John Henry Lockett OAM (22 January 1891 – 25 May 2002) was the oldest man ever in Australia when he died aged 111 years, 123 days. As one of the last surviving veterans of World War I, he was acclaimed as a national hero during the last decade of his life. Lockett was born in the small Victorian town of Waanyarra, near Bendigo. He left school aged nine to work on a local farm. Later, he worked for his uncles in the Mallee. On 24 March 1916, he travelled to Mildura to enlist in the Australian Imperial Force. Jack Lockett was one of many Mallee settlers who pioneered farming in early part of the 20th century. A road was named in his honour and a plaque placed by the family to commemorate Jack and Doll Lockett's contribution to settling the Linga area. He enlisted and served in World War One and returned home in 1919. He selected land near Linga after deciding to make a living as a farmer. He married Maybell Ingwersen in 1923 and built the house on the farm. Jack and Doll raised four children on the farm and eventually retired to Bendigo leaving the farm to their children. Jack Lockett was born at Waanyarra on 22 January 1891 to his single mother Mary Lockett. Waanyarra was a gold mining town west of Bendigo but was later abandoned as the gold mining decreased. Jack Lockett grew up on his grandfather's property and later his stepfather's before he left home to work at age thirteen. He survived World War 1 and then went farming with his uncles and later bought land at Linga. Doll Ingwersen was born at Scoresby on 5th July 1897.
