Sports Clubs in Kew in the final decades of the 19th century and in the early 20th century were often umbrella organisations with facilities for a number of sports. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew and Auburn Heights Clubs assembled important collections. These historically significant and large collections were donated to the Society in 2020. The collections include manuscripts, pictures, trophies, plans, honour boards etc. The combined collections of the four sporting clubs making up the collection number hundreds of items that are historically significant locally. They are also significant to the sporting history of the greater Melbourne area and to the sports of lawn bowls and tennis in Australia in the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection illuminates two of the Victorian historic themes - 'Building community life' through forming community organisations and 'Shaping cultural and creative life' by participating in sport and recreation.Framed and glazed club colours and badges of three bowling clubs - Kew, Auburn Heights, and Kew HeightsKEW HEIGHTS / AUBURN HEIGHTS / KEWkew heights sports club - 397 barkers road - kew (vic), bowling clubs - kew (vic) - uniforms

A newspaper report the Financial Review (2 October 2001) recorded that: "Agents Jellis Craig sold the 2,583sq m East Kew Bowling Club on Windella Avenue for $1.55 million at an auction on the same day. Purchased by an offshore developer, the site is protected by an agreement which limits it to only six units or houses. The bowling club was one of 23 owned by the local Boroondara council, of which 10 have been closed down in the past 10 years. Some are used by community groups but several are derelict."One of the few pieces of memorabilia in the collection deriving from the East Kew Bowling Club.East Kew Bowling Club membership medallion. This work emerged from a fascination with the invisible forces that shape life beneath the ocean’s surface known as the Bonney Upwelling. Found off the coast of Portland, Victoria, and part of the Great South Australian Coastal Upwelling System, this annual cyclic event draws cold, nutrient-rich water up from the depths and transforms the region into one of Australia’s most productive marine ecosystems. The composition layers flowing, interwoven currents with the presence of the animals they sustain—blue whales, fur seals, little penguins, and vast swarms of krill—suggesting that life here is inseparable from motion, temperature, and chemistry. The work attempts to render this ocean as a living system—restless, cyclical, and interconnected. From microscopic plankton to the largest animals on Earth, all are interdependent and bound together by the shifting flows. Visually, the work balances illustration and abstraction. Scientific data, oceanographic maps, and current models inform the directional lines and gradients while the animal life surges through teeming water. This approach invites the viewer to consider not just what is seen, but what is usually unseen: the forces that sustain this abundance. Ultimately, this artwork draws on the data that explains this oceanographic anomaly in rational scientific terms to elicit something more vital and ephemeral. In translating measured patterns into movement, colour, and form, the work seeks to evoke the lived energy of the system: a fleeting, dynamic convergence that exceeds its own description and invites a deeper sense of wonder. Marine life set in front of a blue and white patchy background. Seawater swirling. Each animal is outlined in black. In front are two whales, one with mouth open and the other with mouth closed. There are four seals and several crustaceans and other plant life. There are swirling black lines and in the bottom lefthand corner there is an 8 pronged spoke and above it a semi circle with five arrows pointing in different directions. The image has the feel of a scientific diagram. some of the smaller images of marine life anmd plants are in red.Bottom left: Rush Hour: Bonney Upwelling Portland Vic 14/20 Bottom right: Beth Croce '17bonney upwelling, portland, blue whales, marine life, scientific, diagram, print, female artist
