This book was borrowed from the Emerald Mechanic's Institute in 1961 but never returned. The first Emerald Mechanic's Institute (also known as the Emerald Hall) was built in 1905 but was burnt down in 1955. A new Emerald Hall was opened on the site on 16 November 1957 and remained in operation until its demolition in 2018 to make way for the building of the Emerald Hub.This book recalls the history of the library service at the Emerald Mechanic's Institute. This is a photograph of the stage of the Emerald Mechanics Hall decorated for the occasion of welcoming back and celebrating the local men who had fought in World War I. 100 men from Emerald and the local district enlisted to fight. 34 did not return having died from battlefield wounds or disease.This photograph speaks to the importance to the Emerald community of honouring its returned World War I soldiers.Black and white photographic print of a stage decorated with flags, flowers and a banner welcoming soldiers back home.The picture has a banner with the words: 'WELCOME HOME / TO OUR BOYS / DUTY / NOBLY DONE' On the back of the print two handwritten inscriptions, the first in biro: 'After 1st World War'. The Emerald Garden Club operated from 1960 to 2025 with monthly meetings throughout the year and annual garden shows in August. The last garden show was in 2008 although monthly meetings with competitions, biannual plant sales, and working bees continued. The Club was forced to close in 2025 due to an ageing membership. This is a collection of photographs taken at their Winter Show, held at the Emerald Hall on 29 Aug-31 Aug 2008. This photograph was taken from nearby what is now the intersection of Emerald-Monbulk Road and Main Street, sometime around the 1920s. It is said to capture a broad array of important institutions including Moffats general store, Madigan's butcher (originally Couper's), the Emerald Recreation Reserve, the corner store and bakery, the Emerald Mechanics Institute, and part of the Nobelius nursery.This photograph is a particularly broad capture of Emerald's landscape and townscape around the 1920s, with extensive detail in its annotation and featuring several important insitutions of early Emerald.A black and white photograph of a rural street, with shrubland in the foreground and a building in the middle of the shot beside the street continuing towards the background.
