This is the program of the 2014-5 exhibition at the Warrnambool Art Gallery, ‘From the Sacred to the Profane – The Challenges and Possibilities of Renaissance Art’. This exhibition was a joint project between the National Gallery of Victoria and the Warrnambool Art Gallery and was officially opened in December 2014 by the Director of the National Gallery of Victoria, Tony Ellwood. This program is of interest as a souvenir of an exhibition in Warrnambool that was an important one as it featured historical and valuable works of art from the National Gallery of Victoria. This is a sheet of paper folded to make six sides. One side has a plasticized surface. The pages have a black background with white and red printing on five sides and a colour photograph of a painting on the front page. This is a baby’s feeding bottle. No information has been found on ‘The Challenge’ brand. It is an interesting design. This bottle has no known local provenance but is retained as an interesting example of an early 20th century item. It will be useful for display. This is a clear glass bottle designed to lie on its side. One side of the bottle has been flattened to give it a boat shape. The neck and top are slightly raised when the bottle is lying on its side. This cup came from the Warrnambool APEX Club . The first APEX Club was founded in Geelong in 1951 and Warrnambool APEX Club was the fifth Club founded in 1951. This was a community service organisation with members aged between 18 and 45. Warrnambool APEX Club closed in 2011. It is not clear what this trophy was awarded for but the local APEX Club was involved in debating and public speaking competitions.This cup is retained as an important memento of the Warrnambool APEX Club (now closed).This is a silver plated cup. It has a a half oval shaped cup on a stand. There are two large handles on either side. In October 1982 the Australian Transsexual Association (ATA), supported by the Gay Solidarity Group (GSG), staged the first transgender protest in Australia. The protest was held to challenge a recent judgement against two transgender women, who a Magistrate ruled were men. Rev Robert Hodgson: His father was Robert Hodgson Snr, of Congleton, and Mildred (née Porteus) in early 1773. He was baptised on 22 September 1773 at St Peter's Church, Congleton. Hodgson was a close relative (by marriage on his father's side and by blood on his mother's side) of Beilby Porteus, Bishop of London of whom Hodgson wrote a biography of Porteus. On his mother's side, he was a descendant of Augustine Warner Jnr., who presided as the Speaker of the Virginia House of Burgesses during the time of Bacon's Rebellion (Warner served before the Rebellion in 1676, and after the Rebellion in 1677.) Hodgson was educated at Macclesfield School and Peterhouse, Cambridge, where he graduated with a BA as 14th Wrangler in 1795. He was appointed rector of St George's, Hanover Square for over forty years, from 1803 until his death in 1844. Bishop Beilby Porteus: Beilby Porteus 8 May 1731 – 13 May 1809), successively Bishop of Chester and London was a Church of England reformer and a leading abolitionist in England. He was the first Anglican in a position of authority to seriously challenge the Church's position on slavery. Porteus was born in York on 8 May 1731, the youngest of the 19 children of Elizabeth Jennings and Robert Porteus ( 1758/9), a planter. Although the family was of Scottish ancestry, his parents were Virginian planters who had returned to England in 1720 as a result of the economic difficulties in the province and for the sake of his father's health. Educated at York and Ripon Grammar School, he was a classics scholar at Christ's College, Cambridge, becoming a fellow in 1752. In 1759 he won the Seatonian Prize for his poem Death: A Poetical Essay, a work for which he is still remembered. He was ordained as a priest in 1757, and in 1762 was appointed as domestic chaplain to Thomas Secker, Archbishop of Canterbury, acting as his assistant at Lambeth Palace for six years. It was during these years that it is thought he became more aware of the conditions of the enslaved Africans in the American colonies and the British West Indies. He corresponded with clergy and missionaries, receiving reports on the appalling conditions facing the slaves from Rev James Ramsay in the West Indies and from Granville Sharp, the English lawyer who had supported the cases of freed slaves in England. In 1769 Beilby Porteus was appointed as chaplain to King George III. He was also Rector of Lambeth (a living shared between the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Crown) from 1767 to 1777, and later Master of St Cross, Winchester (1776–77). He was concerned about trends within the Church of England towards what he regarded as the watering-down of the truth of Scripture and stood for doctrinal purity. He was, however, happy to work with Methodists and dissenters and recognised their major contributions in evangelism and education. In 1776, Porteus was nominated as Bishop of Chester, taking up the appointment in 1777. He was Renowned as a scholar and a popular preacher, it was in 1783 that the young bishop was to first come to national attention by preaching his most famous and influential sermon. In 1787, Porteus was translated to the bishopric of London on the advice of Prime Minister William Pitt, a position he held until his death in 1809. As is customary, he was also appointed to the Privy Council, and Dean of the Chapel Royal. In 1788, he supported Sir William Dolben's