1907 photoghraph of Eliza Hand (Grandma Hand), Florence Hand (Aunt Florrie) and little Gert on the verandah of the Beulah Tea Rooms at FiveWays (The Gap). This photograph has a detailed inscription on the back handwritten by John Lundy-Clarke in 1974.1907. Eliza Hand on the verandah of her shop at Kalorama gap with her daughter Florence. Opened as "Beulah Tearooms" it was made a post office in 1909 and Florence Hand became post mistress. It remained active till 1923 when, the building having been sold to Miss McPhee she built the Fiveways store alongside and moved the post office to another room. The verandah was pulled down but the room is still there (1974) facing Ridge Road at the west end of the complex. Eliza died 1918. Eliza Hand married Ellis Jeeves in 1885. They had 12 children, with 8 surviving to adulthood (5 boys and 3 girls). Eliza was one of the daughters of Thomas and Eliza Hand of Mountain Grange Homestead. Eliza and Ellis extended their home in the valley 'Kalorama' to become a Guest House. In 1908 they purchased 'Mountjoy Guest House' from the Paynter family and ran a very successful guest house and coach business. Following the death of Ellis Jeeves in a buggy accident in 1921, Eliza ran the guest house and her son, Hubert, the coaching business. Mrs Eliza Jeeves, wife of Ellis Jeeves, standing in the garden outside the Mountjoy Guest House in Kalorama. Eliza was one of six daughters of Thomas Hand and Eliza Hand, (nee Erith) who owned the Mountain Grange property. Thomas, Eliza and eight children lived at Mountain Grange. Thomas was employed as an engineer for Lillydale Shire, but died suddenly in 1888, aged 42. About 1910, Eliza and her daughter Florence opened the Kalorama Post Office. Eliza died in 1918.eliza hand, thomas hand, mountain grange

Kalorama Memorial Reserve was once the location of 'Mountain Grange', the property of Thomas and Eliza Hand. The pine tree pictured was reputedly planted by Mrs Eliza Hand in the 1880s. Thomas Hand died in 1888 when he was thrown from his horse on Inverness Road. The photograph was taken in 1974 and the pavilion pictured is no longer there. John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the area working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas.Black and white photograph showing a large pine tree behind a pavilion. Photograph of a painting by artist Nora Gurdon of Kalorama depicting Mountain Grange and the Great Barn. The painting was lent to Robert Barrow in 1997 for the Mt Dandenong Primary School Centenary. After his death it was held by the Mt. Dandenong & District Historical Society until it was returned to Elizabeth Law-Smith (grand-daughter of Thomas and Eliza Hand) in 2005. Elizabeth Law-Smith lent the Jeeves photographs for copying. The Historical Society only has a photograph of the painting. Erith Lane would have been named after Eliza Erith, the wife of Thomas Hand of Mountain Grange. The house made of slabs and bark pictured (centre) is where the family lived before Mountain Grange was built. Mabel Hand, Thomas and Eliza's youngest daughter stated that she was born in the bark hut in 1881 and they moved into the new home the same year. Cherry Farm, the roof visible behind the centre building, was the home of William Hand, son of Thomas and Eliza. The Methodist Church was built in 1910 by volunteer labour. Mainly through the efforts of the daughters of Eliza Hand and their families - the Jeeves, Walkers and Badenhops. Lot 2 was bought by Harry Walker in the early 1900s. Harry was married to Eva Hand, one of the six daughters of Thomas and Eliza Hand. Harry cleared the land and planted half with raspberries that remained productive until c1928. Harry's son William took over the property. The land was cut in half when the new CRB road went through in the early 1920s. John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the area working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas.Black and white photograph showing a single storey white house in the centre surrounded by crops. The building with the white picket fence is the Beulah Tea Gardens opened by Eliza Hand c1904 at The Gap (now FiveWays). The building is still operating as a cafe. The Tourist Road does not yet exist. Old Coach Road comes into the picture from the right and the horse and cart is heading up Ridge Road. The elm trees can be seen on the left. The building up on the hill is the Mountjoy Guest House. ‘Mountjoy’ was built by the Paynter family in 1905. It had fourteen bedrooms, a dining room and sitting room, kitchen with a big wood burning range and verandahs on three sides. There were commanding views of the eastern ranges and the city to the west. Ellis Jeeves purchased ‘Mountjoy’ in 1908 and it soon became a popular tourist destination, the coach yards making it a centre of the district. ‘Mountjoy’ is a central feature of many photographs of Kalorama in the 1900s. One of these is really two as two suckers of the further tree were twisted together by Fred Jeeves in 1898 and grew as one tree. The other was planted in 1880. The shop is the shop of Mrs Eliza Hand and daughter Florence. The closed in far end of the verandah was the Mount Dandenong North Post Office. The large house is “Mountjoy” owned and run by the Jeeves Family from 1908 till 1943. It was built in 1905 by the Paynters who sold to Ellis Jeeves in 1908.He moved his line of coaches from “Kalorama” his old homestead and housed the horses in a line of stables behind “Mountjoy”. Price’s house, which contained their shop, the first one on the mountain, opened 1906, can be seen faintly behind the pine tree opposite the bend in the road, which was the main road then and now is Ridge Road. The Price’s house just shows in two tiny pieces, one on each side of the pine tree half way up. The house to the right of and high up the pine tree is Walker’s cottage which exists today opposite Jack Kidd’s home at the far edge of Lt 2 Village Settlement and was between Main Road and Barbers Road which runs down the left behind the elms. Walker’s homestead can be seen near left edge of picture 2/3 way up. The roof of the Methodist Church shows among trees left of picture.
