As an incentive to improve school work and develop student leadership, from 1927 former Clarendon PLC student Nellie Sutherland (Coulter) donated a silver cup each year. The cup soon became a prestigious award. It was awarded to the girl holding the leading place in 'work, sport and above all moral character'. The cups were awarded annually until to 1951. Mrs Sutherland made these gifts partly to remember her school days under Mrs Kennedy and because the school in Mair Street was built on the site of her former home. But the main reason was in memory of her two brothers Jason and Les killed during World War 1. In 2001 the Junior School Parent Group funded the ongoing award for a Year 6 student. The award criteria in 2001 were 'general excellence in academic achievement, respect for and from others, a positive role model, involvement and initiative'. From 1884 College Cups were donated by the Old Collegians Association for the outstanding athlete amongst ‘present boys’ and ‘past boys’. It is obvious from written records and the inscriptions on the cups themselves that two cups were awarded to students – a Junior Cup and a Senior Cup.The Old Collegians Cup was a prestigious award presented in the early days of Ballarat College for private retention. At the Annual Sports Day almost the entire athletics program was devoted to the heats associated with the awarding of the College Cup (Senior) and the Old Collegians Cup. Competitors had to run in three handicapped races over 120, 250 and 440 yards respectively. So high was the regard for the winner of the Senior Cup that Old Collegians would refer to past events as happening 'in the year X won the College Cup'. The Ballarat Old Collegians Association notes in The Minervan 1913 that "each year the Association presents to the College Sports committee the College Cups (Senior and Junior), the Old Collegians Cup and the Veterans Plate. Raymond Dawson Vaughan attended Ballarat College under Principal Major John Garbutt until 1909. He was one of the first students to enrol in the new Agricultural Science Course at Ballarat High School in 1910. he completed this course with credits and high honours. After leaving school he was involved in agricultural and pastoral pursuits at Lorcan in the West Wimmera. Ray served in WW1 and was killed in action, aged 25, on 9 June 1917 at Messines. His plaque in No 2041 in the Ballarat Avenue of Honour. Charles Walker, Son of Samuel Walker, 112 Lyons St S; Prev S School 33 Upper VI Class entered Ballarat College in 1885, peer year 1889. He was awared the Old Collegians Cup in 1887. The cup was returned to the school in 1985 by Mrs Hilda Rehfisch. The Old Collegians Cup was an athletic award and highly prestigious. Edmund Fox Moore (7/4/1884 - 4/10/1917) entered Ballarat College 6 March 1899 (peer year 1901). Son of Edmund Notley Moore and Josephine nee Fox, of 'Myra' Sturt St, brother of Otuel Alan Moore (peer year 1903). Previously studied at Haileybury IV Form. Edmund served in World War I and was killed in action in Belgium in October 1917. This item is the 1900 Ballarat College Senior Cup which was won by E F Moore. The Senior Cup was awarded to boys who were good 'all-rounders'. In 1926 three houses were established at CPLC - Cairns (Green), Kennedy (red) and Walker (Blue). Interest in inter-house competition was encouraged by the presentation of an antique silver cup, known as the Trawalla Cup. This was awarded at the end of each year to the House gaining the most points in work, sport and conduct. in some years Clarendon had inter-house play competitions as part of deciding the winner of the Trawalla Cup. From 1974-1996 the cup was presented at Speech Day to the Girls House with the best academic results. The Cup was the gift of Mrs H P MacKenzie, of 'Trawalla', a large property west of Ballarat.
