Copy probably made by Murray Comrie in the 1970s.Monochrome photograph depicting four sisters from the Bool family of Tarnagulla, dressed up for the 1904 'Poster Fair', wearing labels relating to local stores and household products. In May 1904, a ‘poster fair’ was enjoyed by attendees at the the Victoria Hotel and Theatre, Tarnagulla. It included a range of stalls where ‘about 30 young ladies, who had charge of the various stalls, wore costumes with advertisements of local and metropolitan business firms’ to raise funds for the new Church of England parsonage. This ledger is a record of the sales of John Stewart from 1890 to 1905 in the districts of Warrnambool, Garvoc, Hamilton and Horsham. John Stewart was a printer and store keeper in Warrnambool from 1890 to 1895. He was also connected to several hotels in the district- the Pieter Both Hotel in Warrnambool in Raglan Parade, ( his wife was the Licensee in 1897), the Yallock Inn in Garvoc ( his wife was the licensee 1899), and hotels in Hamilton and Horsham.The Ledger is of some interest as it contains the names of many local people at the end of the 19th Century. It is a handy research tool. This ledger has 542 pages. It has a hard cover with a dark green cloth cover with leather binding on the spine and corners of the cover. There is a red label on the spine with gold printing and patterning. The inside of the cover has a mottled pattern. There is an alphabetical index at the front. The pages have red ruled lines and hand written entries in ink. This photograph was taken during Linton's centenary celebrations at the end of 1939. The double storey building on the left is Criterion House, originally a draper's store. The upper level of this building was at one time (post WWI-early 1920s) used as a hospital. Dr Donaldson (Snr) owned the block of land on the corner of Sussex and Grant Streets, Linton. He had a ten-room house set on the back of the block (where the block backs on to Surrey Street), with a large barn fronting Sussex Street. Other identifiable buildings in the photograph are Ball Brothers blacksmith's shop, the Royal Standard Hotel on the corner of Sussex and Clyde Streets, the Shire Hall, Criterion House and Joseph Shepherd's store. Samuel Steele lived in Linton from at least 1860 and built the drapery store known as Criterion House in 1862/1863. His first three children were born at Linton. Samuel Steele moved into Ballarat in the late 1860s and established a drapery store in Sturt Street. He afterwards lived at Stawell and ran businesses there and in Ararat.Scan of original photograph which shows the head and shoulders of an older man who has a short beard. Photograph is dated to 1930s as G. G. Bennett is shown trading at the store formerly owned by Joseph Shepherd/Alf Darling. The photograph is undated, but is thought to have been taken before 1921 (when Joseph Shepherd died and his store was inherited by Alf Darling). Criterion House is occupied by a "Cash Dealer" - suggests photograph was taken before Murrells had their newsagency there.