Slave Trade Bill from the bench of bishops, and over the next quarter-century, he became the leading advocate within the Church of England for the abolition of slavery, lending support to such men as Wilberforce, Granville Sharp, Henry Thornton, and Zachary Macaulay to secure the eventual passage of the Slave Trade Act in 1807.Beilby Porteus was one of the most significant, albeit under-rated church figures of the 18th century. His sermons continued to be read by many, and his legacy as a foremost abolitionist was such that his name was almost as well known in the early 19th century as those of Wilberforce and Thomas Clarkson but 100 years later he had become one of the 'forgotten abolitionists', and today his role has largely been ignored and his name has been consigned to the footnotes of history. His primary claim to fame in the 21st century is for his poem on Death and, possibly unfairly, as the supposed prototype for the pompous Mr. Collins in Jane Austen's novel ”Pride and Prejudice”. The Methodist Girls' Comradeship was formed in 1918 with the first Branch being in Bondi, NSW. There were three sections: Junior Rays, 8 - 11 years; Senior Rays, 11 - 15 years and Comrades, 15 years and over. The aims of the MGC was to "challenge young people with the saving power of Jesus Christ and provide avenues of Christian service" and "to provide for the spiritual, social, physical and educational welfare of the members". This painting was purchased at an exhibition at Australian Galleries in 1968. It originally hung in Robin Boyd's office in East Melbourne, and was only brought to Walsh St after he died in 1971. The Australian Galleries was established by Tam and Anne Purves in June 1956. Robin Boyd designed the Purves family home in Kew in 1967. The painting was purchased at an exhibition at Australian Galleries. This Melbourne institution was established by Tam and Anne Purves in June 1956. Robin Boyd designed the Purves family home in Kew in 1967. After hanging this artwork in the living room, Robin Boyd arranged to have the three-seater sofa in this room reupholstered in red (previously yellow) to match the Wood's painting. Tony Woods won a Harkness Scholarship in 1968 and travelled to the USA - he abandoned figuration after leaving Australia. Presented to the Major The Honorable F. T. Sargood together with the V.R.A. Challenge Cup on 8 December 1876. The cup was competed for by all the volunteer corps in Victoria. The following extract is from The Argus (Melb), Sat 9 Dec 1876, page 9 https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/5912315 The second quarterly official inspection of the St Kilda Battery was held last night by Colonel Anderson. The gun drill was held in the orderly-room, and afterwards the corps was put through field movements in the drill around. At the termination of the inspection Colonel Anderson expressed his satisfaction at the manner in which the drill had been performed. Colonel Anderson then presented Major Sargood with the Victorian Rifle Association Challenge Cap, which had been won by the St. Kilda Battery three times. The cup has been competed for the last 12 years, and in that time the cost of the ammunition used in the contest and markers' fees amounted to about £3.000. The value of the cup is 20 guineas. An address to Major Sargood was then read by Captain Hearn. On receiving the cup Major Sargood said that he was afraid from the state of his health he would either have to retire from command of the battery, or obtain a long leave of absence. He said that six years ago he bad been presented with a sword which he wore that evening, and he was glad to see that there was no diminution of the goodwill then expressed towards him. Photos of abseiling down the Gas and Fuel building that were on the corner of Flinders St and Swanston St. It was an event for Legacy Week 1989. See also the training that occurred prior to the event - photos 00486 and 01409. Ron Barassi abseils for Legacy joined by staff member Carol Shaw and Legatee Peter Heeney. A label states it "was a Legacy versus Radio personalities abseiling challenge". Media team was Fox's Wally (Paul) Weissel and Ken Cavanagh and Triple M's Andy McClean. Aided by Williamstown Commando Company with training at Nidrie Quarry. Ron Barassi participated in many events for Legacy over the years, he had been a young Legatee after his father was killed in action at Tobruk in World War II, aged 27. Scrap book compiled by Neville Gower from Nov. 1992 to June 1997. Primarily consists of newspaper clippings glued to the pages involving the Ballarat Tramway Museum. Also contained are other items of relevant interest, such as BTM brochures. Pages number in pencil by Warren Doubleday 2/2001. Where relevant some items contained in this book have been separately catalogued to enable easier reference. Y2K / the year 2000 / The millennium bug / was commonly used to refer to a widespread computer programming shortcut that was expected to cause extensive havoc as the year changed from 1999 to 2000. Instead of allowing four digits for the year, many computer programs only allowed two digits (e.g., 99 instead of 1999). As a result, there was immense panic that computers would be unable to operate at the turn of the millennium when the date descended from "99" to "00". The Bug presented a formidable challenge to the problem-solving skills of local government officials. Lacking a cure-all that will work for every municipality, local officials must develop their own solutions to meet their community's unique needs.
