Silver Springs Lodge was owned and managed by prominent Emerald residents, William and Olive Hamilton, during the 1940s and 1950s. The guest dwelling occupied stunning real estate along Emerald Lakeside. Guests were offered a variety of entertainment and access to activities including pianola, radio, swimming, tennis, riding, golf, car trips and home cooking. Weekly tariffs ranged from ₤4-10 and ₤4-15. It is believed the postcard was produced by the Valentine Publishing Co., inferred by the company's unique identifier — the letter 'V' followed by numbers — which appear on the obverse, as well as the word "Valentine's" which is printed on the reverse. This inscription is akin to examples of Valentine Publishing Co. postcards in other collections, such as the Kew Historical Society Inc. and Phillip Island and District Historical Society Inc.The record holds very strong historic significance as it speaks to the transformation of the Dandenong foothills into a popular tourist destination in Victoria. Particularly, the Silver Springs Lodge was an early tourist enterprise in region which had previously been dominated by industries of timber, gold and horticulture. The record is particularly significant for how it documents this important metamorphosis of Emerald into a key location for tourism. Furthermore, the postcard offers some research potential into the commercialisation of housing and its wider socioeconomic impacts on the local community, particularly in our current climate of short-term holiday rentals like AirBnB and Stayz.Black and white rectangular postcard printed on card. Dr Bottomley was born in Fitzroy in 1881 and obtained a Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Melbourne in 1906. He lived in South Yarra with a weekend log cabin called Forest Lodge in Emerald and practiced in Collins Street in Melbourne. In the 1920s Dr Bottomley and business partner W.H. Treganowan initiated the Emerald Country Club syndicate to purchase land from Carl Axel Nobelius' Gembrook Nurseries estate, which led to the formation of the golf course and Country Club facilities. Bottomley Drive in Emerald is named after Dr Bottomley; the street is located near Silver Birches, the house commissioned by the doctor from modernist architect Harry Norris. 'Action traction' obstetrical forceps were invented by Dr Robert Milne-Murray, a practicing physician at the Royal Maternity and the Simpson Memorial Pavilion in Edinburgh in 1891. They were designed to allow the attending physician to obtain a secure hold on the infant before pulling backwards on the handle to facilitate the baby's birth. Forceps to extract fetuses from women who would otherwise die during complications in labour have been used as a last resort since 1500 BCE, though it has only been in the last 300-500 years that forceps design has shifted to focusing on saving the lives of both mother and infant. These are fenestrated forceps, with a hollow 'blade' or loop, which have been superseded as a design by solid models that are less likely to cause compression damage to the baby's head.These items are significant as they provide insights into medical practice in the early Twentieth-Century in Melbourne and surrounds. They are also significant because they were used by Dr William Bottomley, who owned property in Emerald and whose business dealings significantly shaped the development of the town.The silver-coloured item is approximately fifteen centimetres long; it has a solid metal handle bar and a stem leading to a flat panel with two holes that are designed to connect it to the body of the forceps. The Rose Stereograph Co. was established in the year 1880. The firm's founder, George Rose Clune, began developing photographs from his father's shoe shop located in Prahran, Victoria. George would travel to the Dandenong foothills to sell his photographs to picnic parties, thus creating a connection to Emerald and surrounding districts. The Rose Stereograph Co. first began producing stereographs. After this medium lost popularity, George switched to postcards — referred to as the 'P' series, such as this example — in 1913. The firm continued to print postcards until 1967, after which they switched to machine-manufactured coloured postcards provided by an external supplier. A planning application for a 4-storey commercial and medical complex in the Main Street was opposed by a group of residents. They lodged an objection to VCAT which was ultimately successful. Subsequently a new Emerald Police Station was built on the site. Local farmers and business-owners who settled in Emerald after the initial gold rush period first petitioned for a school in the local area in 1876, with at least two petitions to the Education department lodged by 1877. Emerald School no. 2110 opened as a temporary 'half time' school (meaning that the single teacher split their time between two schools) in temporary facilities in January 1879 while a permanent location was selected. Lobbying by townspeople in 1899 identified the present location of Emerald School no. 3381, within the original township boundary near the football field. The original building constructed to house the school was described variously as 'the tin shed' and 'a hut with a chimney.' It opened in February 1901. The buildings depicted in the photograph show a selection of school buildings and portable classrooms just before major construction works began in late 1977. Five existing portable classrooms were halved in size and moved to a different location before work on a brick wing containing classrooms, an arts and craft room and staff facilities began in early 1978. A 1915 classroom, which may be the building on the left of the image, was modified into administrative offices at the same time. At the time of writing (2023) Emerald Primary School is the largest primary school in the area, with nearly 500 students.The item is significant as it presents a view of Emerald Primary School (Township School no. 3381) in the late 1970s before extensive building works changed the appearance of the school. The tree depicted in the image, a mature Sequoia, or Californian Redwood, was destroyed to build an additional brick wing during these works.
