Chemist and later parliamentarian Joseph Bosisto (1824-98) established a number of distilleries in the area through the 1860s and 70s; the Butterfield Reserve still is believed to have been established in 1876. This photo may have been taken around 1916, when Australia was still the world's leading supplier of eucalyptus oil - by this time a globally popular product. By the 1920s, Joby Brady and his son were running the distillery business.Bosisto's eucalyptus distillery was an early Emerald industry with global significance; eucalyptus oil was believed to be the first distinctively Australian product exported overseas. This photograph is a very clear representation of the industry - to the extent that it is even used repeatedly in Euca's webpages discussing the history of the industry.Captured in black and white, a working eucalyptus distillery processes large quantities of eucalyptus leaves into eucalyptus oil. Two men stand holding tools, one under the tin roof of the distillery and another on a horsecart carrying a new pile of leaves. Another stands behind the distillery, carrying more leaves. The largest pile of leaves is in front of the still. The still is sheltered by a tin roofed structure with open walls, wooden support beams, and a chimney in the background. Further in the background, trees can be barely seen. This photograph is a scanned copy, glossy on the obverse and with normal paper texture and handwritten notes on the reverse.Reverse: "Distilling Eucalyptus / Bosistoes. The club has changed its official colours three times, playing firstly under blue and white colours, then green and gold before adopting the red and black colours shown in the photograph and still used today. The club has also been known variously as the 'Emites', the 'Redlegs' and the current 'Bombers.' A joint Australian Football League (AFL) and La Trobe University Centre for Sport and Social Impact study discusses the importance of local football teams for fostering community cohesion and relationships and distributing information and health and social issues to local people. Local football and other sporting teams are integral to the economic and social development of an area and are therefore significant far beyond the immediate players or families associated with the club. The photograph is significant for its insights into the history of sports and recreation in the Emerald region in the 1990s. It depicts and names individual players for the Emerald Football Club (the 'Bombers') during this time period. Australian Rules Football has a long history in the region and played a fundamental role in community life.Colour rectangular photograph printed on photographic paper with two adhesive paper labels. The photograph depicts twenty-four men standing or sitting in two rows facing the camera. Most of the men appear to be aged in their early twenties, but there is one older man standing at the far right of the group. This makes it more likely that this photograph is from Emerald or Menzies Creek, with the annotation on the reverse suggesting it was near Butterfield Reserve and therefore in Emerald. It is part of Melbourne's V.S.M. (Victoria Stamp Market) Series, printed in Prussia, Germany alongside several similar hand-coloured postcards in our collection. This postcard is believed to originate from c. 1905, but the image itself - depicting a gold washing bath on Menzies Creek - might be older. Gold mining in Emerald was most popular in the 1850s and 60s. However, gold mining on Menzies Creek reopened in the 1890s depression, which is a more likely source of this photograph. This postcard is significant for its relative uniqueness as a colourised depiction of Emerald's gold mining history. This item is a hand-coloured photographic postcard. In mapping the terrain of the Dandenong foothills, this surveyor book played a big role in laying the foundations for the roads and suburbs in the area. The record's interpretive capacity is strengthened by its position with a museum dedicated to collecting, documenting and preserving the history of Emerald and surrounding districts. There is strong research potential once knowledge of the techniques used by the surveyor are unlocked, revealing a better understanding of the data. This field book contains comprehensive, handwritten survey data, including measurements and annotations, regarding the shapes, angles and curves of roads in Emerald and surrounding districts. The first entry refers to High St, Bayswater, not dated, although the second entry for Emerald-Monbulk Rd is dated 6 June 1934. Data captured includes back, intermediate, form, rise, fall, reduced levels, distance, as well as general remarks and comments. In addition to this quantitative data, there are also hand drawn diagrams of angles and roads scattered throughout the book.
