The kettle was innovative in many ways; it was an early example of an all plastic electric kettle with a single-handed opening-spout. According to design historian Ian Wong ‘The use of an integral hinge for the spout opening mechanism utilised the unique live hinge property of polypropylene, now common but at the time a novel use and very efficient to manufacture.’ The kettle was available in Carpentaria Orange, Blaze Yellow and Lime Green with a contrasting base. Barry Hudson (1935-2008) studied Mechanical Engineering at the Melbourne Technical College (MTC). In the 1970s he was Research and Development Manager at General Electric, and he also worked with the industrial design practice Rosenfeldt, Gherardin and Associates. He established Barry Hudson Industrial Design in the 1980s and began a teaching career at the former MTC, now known as RMIT University. Ann Carew, 2020 1978 the Kettle won an Australian Design Award and the Prince Philip Prize for Australian Design.Orange and brown electric kettlekettle, industrial design, rmit university, domestic appliances -

(later Simplex Conduits Ltd.) formed in 1898, and the Credenda Company Ltd. which was the first to use Creda as a brand name. These companies were two of the founding companies of Tube Investments Ltd. From 1919, the Simplex name was used for installation equipment ranges, and Creda for heating, cooking and other domestic appliances. In 1932 Simplex Conduits Ltd. and the Credenda Company Ltd. merged to form the Simplex Electric Company Ltd., but the distinct Simplex and Creda brands continued in use. In 1987 the Simplex Electric Company was taken over by General Electric Company, and formed part of General Domestic Appliance Company Ltd. the following year. In 2015 the large corporation, Whirlpool, took over the Indesit Appliance Company, which owns the Creda brand name. Deakin the Australian representative of the Victorian Electric Supply Company on the occasion of the laying of the foundation stone for the new power house building in Hargreaves Street, Bendigo. This power house was built to supply power to both Bendigo and Eaglehawk and the overhead power system for the tramway which ran from Quarry Hill, through the city to Eaglehawk and from Golden Square to Lake Weeroona. The building of the power house changed Eaglehawk and Bendigo as street lights were installed and houses became electrified. A report in the Bendigo Independent in 1902 reported ' Night will then be almost as brilliant as the day and people .... who live in the suburbs are to be provided with a tram service worth of the name'. (See reference A Mammoth Scheme.) The tramways closed in April 1972 after the Victorian Parliament granted the SEC an application to cease operating. Today Bendigo Trust operates the tourist trams which run along Pall Mall and welcomes over 40,000 visitors annually. The Bendigo Tramways Depot is the oldest operating tram depot in Australia and is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register. There are currently 45 trams in the fleet (13 of which operate as part of the 'Talking' Tram service). For more about the history and to tour the tramways visit www.bendigotramways.com.Triangular shaped silver engraved trowel with ivory handle (0286a). WITTON / NO 3462 / 1923"...Electric Avenue, Birmingham, England...This electric torch, likely manufactured in 1923, was used in WWII trenches as a way to signal allies using morse code. ...This electric torch, likely manufactured in 1923, was used in WWII trenches as a way to signal allies using morse code. A small button underneath a thin leather panel on the left face of the lamp would have been used to turn the bulb on and off in quick succession, allowing for messages to be transmitted. The panel of red plastic could be placed over the lense of the lamp, causing it to emit red light as the longer wavelength prevents it from being visible at longer distances as opposed to standard yellow light. The hook on the front face of the lamp allowed a bayonet to be attached by its handle, and the clip on the rear is likely to allow it to be worn on a belt. British manufacturing firm General Electric Company (G.E.C) Mitton was one of several producing similar models of signalling lamp at this time and they were heavily involved in supporting the war effort. This item demonstrates one of the many ways soldiers in Australia were able to communicate without the use of radio transmission and over distances without detection, a key aspect of wartime engineering and electronics development. This signalling lamp is of a rectangular shape with a cylindrical protrusion on its front, similar to that of a camera lense. Within the cylinder is a small light bulb and a panel of glass encloses it. To the right of the cylinder, a circular piece of translucent red plastic rests within a metal casing and is attached to the cylinder with a short piece of string. Below the cylinder is a small hook. On the lamp's rear is a large metal clip, and a small plate with an engraving upon it. The left side of the lamp includes a small, thin panel of leather under which rests a button.Rear, on metal plate: "TORCH ELECTRIC / SIGNAL MK.III / G.E.C. WITTON / NO 3462 / 1923"australia, 1920s, second world war, wwii, world war two -
