This dressing gown was made from a patchwork quilt begun around the 1880s or 1890s by the daughters of William and Polly Hodgens, owners of the Adelphi Hotel near Montague Station, South Melbourne. The quilt became a communal project, added to over many years by the Hodgens children, relatives, friends and guests. Together, they filled the colourful patchwork with images and figures from their everyday lives, giving us a unique glimpse into the world of early Melbourne.Crazy patchwork dressing gown made from a patchwork bedspread. Issued to Service Personal whilst on active service to render first aid if required.Unopened rectangle packet covered in off-white cotton (or similar) containing a bandage and gauze pad. The front of the package is printed with an inscription identifying it as a 'First Field Dressing' along with a list of contents and instructions for use in blue writing. Text crossed with diagonal red arrow from bottom right hand side pointing to top left corner. FIRST FIELD DRESSING Tear apart the uncemented corner as indicated by the arrow and remove the paper. Take the folded ends of the bandage in each hand, and, keeping the bandage taut, apply the gauze pad to the wound and fix the bandage. In case of head wounds when respirators have to be worn, care should be taken to adjust the pad so that it does not interfere with the fit of the face piece. The dress was worn by Dorothy Hirst (nee Cust) who was married to Cedric Hirst of the Godfrey Hirst Woollen Mills. Dorothy was born in 1908 and passed away in 2010 aged 102. Sleeveless teal and blue gown with sash at the waist and tie at back. Clear, silver and blue beaded detail is featured on the front and bodice.
