James Garland Colliver lived and worked in Linton between 1863 and 1875, when he moved to Donald. He was actively involved in Linton's business and community life. (See Colliver family file at LDHS.) This photograph may show two adjacent business premises on the east side of Sussex Street, north of Clyde Street: Edwin Ball or Ball Brothers, blacksmiths, and J.G. Colliver, "Machinist". The Ball and Colliver families were related and are understood to have worked collaboratively. A plan of Sussex Street drawn up in 1871 (in LDHS collection -Reg. no. 2013-25) shows an allotment on the east side owned by 'Colliver' next to a slightly larger allotment owned by 'Ball'.Original small, sepia photograph showing premises of "J G Colliver - Machinist" with workmen in front."J G Collivers shop about 100 years ago".j. g. colliver, wheelwright, carpenter, coachbuilder, workers -

Carrie Rogers Murrell, b.1905 at Daylesford, was a daughter of William Murrell and his wife Lily, née Clarke/Young. She was a grand-daughter of Ambrose and Mary Murrell. Carrie Murrell attended Linton State School, completing Grade 8 in 1n 1918. She then assisted her father in the Linton newsagency, before taking over as its manager, a role she enjoyed for some seventy years. In 1932 she moved the business from its site on the west side of Sussex Street to the east side, into a shop next to the Railway Hotel that had previously been run as a shoe shop by Dan Cornish. This shop remained as the Linton Newsagency until Carrie retired. It is now used as a private residence. Photograph dated to between 1903 and 1914. The original wooden buildings of the Railway Hotel were removed in early 1903 and a brick replacement erected that year. James Nelson (who ran the undertaker's business shown next to the hotel) died in 1914 and the business was afterwards run as 'Nelson Bros. Undertakers' by his three sons.This is a cropped version of a photograph (Registration no. 338) which shows both east and west sides of Sussex Street. Information in the "Linton - Sussex Street East Side (Title Searches)" file shows that Mrs Violet Annie Shepherd owned the property next to the garage from 1939, although she had probably been running it since the early 1930s (her mother was the previous owner of the building).Black and white photograph which shows Bennett Bros service station (a brick building), next to Shepherd's "greengrocer and confectionery" store (a weatherboard building), in Sussex Street, Linton. There are two petrol bowsers outside the garage, and a car parked in the street in front of Shepherd's shop. William Murrell ran a newspaper shop on the west side of Sussex Street until 1932, when he moved his business to a site formerly occupied by Dan Cornish (who ran it as a shoe shop). The photograph can be dated to after 1911, as the Surface Hill hotel (between Morgan and Ching stores) appears to have already been demolished (this happened in 1911).Black and white copy of original photograph, which shows east and west sides of Sussex Street, from Morgan's store to Gillespie Street. On the left of the photo (east side of street), there is a glimpse of Patrick O'Sullivan's saddlery shop, then G. G. Bennett's butcher's shop, Nicol's bakery, Wise's drapery, and further along the street the verandah of Preston's store can be seen. On the west side, there is a glimpse of J. H. Morgan's grocery store, Ching's produce store, and Annie Brown's newsagency (Annie Brown nee Annie Nicholls). Two horse-drawn vehicles are in the street. The Linton Library had closed in 1975, and the Nelson Undertakers' building had not yet been renovated to become the Linton & District Historical Society Resource Centre. The licensees of the Railway Hotel at the time were O. & E. Webley.
