This book has been a local library copy. It contains information on Australian airmail cards and letters and their value in 1990 and was first produced in 1937. This is a 1990 edition and is number 764 of a limited edition of 1000 copies and is signed by the author. It has some local Warrnambool interest as there is information on the first aeroplane flight to Warrnambool by Basil Watson in 1917 and the 1922 Qantas flights between Charleville and Cloncurry with the pilots Paul McGinness and Hudson Fysh. Paul McGinness, regarded as the founder of Qantas, was born and reared in Framlingham, a small settlement near Warrnambool. This book is of minor interest as it has information on early airmail in Australia and includes information on two people connected to Warrnambool’s history - Basil Watson, the first person to fly a plane to Warrnambool and Paul McGinness, from Framlingham near Warrnambool, the founder of Qantas Airways.This is a hard cover book of 307 pages. It has a blue cover with five images of early airmail cards and black printing. It contains printed information on airmail letters and cards and images of many of these letters and cards. This building is still intact at the Nhill Aerodrome. Some of the infrastructure is also in place or can be evidenced by its foundations.The Aeradio building was built on the present aerodrome in 1937. This was one of only sixteen buildings of this type built across Australia and it housed radio communications and guidance equipment. The building and its equipment were part of a comprehensive system of radio towers, signalling and meteorology equipment aimed at providing safer navigation for aircraft travelling throughout Australia. The facility closed in the 1960sThis photo is significant due to it having been taken soon after the building was constructed. About the author: Born in Melbourne, David Crotty has worked in museums since 1984. He has a long-standing interest in aviation history and has worked as a curator with the Australian War Memorial and the RAAF Museum. He is currently (2010) a curator in the History and Technology Department of Museum Victoria. Story of John Robertson Duigan and his flying creer, from his early years as a Melbourne school boy to his heroic activities as a pilot on the Western Front in World War One. The Hollywood film stars pasted on to one side of this paper are of no historical interest to our Society. The four paper items attached to the other side relate to the pioneer aviator, Basil Watson. He flew the first aeroplane to come to Warrnambool in January 1917. Watson flew from Point Cook to Warrnambool in one hour 55 minutes, an Australian cross-country flying record at the time. He had built his own aeroplane which was 18 feet long with a wing span of 26 feet and it had a 7 cylinder 50 H.P. rotary Gnome engine. In Warrnambool he amazed the crowds with his dare-devil aerial acrobatics, looping the loop 14 times over the Warrnambool Racecourse. Watson also brought several letters with him, making him the bearer of the first aerial mail to Warrnambool. Sadly Basil Watson died when his plane crashed at Point Cook in March 1917, just two months after his record-breaking flight to Warrnambool. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society has in its collection the small galvanized bucket seat which came from Watson’s plane and the original first air letter written by the Mayor of Melbourne to the Mayor of Warrnambool. These four items are of considerable historical interest as they are souvenirs issued at the time of Basil Watson’s aviation exploits in the early 1900s and Watson is of great importance in the aviation history of Warrnambool.This is a piece of paper (possibly from a scrapbook) with one torn edge. Pasted on to the paper on one side are newspaper photographs of early Hollywood female film stars. This is an early 20th century example of a chronograph, a watch with stopwatch functions. Chronographs date from the early 19th century and were used particularly in aviation, astronomy, diving, automobile and other racing contests and artillery firing and with more sophisticated designs are still used today.This item has no known local provenance but is retained for display purposes because of its age and its exceptional qualityThis is a chronograph, a display watch which also has a stopwatch function. It has a white face with black markings and Roman numerals and a gauge around the outer circle with numbers from 0 to 300. The face is covered with a glass frame. One hand and its pin are loose in the glass. The watch case is gold-coloured with a heavy ornamental pattern around the sides. At the top of the case is a ring for attaching the watch to a chain or belt. The Auliff-Perrin Life belt dates back to WW1 but was used early in WW2 by the RAF and RAAFKhaki cover with shoulder straps and inflation nozzle.

