The Lightning was an American-built sailing ship and it is believed the rope block was part of the ship’s rigging or included as cargo. The plaque on the block mentions that the item was, “as supplied by Burrows Ship Chandlers” in 1869. The plaque could also mean that the rope block was supplied by the firm Burrows, Ship Chandler and Shipping Stock, as a replacement block for the Lightning. The American vessel named “Lightning” was a 3-masted, fully rigged extreme clipper ship. She was commissioned by James Baines, of the Black Ball Line in Liverpool, England, during the time of the Australian Gold Rush for the trade of passengers and cargo between England and Australia. Her load listed on early consignments included livestock and animals, including rabbits sent to Thomas Austin of Barwon Park, Winchelsea, Victoria, where the challenging association between Australia's agriculture and the imported rabbits started. The Lightning was built in 1854 by shipbuilder Donald McKay, in East Boston, USA. She was described as spacious and comfortable and regarded as one of the smartest ships of the time. The vessel set many speed records for her voyages and became one of the most famous of racing clippers and one of the fastest ever launched. In 1854, with Captain 'Bully' Forbes and Mate 'Bully' Bragg, Lightning made the return trip from Melbourne to Liverpool in only 64 days, 3 hours and 10 minutes; a record. Captain Enright became the new Master of LIGHTNING soon after this record was established and was regarded as one of the finest mariners in the Australian trade. One of Captain Enright's innovations was to publish a ship's paper called "The Lightning Gazette". What is of additional historic interest is that captain "Bully Forbes" had left the Lightning to captain the ill-fated Schomberg. In 1857, for a very brief time under Capt. Byrne the Lightning was used as a troopship, taking British officers and soldiers, stores and ammunition, to fight in India. In 1859 she then returned to her normal route between Liverpool and Melbourne, apart from 1867 when she made a special trip between Melbourne and Port Chalmers in New Zealand. In 1869 the Lightning was sold to Thomas Harrison of Liverpool, and continued to sail for the Black Ball Line. Master of Lightning, Captain Henry Jones, sailed her to Geelong in October 1869, and whilst docked, he had her loaded with a cargo of wool, copper, wire, tallow and other goods. At about 1 am on 31st October 1869, whilst still docked and fully laden, a fire was noticed on the vessel. Efforts to extinguish the fire were unsuccessful, so she was towed to the "Lightning Shoals" in Corio Bay, where she eventually sank, losing all cargo but no lives. The Lightning is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register (Ref S 415). The vessel is historically significant for being one of the fastest wooden ships ever built. it was notable as the first clipper built in the USA for British owners and as a shipping disaster in Geelong's history. The Lightning spent its whole career carrying cargo and immigrants from England to Australia. Its documented voyages give us a snapshot into shipping history, not only of Australia in the mid-19th century but how the world's commercial transport functioned o promote trade and emigration during this time.Large ship's block, wood, with two wooden sheaves and fibre straps, eye and thimble. The SS. Edina was built on the River Clyde by Barclay Curle & Co. for Leith, Hull & Hamburg Steam Packet Co. She was launched on 4 May 1854 as a 3 masted steamer. She initially carried passengers and cargo across the North Sea. She then went onto serve in the Crimean War (HMS Edina), the American Civil War (c.1862), took fortune hunters to New Zealand during the Gold Rush and ferried passengers and cargo up the Queensland coast and across Victoria's Western District. In 1880 she began to trade between Geelong and Melbourne, traveling in her later years between Portarlington and Williamstown, via Geelong and Point Henry. She averaged 312 trips a year with 100 passengers a day. She made her last trip in 1938.The notice from the S.S.Edina likely relates to her use as a passenger boat, operating between Geelong and Melbourne from 1880-1938. The object is significant for its historic connections to Victoria's early travel networks by sea and to the S.S. Edina as a long serving vessel. A black board with white stenciled lettering set in a wooden frame. On the front is a Notice pertaining to the SS Edina. On the back of the board are 4 paintings of the SS Edina, showing her in 1875, 1884, 1917 and 1938."S.S EDINA NOTICE passage tickets are issued to & accepted by passengers subject to the conditions printed on the back of the ticket. When Hamilton Hume and William Hovell arrived at the bay in 1824 they met with the local Wautharong people who referred to the bay as "Jillong" and the surround land "Corayo", but by the time the area was surveyed in the late 1830s the Aboriginal names had been swapped. The names "Corayo" and "Jillong" had since been Anglicised to "Corio" and "Geelong".Corio Bay is an important harbour and leisure location in the West and continues to attract development such as the new Tasmania Ferry Terminal. An Admiralty Chart of Geelong Harbour revised in 1954Geelong Harbour Map Ref: 2731geelong, corio, admiralty charts

