Carlisle Cathedral The Priory near the cathedral was founded in 1122 by King Henry I. There were earlier buildings on the site. Ten years later the priory church became the Cathedral and the Kind created the diocese of Carlisle. The building is constructed of red sandstone. Celebrated architect Ivo de Raughton who lived a few miles south of Carlisle designed the intricate masonry. Many interesting features are recorded about Carlisle Cathedral in tourist brochures and its homepage, however they do not mention the many mason’s marks clearly visible on the stone columns inside the Cathedral. There have been hundreds of marks recorded, some being similar to those on the Yarrowee Channel in Ballarat. The Argus Melbourne Friday 10 July 1908 QUEENSCLIFF, Thursday. - After a series of successful experiments in dredging the eastern end of the South Channel, the suction dredge Pioneer sailed this after-noon for the Gippsland Lakes, where work awaits her. During operations in the South Channel the dredge worked on a sandy and shell bottom in depths ranging from 35ft. to 40ft. with unqualified success, performing the work much quicker and cheaper than the bucket drudge John Nimmo, which is still employed. The drags would have been leaving St George's Church of England in Mont Albert Road. The foundation stone for St George's Church of England, Mont Albert was laid in 1886 on land donated by Edward Dyer and the first service was preached in January 1887. From 1904 until 1907 it was known as Holy Trinity, Surrey Hills. The original church was weatherboard and replaced by a brick one in the Gothic Revival style which was designed by local architect George J V Blackburne, who also designed the Wesleyan School at Surrey Hills. The building was partly funded by donations, profits from a bazaar and concert, and other people donated furnishings. The church had boundaries along Mont Albert Road and St Georges Road. In 1998 the Church was sold and converted into a complex of units. Its current address is 19 St Georges Avenue, Mont Albert. The annual Sunday School picnic was held at Hampton and drags were the usual mode of transport. 'Lugano' was built in 1893 for William Wilson, a prominent stonemason and importer of marble fireplaces. In 1903 it became the home of William Holmes who was Chief Electrical Engineer for the Victorian Railways. He designed the electrification of the Melbourne suburban network. 'Lugano' stayed in the Holmes family until the 1930s. The annual Sunday School picnic was held at at a variety of locations and drags were the usual mode of transport. Donor information is that this was taken as the congregation prepared to depart for at Hampton on the picnic held on 25/2/1922. There are 2 copies: the original donated print and an enlargement. The original was mounted on card with photo mounts along with 506, 871, 872, and 873. It measures 13 cm x 9 cm.Black and white photo of 4 'drags' (horse-drawn hooded carriages) lined up in Mont Albert Road near the corner of St George's Avenue, in readiness for departure for the Sunday School picnic. The carriages are loaded with people and decorated with flags. The front carriage has a material sign attached to the side; the top line of writing is not decipherable, but the bottom one reads "SURREY HILLS". Four men stand in the road, which has bluestone curb and channelling. In the background is 'Lugano'.On rear in ink: "S.S. picnic to Hampton / 25th. Feb. 1922" and in a different hand in biro: "At Mont Albert. Henry Sebire returned to Guernsey on the "Caledonian" in 1888. He came back to Australia via sailing ship to Jersey and then to the coast of France. Travelled by train to Paris and Marseilles, and left for Australia on "Oceania". Arrived in Melbourne in December 1888. The "Oceania" was built in France in 1884 - 4162 tons, barque rigged, 415 feet long, 585 HP. Sank in the English Channel on 24th September 1916. On loan from Alvan Sebire - Great Grandson of Henry and Martha Sebire. On an azure background, all the islands are printed and named on the tablecloth, as well as the names of the towns, villages and the bays of both Jersey and Guernsey. There are four rectangular pictures, surrounded by a white border, representing significant places and buildings, as well as others, without borders, depicting old and modern ships, a compass, a coat of arms and the distinctive Jersey and Guernsey cow.There is a red and white border, almost at the edge of the azure background and in each corner is printed a white anchor and rope. This plan was for the sale of parcels of land from the Lerderderg Park Estate property in 1911. Advertising for the sale appeared in the Bacchus Marsh Express newspaper through July of 1911. The property was situated only a few kilometers from the township of Bacchus Marsh. The agents for the sale were L. A. Fairbairn & Co.Lerderderg Park Estate was a significant and early colonial property in the Bacchus Marsh area. This plan provides details about the first time the property was subdivided for sale. The Sanyo VHF colour television is thought to have been assembled in Wodonga, as Sanyo was one of the international companies that set up business in Wodonga in the 1970s as part of the de-centralisation of industry and continued operation into the 1980s. The Sanyo Australia Pty. Ltd. factory in Wodonga opened in 1974 with 35 staff and production peaked in 1976-1977 when it employed 360 people. In the first ten years 350,000 televisions were assembled from Japanese parts, however by 1984 the number of staff had reduced to 112 and the factory closed in 1987. All Sanyo televisions were then imported from Japan. The Sanyo VHF colour television has local, state and national significance as it is thought to have been assembled in Sanyo Australia's factory in Wodonga. Reverend John Ashley was a key initiator of missionary services to seafarers isolated and confined to moored ships or islands with families in the Bristol Channel of the 1830s. Attention was also focussed by other individuals, groups and churches in ports and led eventually to the establishment of the Mission to seamen, London which in turn inspired establishment of similar services in other countries and ports. Rev'd Kerr-Johnson who arrived in Australia was appointed by a Bethel Union of non-conformist churches in late 1856 and delivered the first shipboard service in 1857 for the Victorian Mission to seamen. refs: 1895-1905 Epitomised history...
