Thomas Carlyle Lothian (1880-1974) was born on 7 May 1880 at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, eldest child of John Inglis Lothian, bookkeeper, and his wife Lillias Charlotte, née Smith. The family arrived in Melbourne in July 1888, John having come to represent the publishing firm of Walter Scott. His father started his own company in c1890. Thomas joined the business in c1897. In 1911 he established the Standard Publishing Co. Pty Ltd to sell the publications of the Caxton Press direct to the public. In 1912 he married Effie Marian Vines, who had worked for several years in his father's office. His father retired the same year and Thomas formed the company of Thomas C. Lothian Pty Ltd to carry on representing numerous well-known British and American publishers. However, he also published in his own right as the Lothian Book Publishing Co. Pty Ltd. In time he handed over his businesses to his two younger sons. His wife Effie pre-deceased him; he died at ‘St Abs’ on 19 April 1974. People in the photo are identified as: Left: daughter Lilian and centre front daughter Jean Back: Son Noel who studied horticulture and became Director of the Adelaide Botanical Gardens for 30 years; son John who managed the Standard Publishing Co. and sons John and Louis who became directors of the publishing firm. George and Ioulia Raftopoulos are the parents of Sia and Effie. Back L-R: Chrisoula Raftopoulos and Nick Sikiotis. Family would go to Station Pier to either welcome or farewell relatives who departing to or arriving from Greece. Very few of the early Ithacan migrants returned to their homeland. It wasn't until the 1950s and 60s that travel back home to visit family became more common. The couple in the photograph are Ioulia and George Raftopoulos (Klapatsouras) who were the parents of Effie Cominos and Aspasia (Sia) Koutsouvelis. Ioulia was from the village of Stavros and George from Frikes. They arrived in Australia from Ithaca in the 1920s and settled in Park Street Brunswick. These two hats and school tie were once part of the uniform for girls at Warrnambool Technical School. This school was established in 1913 in Timor Street, Warrnambool with the first Principal being John King. From this school evolved the Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education which itself was subsumed into the present day Deakin University campus at Sherwood Park in Warrnambool. The Timor Street site is now the location of South West College of TAFE. The WarrnamboolTechnical School moved from Timor Street to its present-day site in Caramut Road Warrnambool in 1973 and was re-named Brauer College in 1990 after Alfred Brauer, a Warrnambool doctor and a prominent school patron. It is believed that the owners of the hats, Jeannie and Sandra Cole were sisters.These two hats and the tie are interesting reminders of the uniform of a local school some 40 or 50 years ago..1 This is a girl’s boater-shape straw hat.
