This item is from a collection donated by descendants of John Francis Turner of Wodonga. Mr Turner was born on 6 June 1885. He completed all of his schooling at Scots Boarding School in Albury, New South Wales. On leaving school, he was employed at Dalgety’s, Albury as an auctioneer. In 1924 John was promoted to Manager of the Wodonga Branch of Dalgety’s. On 15/03/1900 he married Beatrice Neal (born 7/12/1887 and died 7/2/1953) from Collingwood, Victoria. They had four daughters – Frances (Nancy), Heather, Jessie and Mary. In 1920, the family moved from Albury to Wodonga, purchasing their family home “Locherbie” at 169 High Street, Wodonga. "Locherbie" still stands in Wodonga in 2022. The collection contains items used by the Turner family during their life in Wodonga. Celluloid dolls were very popular in the late 19th to mid 20th century. They were lighter and less fragile than porcelain dolls and were therefore more durable. Celluloid is one of the first synthetic plastics ever created. It is made from wood products that include cellulose nitrate and camphor. First created in 1863, it was a popular material to make items as diverse as jewellery and dolls from the 1870s through the 1930s. Celluloid is flammable, deteriorates easily if exposed to moisture and can be prone to cracking and yellowing.This item comes from a collection used by a prominent citizen of Wodonga. Unable to determine a specific company that manufactured this doll many Japanese companies manufactured dolls of this type for export and these were only marked "Nippon" to show country of manufacture. These dolls marked this way were in production from around 1920 until 1941 when Japanese toy factories began to manufacturing items for war.Unable to be determined provenance relating to specific Japanese manufacturer. Head has long brown curly mohair wig attached into a hole in the pate; several doll-sized hairpins hold hair in place. Face has open mouth showing two porcelain front teeth, brown eyes of hand blown glass and hand painted features. Back of neck has two pressed holes above maker’s mark. Doll has removable white silk socks and brown shoes with tied ankle strap and hard soles. Doll is wearing old fashioned cream coloured knitted woollen singlet, cream flannel vest with draw-string cotton bodice and scalloped edge. The doll also has a more modern style white cotton dress with pink smocking. Jack Lockett was born in 1891 at Tarnagulla and left school at age of 12. He worked various jobs until World War 1 and volunteered. He served in various campaigns in Europe and later returned home and commenced farming in the Mallee near the small town of Linga. It was wheat but included sheep and cattle. Jack and his wife 'Doll' raised their family on the farm and then retired to Bendigo. Jack Lockett died at the age of 111 and was called by then Prime Minister, John Howard, as a 'priceless national treasure' when presented with the Knight of the Legion of Honour by the French Government. The area of Linga is situated on the Mallee Highway between Ouyen and the South Australian border. It is 11 kilometres west of Underbool. Linga may be a derivative of the traditional name Lar-gni (camp of). Fourteen Miniature Models of Nurses from Primitive Era to 1980's. They were Dean Nancy Long's idea and she had them made. They were used for "Careers" information when visiting High Schools. In 1972 when the uniforms changed from traditional to more modern trend they created interest for prospective trainee nurses. Jack Lockett was born at Waanyarra on 22 January 1891 to his single mother Mary Lockett. Waanyarra was a gold mining town west of Bendigo but was later abandoned as the gold mining decreased. Jack Lockett grew up on his grandfather's property and later his stepfather's before he left home to work at age thirteen. He survived World War 1 and then went farming with his uncles and later bought land at Linga. Doll Ingwersen was born at Scoresby on 5th July 1897. The Tarax Show was an early Australian children’s TV program on GTV-9 in Melbourne running from 1957 to 1969. A favourite character of the show was the mischievous doll Gerry Gee and the Melbourne ventriloquist Ron Blaskett. When celluloid was invented and first came to prominence in the 1870s, dolls were nearly all breakable and fragile--bisque and china dolls were easily shattered and papier mache and wax easily ruined. So doll companies started experimenting with celluloid to mould dolls. By the early 1900s, celluloid dolls were plentiful, since celluloid was easily moulded and generally inexpensive. Celluloid is one of the first synthetic plastics. It is a plastic created from wood products that includes cellulose nitrate and camphor. In his diary, he records: his fond attitudes towards the people of Vietnam; Civil Aid projects such an orphanage that the RAAF looked after; money and exchange rates; his work as a translator; National Heroes day Celebrations; scenery and daily life around Phan Rang (US Air Base) in Ninh Thuan Province.A nineteen page typed diary.
