy: Melbourne in photographs 1933-1936" exhibition at East Melbourne Library, October to December 2023. Exhibition caption by project volunteer, Fiona Collyer. Photographer notations on slide: "Curling - Glaciarium B42" Description: Mr A G Outhwaite, Mrs Lorna Moffatt-Pender, Mrs S J Allen and two unidentified people play a game of curling at Melbourne Glaciarium. Research by project volunteer, Fiona Collyer: Mr Arthur Grenby Outhwaite was married to Ida Rentoul Outhwaite, who was regarded as Australia’s greatest children’s book illustrator and they, along with Ida’s sister Annie, collaborated on many books about fairies, elves and koalas. Ida designed four beautiful stained glass windows at St Marks Fitzroy, which are still there. Mrs Lorna Moffatt-Pender née Smith was married to Captain Iain Moffatt-Pender, a former Scottish Rugby Union international player and Seaforth Highlander in WWI, before he emigrated to Australia and became a wealthy sheep farmer. They were both keen curlers and participated in the NZ v Australia bonspiels at Melbourne Glaciarium in 1935. According to The Herald 9/4/1934, Mrs Moffatt-Pender wore fur-lined suede moccasins on the ice and found curling to be "a delightful game for the woman who is not quite as young as she was and wants something livelier than croquet. “There is no reason why women should not play up to 50 years of age. And there is always the domestic appeal of the broom which accompanies the curler on ice. There is a good sprinkling of women among curlers overseas. Accuracy is the great thing in the game.”" The Curling Club of Australia was formed in Melbourne in 1933 with Wimbledon Singles Champion 1907 and 1914, Sir Norman Brookes, the inaugural president. It disbanded in 1939. Curling was invented in Scotland in 1541, where the tradition is that the laird and the crofter are the same on the ice and after bonspiels (curling tournaments) everybody adjourn for a meal of beef and greens. Rocks of granite are sourced from the Scottish island of Ailsa Craig and weigh 20 kg each. Curling is similar to lawn bowls, but on ice. Two teams of four people each take turns to slide granite stones towards a target known as a house. The team with the most rocks closest to the centre of the house, scores points. Curling stones are delivered with a pre-determent rotation so that they curl as they travel – hence “curling”. Opposition teams can throw guards to block the house or take out the opponent’s stone. The sweeping is to gently warm the surface of the ice where the stone will glide, to extend the path of the stone. In 1934, an Australian team which included the Moffatt-Penders, travelled to New Zealand to compete in a bonspiel on frozen Idaburn Dam near Oturehua, Central Otago. New Zealand won. In June 1935, for the Melbourne Centenary, the New Zealand team came to Melbourne to compete for the Silver Fern Trophy. They voyaged on the M.S. Wanganella and the crew nicknamed the curlers the “Ladies Hairdressers”. Australia won two tests and the third test was a draw. At the conclusion of the bonspiel, a secret, centuries old initiation was held at a “curlers’ court” at Anzac House with seven Australian curlers initiated. Afterwards, a dinner was held at the Occidental Hotel (corner of Exhibition and Collins streets, demolished 1950s), where the haggis was carried in under an archway of curling brooms. The “Ode to the Haggis” was recited by “My Lord of the Court”, Captain Moffatt-Pender before he presented each New Zealand team member with a miniature curling stone as a souvenir of their visit. The Melbourne Glaciarium (also known as "The Glaci" or "The Glassy") opened in 1906 at 16 City Road, South Melbourne and was the third largest ice rink in the world at the time. There was seating for 2000 people which was heated with hot water pipes, and they could hire out 1500 pairs of skates. Up to 5000 people could attend hockey matches and ice sports carnivals at any one time. Patrons could watch films in summer or dance to the Glaciarium’s own orchestra conducted by Frank Bladen, who had played with the Pavlova and the Gilbert and Sullivan orchestras. In 1911 John Sousa, creator of the Sousaphone, and his band played a season of concerts. In 1924, the Glaciarium was turned into a makeshift film studio for filming of the interior scenes of "Jewelled Nights", starring Australian actress Louise Lovely, who had achieved success in Hollywood. The basketball and gymnastic competitions for the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games were held there. Public skating sessions always finished with “Till we Meet Again”, a popular WWI song about the parting of a soldier and his sweetheart, written by Richard A Whiting and Raymond B Egan. The Glaciarium closed in 1959 and was demolished after a fire in 1963. References: WOMAN CURLER RETURNS (1934, April 9). The Herald (Melbourne, Vic. : 1861 - 1954), p. 14.
