This Fire Fighting Backpack dates from around c.1960s.This Fire Fighting Backpack Extinguisher was used for mopping-up and combating small fires by members of a crucial volunteer fire fighting service operating in the Emerald district since 1941.This galvanised metal Rega Fire Fighting Backpack Sprayer was used by Emerald CFA (formerly RFB) from 1960's. The main body of the spray tank is orange and has woven canvas shoulder straps with buckles for carrying on your back. On top of the oval tank is a lid with a chain which has "REGA SPRAYER" embossed onto it. It has a metal handle over the top of the lid, which is hinged and has two clips for docking the wooden handle of the sprayer hose when not in use. The wooden sprayer handle with a brass pump assembly is attached to the tank with a piece of hosing allowing for pressurized spraying. The subject of this portrait, Gus Ryberg (1911 - 2000), was a tireless promoter of local history and was pivotal in the establishment of the Nobelius Heritage Park and of the Emerald Museum. He was a prominent member of other community organisations including the Emerald Fire Brigade, the Emerald Arts Society and the Macclesfield Cemetery Trust. He received an Order of Australia medal for services to the local community in 1996. The artist, John Dudley, who donated this portrait to the Museum, was the President of the Emerald Arts Society. Jean and Bert Bergwerf bought this cream separator from Gerald Maggs hardware store in Dandenong in 1962, it having previously belonged to a farm in Gippsland. They used it to sell milk to their neighbours and supply milk and cream to the Emerald Fire Brigade. It was manufactured in Dursley, England by R.A. Lister & Co. Ltd. While we know it was bought from the farm in 1962, it is unclear how long it was in use before then. R.A. Lister & Co's Melbourne agency opened in 1893, but this likely isn't quite that old. A similar model held by the Jindera Pioneer Museum and Historical Society Inc. has been dated to c. 1937, and it would be viable for this to be of a similar origin.This item is an example of the tools vital in providing milk and cream to communities through the 20th century.This is a hand-operated bench-mounted ball bearing cream separator consisting of a red-painted stand with a crank, a large drum for spinning, with an output pipe and a small output catchment drum.Embossed Label: "MADE BY / R.A.
