This important booklet and record of service is first stamped and dated in 1913. It is unlikely to be the first booklet issued as the seafarer Arthur O. Dixon b. 1879 commenced maritime service in 1904 working for the Harrison Line between 1904 and 1914. He enlisted as an RNR officer during WW1. He is recorded as returning to Merchant vessel service with the New Zealand Shipping Co between 1916-1920. He subsequently was employed with Adelaide Steamship Co between 1920 and 1921. All documentation shows him to be regarded as an officer of good character and reliable. On leaving seafaring Mr Dixon eventually took up a smallholding in regional Victoria.Unusually for the early 20th C. era of Mr Dixon's service at sea two images of Mr Dixon survive on ID papers and were included in the gift of papers. Captain Kenneth Aubrey Mickle D.S.O., originally of St Kilda, served in the British Army with the Royal Garrison Artillery during World War I and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) for his leadership and gallantry. He died on 30 July 1919 at the age of 33 after a long illness and is buried at Brighton Cemetery. An article in The Argus newspaper of 6 August 1917 contained the following report: "A cable message received on Friday last announced that the D.S.O. had been awarded to Captain Kenneth Aubrey Mickle, of the Royal Garrison Artillery. Captain Mickle is the elder son of Mr D. Mickle, of Marine parade St. Kilda, and was born in that suburb. He was educated at Queen's College, and after qualifying as a metallurgist, studied at the Melbourne University for three years. There he won the Grimwade Prize and other distinctions. On the outbreak of war Captain Mickle held a responsible position on the Burmah mines. He enlisted in England, and received a commission. He saw much fighting on the Somme, and in the batter of Arras, where he commanded a heavy trench mortar brigade attached to a Highland division. In a letter referring to the last-mentioned battle he wrote:- "My little commando has of late been quite in the limelight. Two of my officers received M.C.'s, one was mentioned in despatches, and five of the N.C.O.'s and men received military medals." Borough of Wangaratta Certificate of Thanks and Apppreciation presented to Private Sydney Spencer Plum. 3431 1st Pioneer Battalion A.I.F, Born January 3rd 1894 at Dockers Plains. Father's name Albert F Plum. Mother's name Mary Plum. He was educated at North Wangaratta and Docker's Plains State School. He was a blacksmith when he enlisted June 12th 1915. He trained at Flemington Racecourse and embarked on SS "Nestor" October 11th 1915. He fought in battles; Peronne, Cambrai, Somme. Being wounded 3 times. He embarked for home per SS "Orontes"; disembarked January 28th 1919 and was discharged March 16th 1919. Later, he entered the service of the Victorian Railways Department.Oak framed certificates were presented by the Borough of Wangaratta to the relatives of soldiers killed in action and returned soldiers who enlisted from the Borough during the First World War. This item forms part of the collection assembled by the historian Dorothy Rogers, that was donated to the Kew Historical Society by her son John Rogers in 2015. The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. George Norman Pockett, who was awarded the certificate was the son of George Pockett , who with his brother designed a number of public parks in Melbourne. George Pockett Snr. was the first curator of the Alexandra Gardens in Kew. John (Jack) Dudley Cullen was the first person from St Kilda to enlist in World War I. He lived at 23 Argyle Street (now Waterloo Crescent), St Kilda. An electrician with three years service with the militia behind him, Jack enlisted on 18 August 1914 at the age of 21. By 20 October that year he was sailing to Egypt on the HMAT Shropshire as a member of the 5th Battery, 2nd Field Artillery Brigade. He served in the Middle East for a short time before being hospitalised with enteric fever and returning home to Australia. White (discoloured with age) Certificate of Discharge form, printed in black and handwritten in black ink on both sides. Front Handwritten notations that Gunner Jack Cullen (service number 1026) of the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade was born at Brighton, Victoria and enlisted in the AIF on 18 August 1914 at the age of 21 years. He was discharged in consequence of "being medically unfit, not due to misconduct." It is recorded that he served 1397 days, 1298 days of which were served overseas. The certificate was signed in Melbourne, Victoria by Captain JM Matthew on 14 June 1918. Back Sections about conduct and character have not been completed and are overstamped in red: "The practice of including a statement of character or special qualifications on the Discharge Certificate has been discontinued from 1st December. 1917." Handwritten notations that, upon discharge, Cullen was 24 years and 10 months old. His complexion was sallow and his hair light brown. He was 5 feet 8 inches tall and had grey eyes. His trade is recorded as 'Electrician (Improver)'. He had a vaccination scar on his left arm and a tattoo on his right. His intended place of residence was 23 Argyle Street St Kilda. Kings certificate of discharge given to Alice Hartridge who served with the Australian Army Nursing Service (AANS) for just over a year in WWI. She was invalided out due to a heart condition, that may have been the result of shelling of the hospital she was working at in Salonika in WWI.Large certificate printed on card that is foxed. Certificate has red and black printed illustrations with a box of text in the lower right hand corner containing some hand written and printed text in black and red. "Army: red and black, with two soldiers (one Australian) shown presenting arms to a seated Britannia. Either side are two columns around which appears the wording “British Isles, Overseas Dominions, Indian Empire, Colonies, Protectorates.” In the bottom right hand corner is the soldier’s name, number and regiment, followed by “Served with honour and was disabled in the Great War. Story is autobiographical and mentions 8th Battalion Pastors Hayden and Paddy O'Shea helping morale there and Padre J J Booth helping the unit the protagonist was attached to.
