One of earliest buildings in Cowes main street. Largely painted wares advertised on front and two sides of H Gullifer's Corner Store.Corner store, Thompson Avenue. No neighbouring shops. Emerald's first permanent store was built in1898 on the corner of Monbulk and Belgrave-Gembrook Roads on the present-day site of Woolworths. It was known as The Corner Store. The owners in chronological order were Le Juge, Jones, Stewart, Elwood, Searles and Russo. This invoice donated by the daughter of its recipient is dated 28 November 1974 at a time when Searles were the proprietors. It shows the customer was allowed to carry a small debt. The donor recalled that a number of Emerald people, including her parents, were not well off and were allowed to do this by the store. The invoice also has a list of items for sale at that time.This 1970's Emerald general store invoice invites some interesting comparisons with present-day supermarkets in relation to what they stock and how they relate to customers. Intersection of Officer and Townsend Streets, Mortlake. Early street lamps and the telegraph line from Hexham to Mortlake Post & Telegraph Office in Shaw Street erected in 1862 are visible. Mount Shadwell Store purchased by A. S. Stewart in the mid 1880's from Clarke & Co. of Geelong. In this photograph one can see the previous two stores - the building in the centre would have been the original Store owned and built by the Rae & Robertson circa 1860 and sold to Grieve & Benn in 1862 - the bulding on the right hand side was the business premises of the Mount Shadwell Store owned by Grieve & Benn later used as a storeroom when the building on the right was erected by them to become the main business premises which John Grieve sold to Clarke & Co. of Geelong in 1882 and they to A. S. Stewart It still operates as a supermarket in 2011.Even though in 2011 a facade now covers the entire front of these three building, the original buildings are still within the fabric of the store and includes a cellar in front of the oldest building. Mary Hayes, nee Ryan, ran a drapery and fancy goods store at the corner of Sussex and Clyde Streets, in the building first occupied by Bennett Butchers, and later by her father James Ryan who ran a hairdresser's shop and billiard room there. View of the old Burgoyne store looking south-east across Main Road, Eltham near the intersection with Bridge Street. Original painting donated to Eltham Library. Greensborough resident Ted Dalton (d 2016), migrated to Australia from Liverpool, England, in 1965. He commenced formal tuition in paitning and drawing in 1973, with Leslie Sinclair at Molesworth and later Bill Caldwell and Maxwell Wilks and then Graham Moore. Dalton won many prizes with his paintings. In his most successful period, 1988–1989, he won five monetary prizes in Rotary Shows at Kew, Preston, Kilmore, Seymour and Ivanhoe. During the same period he won the Ernest Suter Award, in an internal exhibition of the Heidelberg and District Artists’ Society. He produced paintings and drawings ranging from pastel and oil paintings of landscapes, through figure studies and portraits to still life studies and miniatures. Dalton was amember of the Diamond Valley Arts Society.
