A related souvenir from the Second Word War is the colourful 'Souvenir of Palestine'. Like the First World War Egyptian embroideries, they used cotton sateen in a range of bright colours (although sometimes velveteen was used instead) and bear the words 'Souvenir of Palestine', a year date, and sometimes a personal message, as well as images of specific mosques or landmarks, camels, goats and date palms. The Palestinian souvenirs were often seen displayed for sale outside houses in country villages These types of souvenirs were very popular with Australian troops; they were easy to send home and were colourful. The vendors would have a number of designs for sale already machine embroidered, from which the soldier could select and then personalise with a date or message. This embroidered tray cloth is a souvenir of Warrnambool and may have been made to remember a holiday or as a gift. Embroidered silk postcards sent by soldiers in WW1 to their families back home, were an early example of embroidered souvenirs. In peacetime, tourists would buy embroidered teatowels, badges, scarves or hankies etc as souvenirs of their trip or to give to friends or family. These items often featured local land marks, flora or fauna, maps or emblems of a particular region. This example appears to be handmade using a plain tray cloth with a punctured border ready for the maker to add her own embroidered design and crocheted edge - rather than using a mass produced prestamped design. This item is a significant example of an Australian handmade embroidered souvenir designed and made as a remembrance of Warrnambool. It is also a significant example of Australian Women's domestic handcraft.Rectangular cotton tray cloth with the words "Greetings from Warrnambool" embroidered in lazy daisy stitch using an orange variegated cotton. The embroideries were machine chained onto colourful cotton sateen (often mistakenly thought to be silk) and usually bear the words 'Souvenir of Egypt' and a year date. Most have a distinctly Egyptian flavour and show the pyramids, camels or date palms. Others show images associated with different armies (such as the Australian Rising Sun Badge, New Zealand General Service Badge or British unit badges) or nations (such as the Australian coat of arms). However, during WW2 they were usually embroidered on black velveteen and the variety of images was not as great as had been available during the First World War. These types of souvenirs were very popular with Australian troops; they were easy to send home and were colourful. The vendors would have a number of designs for sale already machine embroidered, from which the soldier could select and then personalise with a date or message.Black and gold timber frame containing rectangular black cloth edged in light blue fringe. Made by aunt of donor. Mountmellick embroidery is a traditional, heavy white-on-white (whitework) hand embroidery style that originated around 1825 in the town of Mountmellick in County Laois, Ireland. Developed by Johanna Carter, the craft is celebrated for its deeply textured, sculptural appearance and all-Irish origins. Strictly monochrome white-on-white (white thread on white fabric). Traditionally worked on heavy, firm cotton satin jean, providing a sturdy, durable base for household items like bedspreads, tablecloths, and doilies. Uses thick, matte, twistless or heavy cotton threads that do not divide, contrasting with the sheen of the cotton jean fabric. Inspired by the local Irish flora, including blackberries, brambles, oak leaves, dog roses, ivy, ferns, and shamrocks, as well as later cultivated garden plants. Features heavily padded and knotted stitches, such as satin stitch, French knots, stem stitch, buttonhole stitch, and the signature Mountmellick stitch (which creates a triangle-like, spiked outline effect)White linen with white embroidery around the turn of the century in the Mountmellick style. This photograph is of a rectangular white damask tablecloth, which was owned by Mrs Murrell (Lily Murrell, née Young, wife of William Murrell). The Murrell family ran the Linton newsagency during the 1930s and 1940s. Mrs Murrell asked people who came into the newsagency to sign and date the cloth, and later she embroidered the names and dates in various coloured thread. Traditionally such ‘signature cloths’ were used as a fundraiser for charity purposes and date back to the 1890s at least. They were at their height of popularity during World War I and the inter-war period, often embroidered in red or blue. The Linton tablecloth has a number of signatures and dates, some not embroidered, the dates ranging from 1931 to 1945. It is a delightful example of the genre and a wonderful visual record of people who lived in or visited Linton over a period of 15 years.Colour photograph of a cream cotton tablecloth that has signatures embroidered on it.
