Article in Trust News. In 1988 Nunawading City Council purchased 2.5 hectares of an historic property which has been owned and occupied by the Matheson Family since 1914. It is one of the last working orchards in Nunawading. A Management Plan includes an environmental living program which aims at providing an overnight experience for children, giving both an experience how the property was operated as an orchard in the 1920s and 1930s. St Patrick's Day is celebrated on 17 March. A St Patrick's Day March was held in Ballarat. According to the Ballarat Courier of 03 February 1916 a festival was organised in Ballarat to celebrate St Patrick's Day: "ST PATRICK'S DAY FESTIVAL - There was an excellent attendance last night at St. Patrick's Hall to make a rangments for the annual celebration of St. Patrick's Day Festival. Mr A. W. Hager occupied the chair. The date allotted by the V.R.C. committee, Friday, 24th March, was accepted, and the festival will take place on that date, with the usual race meeting on the Miners' Racecourse, and entertainment at Her Majesty's Theatre in the evening. The secretary was instructed to appeal for the hearty co-operation of the different societies, and to ask for a holiday on 24th March. The amount of stakes and the racing programme were left in the hands of racing committee, whose report will be dealt with at the next meeting. The following officials were appointed to carry out the celebrations:--Chairman, Very Rev. Father Kennelly; vice-chairmen, Rev. Father Henneberry, T. J. O'Loughlin, and A. W. Synopsis: “In WW1 Melbourne a pioneering network of women at the Mission to Seafarers called the Ladies Harbour Lights Guild supported sailors who risked their lives at sea. The documentary “Harbour Lights” tells the remarkable story of the Ladies Harbour Lights Guild and the lives of seafarers in early 20th century Melbourne. It focuses on Melbourne’s iconic Mission to Seafarers building, its connection to the Great War and to a unique community of ships crew and volunteers. Christopher HEADLEY Born York, England Arrived Australia 1974 Chris Headley studied at York School of Art before majoring in Ceramics at the Central School of Art in London, learning to throw with (the late) Michael Casson and hand-build with Gordon Baldwin. Chris graduated in 1973 and set out for Australia. He travelled overland across Europe and Asia, through Turkey, Afghanistan and Iran. He was invited to attend a traditional wedding in Pakistan by someone he made friends with on the bus trip from Isfahan to Teheran, got lost several times in India and ran out of money in Thailand. Eventually, a year after leaving England, he arrived in Australia, where he has lived and worked ever since. He undertook his Master’s degree at the Australian National University, graduating in 1991; and in 1999, with Dr Owen Rye as his supervisor, gained his PhD from Monash University, Victoria. (http://www.christopherheadley.net/#!about) While artist-in-residence at the Arts Academy, Federation University in 2009 Chris was spotted dragging his ceramic figures and photographic equipment across mullock heaps near Ullina, around Lake Wendouree and inside the Art Gallery of Ballarat where he was photographing Mount Warrenheip. These figures were used in the photographs. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. Installed in the Westgarth Shopping Strip, the artworks include aerial, street level and inlaid pieces. The aerial installations consist of eight pairs of steel dragonfly wings. The street level series feature ten sculptural pieces of welded steel depicting enlarged body/skeletal parts of fauna that are indigenous to the area. The inlaid artworks are a series of stainless steel mosaic in the pavement.Five pairs of steel dragonfly wings mounted on eight painted PTC power poles.
