This pamphlet was produced by the Liquor Trades Defence Union. Mr John James Liston was secretary to the Union and appointed to this office in 1906. He directed many campaigns against prohibition. The Temperance movement began in Australia in the earl 1800s and advocated for moderation rather than abstinence. In response to this many hotels were converted to 'Coffee Palaces' in the late 1800s and did not serve any alcohol. During World War I early closing was introduced in many states including Victoria. This led to the advent of the 'six o'clock swill' where people would rush to drink as much as they could before closing. Unions such as the Liquor Trades Defence Union opposed this due to workers losing jobs and lost earnings.The pamphlet illustrates the history of temperance in Australia and the part that trade unions played in the fight against prohibition. Two-up is a traditional Australian gambling game played with two coins tossed in the air, and players bet on whether they will land two heads, two tails, or odds (one of each). It’s one of the most iconic pieces of Australian cultural history. Two-up became famous among Australian soldiers in World War I, especially at Gallipoli and on the Western Front. It was simple, portable, and boosted morale. After the war, it became a symbol of mateship and remembrance. Two-up isn’t just a game, it’s a ritual of Mateship, Luck and Chance, Remembering diggers and Community gatherings. Because of this, Two-up is legally allowed to be played in most Australian states on ANZAC Day, even where gambling laws would normally prohibit it.Two‑up has a surprisingly rich little history in Sunshine, Victoria, because of the suburb’s strong links to WWI and WWII service, the RSL, and the old industrial workforce culture where the game stayed alive long after it faded elsewhere. Two-up was played in lunchrooms at the large factories throughout the district, such as at H.V. McKay’s Sunshine Harvester Factory, ICI & Wunderlich. It was played at private gatherings in back sheds, houses, paddocks, behind buildings and hotels around Albion, Braybrook, Matthews Hill, Sunshine & Sunshine North, and informally at the early Sunshine RSL. As the game was illegal, there are many reports in the local papers of places being raided by the police and fines being imposed by the courts on players that were caught playing the game. Allan Doney was a tailer by profession, born in July, 1900 in East Ballarat. His family later moved to Dimboola in the Wimmera where his interest in photography began with his first camera, aged 15. He married and moved to Bendigo in 1949 where he set up business as a tailor. The 1950's was a time of great change in Bendigo, which was not well recorded photographically. Doney took and printed high quality photographs of events, scenes and buildings. Allan Doney (1900–1987) was a passionate amateur photographer with a keen eye for everyday life in and around Bendigo. From the 1950s through to the 1970s, he photographed streetscapes, events, industries, and ordinary moments that together form an extraordinary visual record of the region. Allan’s extensive body of work offers remarkable insight into the Bendigo region’s social and cultural history. Doney sold his collection of prints and negatives to the National Trust for $2,000 in 1980 - comprising 14,000 negatives and 3,000 prints. For more than three decades, the negatives were loaned to the Bendigo Library (Goldfields Library Corporation). In 2024, the long-standing loan with the Bendigo Library concluded, and a new loan agreement for the negatives was established with the Bendigo Historical Society. In early 2025, using archival materials purchased by the NTAV, a dedicated team of Bendigo Historical Society volunteers carefully and methodically re-housed all 14,000 negatives into archival-grade folders, greatly enhancing their long-term preservation and accessibility. Mary MODEEN (1953- ) Born United States of America Lives Scotland Mary Modeen is an artist/printmaker and interdisciplinary academic who also works in artist books, installations, and recently, in video and sound. She is also an academic of nearly 30 years full-time experience in higher education, residing in Scotland where she convenes the Art, Philosophy and Contemporary Practices at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, University of Dundee. Modeen’s research has several threads: perception as a cognitive and interpretive process, and place-based research, which tends to connect cultural values, history and embodied experience. In 2000, while a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Ballarat (later Federation University Australia), Mary Modeen was commissioned to create a sculpture in a Public Art context for the campus. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. During periods of harsh persecution, Hmong women developed a way to record their history by weaving it directly into their clothing. Called "pajntaub" , which means "flower cloth", and it was traditionally practiced only by the women of the community. Using a variety of complex stitching techniques, they created intricate geometric patterns. These designs were not just for decoration on clothes, collars and baby carriers. At times when their own language was suppressed, these symbols served as a form of communication and cultural documentation, with history hidden in the very pleats of their skirts. This tradition took on a new powerful meaning in the late 1970's after the wars in Southeast Asia. Forced into refugee camps in Thailand, Hmong women began creating "story cloths". These were larger tapestries that documented their lives, their traditions, and their harrowing journey from their homelands to the camps. These story cloths became a way to tell the world what had happened to them .