This Gear box universal, with its Cone assembly ( inc lens) in conjunction with Magazine 500 exposures unit ( see CAT 5561) is part of the F22 aerial camera assembly. As an assembly, the type F22 aerial camera came into RAF and RAAF service c1942. It was used by the RAF over Europe and by the RAAF extensively through the Sth. West Pacific area of operations, during WW2. This type of camera was used through the Vietnam war up to the early 1980's. The F22 camera assembly when mounted in the reliable Canberra aircraft, did aerial survey work in PNG, Indonesia, Malaysia and Sumatra and the Australian mainland. This type of camera was used in Spitfires, Mosquitos, Avro Lincolns and Canberra aircraft.Heavy, metal construction. The base is a rectangular box shape and mounted to that is a funnel shaped tube. Inside the tube are numerous small baffles around the sides painted matte black. The box has a 7 pin electrical connector. The box section can be opened by releasing catches. It has a timber base. Near the mouth of the tube, outside, is a panel with a slot and indentations F5.6 F8 F11 F16.There is a tape label near mouth if tube with writing embossed "LENS S/NO 2767849" The box has a label "GEARBOX/UNIVERSAL. The Oakey Army Aviation Centre is a training facility formed in October 1943 at Oakey, Queensland. It was built with the purpose of providing a maintenance facility: the units would erect, repair and insect aircrafts and engines. At the end of the war in 1945, the depot was used to store surplus aircraft. In early 1946, the RAAF Station Oakey was disbanded and categorised ‘to be retained but not maintained’. Since then, the RAAF Station Oakey facilities have been used few times for some minor activities. Although there are no information relating to the owner or usage of the cup; it holds historic significance for its direct link with the Australian Army Aviation Centre in Oakey and its involvement in World War II; and more generally for its link to the Australian Army.Large white cup with a handle; decorated with a blue ink symbol (displaying a crown and below it, a bird handling two swords) and blue ink inscriptions (from the Army Aviation Centre Oakey). This is a booklet produced in 1967 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the aeroplane flights of Basil Watson in 1917 (the Mount Gambier to Melbourne 1917 Experimental Air Mail). In the 1967 Mount Gambier/Melbourne air mail flight re-enactment the aircraft was from Aviation Services (Hardingham) Limited, a Piper Cherokee, and on board was Douglas Watson, Basil Watson’s nephew. Basil Watson was a pioneer aviator who built his own plane which had a 50 H.P. Rotary Gnome engine. In October 2011 the Ballieu Government announced funding cuts to public and private technical training organisations as a cost saving measure. The government reduced funding for seven subject areas including business and clerical, finance and hospitality, totaling $300 million across the state. During a visit to Ballarat on 15 June 2012 Premier Ted Ballieu was met by hundreds of protestors angry at the TAFE cuts. It was expected that the Ballarat TAFE sector would be cut by $20million (or 40%), and up to 60 TAFE programs would be cut. A report in 'The Australian' on 01 June 2012 projected the TAFE cuts would result in the loss of almost 2000 jobs across the state. 'If the projections are correct, Victorian college redundancies would dwarf those in manufacturing and aviation, matching the worst predictions of job losses across Australia's entire banking sector.' Ballarat's National Tertiary Education Union (NTEU) and the Ballarat Trades and Labor Council (BTLC) are following up their earlier protest campaigns with a monster meeting to be held at Ballarat Trades Hall, Camp Street on Sunday 8 July. Sir Charles Edward Kingsford Smith (1897-1935) is one of Australia's most known Australia’s fliers. Born in 1897 at Hamilton, Qld. He spent his early life in Sydney enlisting in the AIF in 1915. He served at Gallipoli before transferring to the Royal Flying Corps in 1916. He was shot down and wounded in the foot in 1917. In 1929, Kingsford-Smith flew from Australia to England in the record-breaking time of 12 days, 18 hours. The following year he completed an east–west crossing of the Atlantic Ocean in 31 hours, followed by a record-breaking solo flight from England to Darwin in 10 days. He was knighted for services to aviation in 1932. He made the first west–east trans-Pacific flight in 1934. In 1932 was selling joy-flights at ten shillings a trip. Most of his flights, including the joy flights, were made in the three-engine Fokker plane known as the 'Southern Cross', now preserved in a special display area at Brisbane Airport. In late 1935 Kingsford Smith took off on the second leg of a flight from England to Australia with John ‘JT’ Pethybridge. The plane and pilots were never seen again, believed to have crashed into the sea at night somewhere off the coast of Burma. White ticket stub with black ink. In October 1872, State School 1111 Box Rise opened on the corner of Worthing Road and Dane Road. In order for this school to open, School No 442, a Wesleyan School, on the corner of Wickham Road and Chapel Lane, had to agree to close to meet pupil number requirements. Charles Sadgrove was head teacher of the new State School when it opened on October 1st 1872 and he remained until 1878. The school was renamed South Brighton in 1887 to accord with the nearby railway station which opened around that time. The main part of the present building dates from 1890. By the early 1900s the school had been extended to the north. . The school contains a plaque for Harry G Hawker, one of the pioneers of aviation, who attended the school in the closing years of the nineteenth century. The school was renamed Moorabbin in 1909.During the 1940s and 1950s population in the area surged and school enrolments peaked to over 800 under head teacher CS Lansell. Enrollments decreased to 470 in 1969. By the 1990s however, enrollments began to increase again. VH-UQM (Miss Currie) was the second commercial plane to operate out of Western Junction (after Miss Flinders), the first owned by the Holyman Brothers, which eventually become ANA etc. And we think it was one of the first planes destroyed in WW2, when it was lost in the hangar fire in Broken Hill just after war was declared. It was believed to have been sabotaged by Italian or German workers at Broken Hill at the time. It also was part of the early Flying Doctor service in NSW. Item currently held in Archives Australian National Aviation Museum (ANAM) September 2021