Anieura. Four-masted wooden schooner, 1328 tons. Built California, 1918 as the Oronite. Reg. Melbourne, 1928. Lbd 236.5 x 42 x 29. Last captain, de Carteret. Stripped of anything of value at the Yarra Street Pier, Geelong, in 1932; burnt to recover her copper and brass, and sunk off Avalon Bach, two kilometres east of Point Lillias. She had been seized for debt. @ Her wreckage is scattered and overgrown, covered in light silt in 4 metres. [NWR],[LC],[NSC]A relic from the broken up Barque 'Anieura' in 1932/33: BARQUE ANIEURA. Left to Sink in Mud. GEELONG Monday -The hulk of the barque Anieura, which has been idle in Corio Bay for more than four years, was towed to a spot near Bird Rock on the northern shores of the outer harbour on Monday. The Anieura was built for the timber trade and made a journey to Australia. The owners then decided that the vessel was unsuitable for this trade, and she was sold to an Australian firm. The ship was placed in Corio Bay, and remained at anchorage for about three years before an effort was made to sell her. This being unsuccessful most of the fittings, were disposed of, and the hulk was taken to Fletcher's pier to be out of the way of shipping. The Victorian Salvage Co's offer to the Geelong Harbor Trust to dispose of the hulk was accepted. The 300 tons of road metal ballast was removed, and a quantity of timber taken out. The vessel was towed through the channel this morning and run aground near Bird Rock just outside of the north-east extremity of the bar where it is away from shipping. Stanley Couzens, a Gunditjmara man and long-time Geelong resident, painted the story 'Ceremonial Hunting Grounds in the You Yangs' upon commission from the Geelong Wool Combing Company. It depicts hunting in the You Yangs, today referred to as its original Wadawurrung name Wurdi Youang, the distinctive granite peaks that overlook the region. In 1993, Couzens’ painting was translated into a pattern by textile designer Jenny McMahon. It was then turned into a jumper using wool sourced entirely from the region. It was fully processed, from fleece to fabric, in Geelong. The jumper was given to attendees at the opening of the Geelong Wool Combing company on 10 December 1993. Among the many guests, was the Prime Minister Paul Keating.Mens knitted jumper depicting an image of the You Yangs and Corio Bay on the front of the jumper in colours including brown, green, cream, black, with white and gold stitching. In the early nineteenth century larger Australian wool producers sent all their wool by sailing ship to London, where colonial auctions were held in November, January, February and March. Wool bales were carried from the farm on drays or wagons pulled by bullocks, horses or camels to port warehouses. In these times, wool transport could take anything from a week to six months. Ships, such as the Lightning, were then loaded and raced each other to get to London ahead of their rivals. The wooden ship 'Lightning' was destroyed by fire while loading wool at Geelong 31 Oct. 1869. Scuttled in Corio Bay and the remains later blown up. Reputed to be one of the fastest sailing ships. Two short sections of flooring cut for distribution during Deakin Universities ‘Open Day’ in December 1994. This was during the conversion of Dalgety Wool Store to Deakin University’s Woolstore Campus. These small pieces of timber are part of Geelong’s history and were salvaged from the Dalgety Woolstores during the renovations. Hundred of meters of ironbark, red gum, pine and other timbers, some more than a century old, were reclaimed from the site and have been recycled as furniture and featured building materials for the woolstore campus. The old brick stores, located on a formerly neglected section of the Corio Bay shoreline, now house the administration and chancellery, architecture and building schools, information technology services, the student union, a cafeteria and, as the focal facility, a Great Hall seating 1500 people and acoustically tuned for symphony orchestras. The refit was developed from the existing grid of substantial timber columns and beams extending over 52,000 square metres. This framework was filled with lightweight panels to enclose workplaces and removed in some parts to establish courtyards, atriums and streets. The brick facades were redefined with new doors and double-glazed windows in proportion to original fenestration. Bright colours and industrial finishes identify the new insertions.Square sections of redgum lumber cut into floorboards. The sides of the lumber have a grove cut on one side and a matching section to fit within this groove on the other side. This has been done to ensure the floorboards have a tight and consistent fit with one another. The bottom of the lumber also has an additional grove running through the middle of the redgum. On top, one of the sections of lumber has three nail holes, which travel all the way through to the bottom of the wood.deakin university, dalgety wool store, red gum
