Then the labels became a thing, then the blankets had to have a label to join the collection. My favourite labels are by Physician, they had at least 4 different labels over the decades but the best has to be the Lady In Bed logo. Physician, Onkaparinga, Eagley and others matched the colour of the label to the colour of the blanket - a nice touch. Strangely, Castlemaine labels were always sewn on the back of the blanket where all the other mills sewed theirs on the front. To this day I always roll or fold a blanket with its label on display." " For more than 100 years blankets were made all over Australia in over 100 woollen mills. My aim, is to preserve 100 examples of these wonderful pieces of history. Ten years ago I started collecting the iconic Onkaparinga travel rugs, so that on movie nights at home there would be plenty to go around. Everyone had their favourite; even the cat had his own – a small red tartan one. Keeping an eye out for those travel rugs at op-shops and markets, collectable stores and bazaars, led to noticing vintage blankets. I'd never really thought about them before or paid much attention though of course I had grown up with them at my grandmother's. When I discovered my first Laconia cream blanket with blue stripes, my eyes just went gaga. Well that was it, I was hooked and since then over 500 blankets have passed through my hands. These common, everyday items, found in all households for so many decades, were traditional engagement gifts. Pairs were prized wedding presents turning into family heirlooms. They were fashionable dressers of beds, givers of warmth, bestowers of security and reliability. The comfort found in these objects resonates with almost all of us; we grew up with them ourselves or fondly recall them in a grandparent’s home. There is no modern replacement with the integrity of these old blankets, many of them now older than most of us. They are romantic, sensible, special, familiar, nostalgic and nothing else feels so appropriate in so many situations. No offense to the great Aussie doona, but from hippie to hipster, at a music festival, picnic, campsite or couch, a vintage blanket is something coveted by all. This industry that employed tens of thousands and must have been such a huge contributor to the economy is almost completely lost now. Blanket Fever is an ode to everything that came before: the land, the sheep, the shearers, the hands, the mills, the weavers, the designers, the distributors, the department stores. To the grandparents that gave them, the people that received them, the families that kept them; thank you. I’m passionate about my collection of Australian blankets manufactured in mostly Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania from the 1930s to the end of the 1960s. The collection has blankets from each of these four decades representing the styles and fashions of their time and includes dated advertisements which help determine the eras the blankets are from." Kew Historical Society IncAward, Kew Heights v Albury Junior Challenge Tennis Trophy, 1999-2001
... Kew Heights v Albury Junior Challenge Tennis Trophy...Perpetual trophy won by members of the Kew Heights Sports Club in 2001, playing against Albury in Junior Challenge matches during 1999-2001....KEW HEIGHTS VS ALBURY JUNIOR CHALLENGE / 1999 ALBURY / 2000 ALBURY / 2001 KEW HEIGHTS...Kew Heights v Albury Junior Challenge Tennis Trophy Award Award ...Sports Clubs in Kew in the final decades of the 19th century and in the early 20th century were often umbrella organisations with facilities for a number of sports. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew and Auburn Heights Clubs assembled important collections. These historically significant and large collections were donated to the Society in 2020. The collections include manuscripts, pictures, trophies, plans, honour boards etc. The combined collections of the four sporting clubs making up the collection number hundreds of items that are historically significant locally. They are also significant to the sporting history of the greater Melbourne area and to the sports of lawn bowls and tennis in Australia in the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection illuminates two of the Victorian historic themes - 'Building community life' through forming community organisations and 'Shaping cultural and creative life' by participating in sport and recreation.Perpetual trophy won by members of the Kew Heights Sports Club in 2001, playing against Albury in Junior Challenge matches during 1999-2001.KEW HEIGHTS VS ALBURY JUNIOR CHALLENGE / 1999 ALBURY / 2000 ALBURY / 2001 KEW HEIGHTSkew heights sports club - 397 barkers road - kew (vic), kew heights tennis club - competition trophies -

... Marshwood Perpetual Challenge Trophy...The Marshwood Challenge Trophy was first awarded in 1974. ...Marshwood Perpetual Challenge Trophy / Presented to the / Royal Melbourne Show / by / Mr & Mrs Maurice Cox / 1974 / for the best / Shetland Pony /...Melbourne Royal Melbourne Showgrounds Gate 5, Building 13 Langs Road Ascot Vale melbourne The Marshwood Challenge Trophy was first awarded in 1974. ...The Marshwood Challenge Trophy was first awarded in 1974. This valuable trophy was donated by Major Maurice Charles Cox and his wife Betty, who were devoted to the Shetland Pony. Why is it called Marshwood? The Coxes both worked to maintain high standards of the Shetland breed. They did this in Great Britain by starting The Marshwood Stud in 1922. They also both took on the role of president of the Shetland Pony Major Stud Book Society and started a scheme to use only the best stallions for breeding. Major Cox and Australia The Coxes promoted the Shetland pony elsewhere too. Major Cox judged Shetland ponies at shows in Australia, Sweden and France. He probably last judged in Australia at the Sydney Easter Show in 1981. By this time Major Cox must have been in his late 70s as he was a reserve cavalry man in 1918. The silver-footed salver trophy was made in Scotland in 1916. It is possible that Major Cox brought it with him to Australia when he was judging Shetland ponies at the Royal Melbourne Show in the 1970s. The Marshwood Challenge Cup was awarded for the best Shetland pony at the show. Major Cox drew on his experiences examining Shetlands all around the world when he wrote The Shetland Pony (first published in 1965). (Mandy Bede)Silver tray on four feet. Warrnambool and District Historical Society Inc.Trophy, Junior Challenge Shield 1936, 1932
... Junior Challenge Shield 1936...‘Warrnambool Junior Football League’ ‘Junior Challenge Shield presented by J.V. Fairbairn Esq. ...There is a wire attached to the back of the shield for hanging on a wall. Junior Challenge Shield 1936 Trophy ...This junior football shield was given by James Fairbairn (1897-1940), a prominent Western District pastoralist, aviator, local politician and Federal Cabinet minister. He was killed in a Canberra air disaster in 1940. The shield shows that several football teams, including West End, Russells Creek and East Warrnambool won the shield in the 1930s. In 1936 the shield was won outright by West End Football Club. This club, founded in the late 19th century, played in Western District Leagues until 1946 when it joined the newly-formed Warrnambool District Football League. In 1971 it merged with the Allansford Football Club to become the West End-Allansford Club and in 2002 the name ceased to exist when the team name was changed back to Allansford Football Club. This trophy is of interest as a football trophy given over 80 years ago and as a memento of the Warrnambool West End Football Club, a team no longer existing. The sport of Australian football has been, and still is, highly prominent in the Warrnambool district with football first played in the town in 1861. This is a wooden shield with nine silver-coloured metal discs affixed to the shield with metal pins. Eight of these discs are shield-shaped. All of the discs have etched inscriptions. The discs are somewhat stained and the wooden shield has traces of paint on it. There is a wire attached to the back of the shield for hanging on a wall. ‘Warrnambool Junior Football League’ ‘Junior Challenge Shield presented by J.V. Fairbairn Esq.
