This photograph is part of the Caulfield Historical Album 1972. This album was created in approximately 1972 as part of a project by the Caulfield Historical Society to assist in identifying buildings worthy of preservation. The album is related to a Survey the Caulfield Historical Society developed in collaboration with the National Trust of Australia (Victoria) and Caulfield City Council to identify historic buildings within the City of Caulfield that warranted the protection of a National Trust Classification. Principal photographer thought to be Trevor Hart, member of Caulfield Historical Society. Most photographs were taken between 1966-1972 with a small number of photographs being older and from unknown sources. All photographs are black and white except where stated, with 386 photographs over 198 pages. David Miller (Dave) Mair (1879-1938) married Lily Vipond Deakin (1890-1945) in 1910. They had 5 children: Geoffrey David (1913-1970), Beryl (1916-1976), Gwynneth (1917-1997), Isabel Lillian (1921-1997) and Shirley Inez (1928-1968). Personal communication from Laurie Newton, Beryl's daughter: Dave and Lily initially lived in East Melbourne after they married. Dave walked across the gardens to work at the MCG. He never drove or owned a car. Geoffrey, Beryl and Gwynneth were born in East Melbourne. They subsequently moved to Louise Avenue, Mont Albert and Isabel may have been born while they were there. Later they purchased 20 Barton Street, Mont Albert. Electoral roll details: 1919 68 Park Street, Hawthorn 1922 24 Louise Avenue, Mont Albert 1924 20 Barton Street, Mont Albert So, Shirley would have been born while they were at Barton Street. On the basis of these dates, this may have been taken in Hawthorn. Identification of 'Grannie': If this is Lily's mother her name is Janet Deakin (nee Longmore - 1851-1939). If it is Dave's mother her name is Isabel Brown (1855-1944). The other woman is identified as May Little, who helped in the house. Dave Mair was a very keen sportsman. A sepia photo of a well-dressed family in and beside a buggy. The group is comprised of a man, 3 women and 3 children. The chimneys of Victorian or perhaps Edwardian houses are in the background.On rear: "Grannie Dad Mum / Beryl Geoff Isabel" (in hand 1 and blue biro) "on left Isabel on knee" (in a different hand in black biro) "May Little (Helped in / House" (in hand 1 in blue biro). A check of the electoral rolls points to this being the home of Frederick Harry Percival Lamble, labourer, born in Collingwood. He and his family continued to live at 87 Essex Road until his death in 1968 and his occupation is consistently given as labourer. His wife Bessie Louisa Woods died in 1957.Black and white photo taken from the street of an Edwardian style timber house with 2 chimneys, one of which looks like a kitchen or laundry chimney. The house stands behind a white wooden picket fence in a mature garden which conceals the bull-nose verandah. The house appears to have a slate roof with galvanised capping. The house was known as Rothwell and later as Kiora. It was the home of Mr and Mrs Tom Bulmer for many years. It has been demolished.Black and white photo taken from the street of a timber Edwardian home with 2 double brick chimneys and a galvanised iron roof. It has a verandah on 2 sides with wooden fretwork and the pathway leading towards the house has an archway over it. There is a similar archway on the LHS of the photo. The gentleman in the photo is an estate agent. According to a grandson (REF: Email 1/8/2020) the original photos is thought to have been a publicity photo for the real estate agency. Carl Theodore Offszanka (1874-1944) was born in Germany. He is listed in electoral rolls at 44 Guildford Road from 1915, occupation furrier, with his wife Ida (nee Schade, 1882-1963), also born in Germany. They were married in Victoria in 1908. In later electoral rolls at the same address are Erna Helena (b 1913; d 1996) and Maria Eliese (b 1910; m Benedict Francis Rieusset in 1936). Both daughters are listed as typists. Also listed is Bernard George (b 1914; d 1987) who in later electoral rolls is described as a process worker. He served in the AIF in the Second World War. Not listed is Carl Bernard b 1909. The Offszanka family lived at 44 Guildford Road from 1913 until post-1980; they came to Surrey Hills from Richmond. Their home was called 'Westfalia' (ref: 1919 electoral roll), presumably after the region in NW Germany. It is not known when Carl and Ida migrated from Germany. This home has had a 2nd storey added to it in late 1990s. According to a family descendant (REF: Email 1/8/20 from grandson) Carl Theodor Offszanka purchased the home in 1913 for £616. He also purchased the adjoining vacant block of land at 42 Guildford Road and ran a large orchard on it before later selling it. This appears to have been between 1920-1930. The family continued to occupy the house until after 1980 when Erna Helena and Bernard George are listed in the electoral rolls. It has 2 brick chimneys, a corrugated iron roof and timber fretwork to the veranda. There is a single window to the veranda, 2 single windows down the LHS (facing) side of the house and a double window to the RHS (facing) side of the house. This appears to have coloured glass to the top section. The gable is decorated with timber and stucco and has a simple finial. The house has a simple timber picket fence and a driveway down the LHS (facing), in which a carriage is located. A gentleman in a hat stands on the veranda. Built in late 1912 for Mr Edmund Holt and his wife Ruby Ellen (nee Sutton). Edmund came from Coburg where his family had a grocery business. The Holt family lived there from 1913-1945. There were 3 children: Alan Judge (1912-1993); Frederick Sutton (1914-1992) and Raymond James (1918-2000). When Edmund Holt died, Mrs Holt remained there until 1952. Alan Judge Holt was Secretary of the Victorian Lands Department and a keen and meticulous local historian who contributed significantly to this collection. The house has been demolished and there are units on the site. The photo is significant as a record of past built heritage and for its association with the Holt family who were long-time residents of the area.A black and white photograph of an Edwardian style house. The Edwardian style house, built in the early years of the 20th century, is at 181 O'Shanassy Street, Sunbury and for a time it was the residence of former Shire of Bulla, Shire Engineer, John McKerrow. Over the years it has a number of owners and has been well maintained. A non-digital coloured photograph of an Edwardian style weatherboard house with a corrugated iron roof. It was originally a double fronted house but an addition was built on the right side of the house at a later date. The middle section of the house extends with a bay window.
