This badge was issued to supporters of the 1980s campaign called ‘Citizens Against Ferguson Street Extension’. Ferguson Street is in East Warrnambool and at the time the road was formed but there were no houses on the north side. The proposal was to extend the street at the north east end so that access could be made to east Warrnambool and Deakin University. The local residents opposed the proposal because it would increase traffic in the quiet suburban areas. The scheme did not go ahead. This badge is of minor interest as an example of a local campaign against an unpopular City Council proposal. This is a green circular-shaped badge made of plastic. It has black printing with a sketch of three Norfolk Island pine trees on the front and a metal clip at the back for attachment to a person’s clothing. In this undated drawing, believed to have been done in 1925, an existing bluestone store was extended out into the courtyard area. The extensions were on the south and west elevations, and the drawing includes a floor plan of these areas. The chimney extension on what was the former Carlton and United Breweries boiler house at Ballarat installed in 1972 and it is constructed of a special formulation of fibreglass reinforced plastics designed to operate at elevated temperature (ie boiler flue gas). It is thought to be one of 26 or 28 fibreglass boiler chimneys designed and installed in Victoria in the 1970s, and is thought to be one of the last to be removed. In its day the fibreglass chimney extension was at the cutting edge of fibreglass technology and is therefore well worth retaining. Removal of the chimney extension to the brick chimney outside the brewery building was deemed necessary to prolong the life of the chimney, and also because the fibreglass extension had reached end of life and posing a possible threat. According an Engineering assessment, fibreglass structures have a life expectancy of between 20 years (when fatigue loaded) and up to 100 years (static loaded). We don’t know when it was added to the chimney but believe it was most likely in the early 1970s. Given that it is subject to wind load and often observed to be moving in the wind it is likely that it will be at the end of its life. The chimney will be made good and we have the necessary planning approvals in place to undertake the works. The chimney extension was removed on 13 November 2015 in accordance with a planning permit obtained by the University. The extension is believed to have been added in the 1970s and was predominantly made from fibre glass. The structure was removed for safety reasons and to preserve the integrity of the historic brick chimney which supported it. The circular, S.2628/11, opening the extension of the railway line from Beech Forest to Crowes in June, 1911, is amended by S.2779/11 of 1911. The DOWN train runs from Colac to Beech Forest on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, departing at 3.00pm and arriving at 6.45pm. Orbost and East Gippsland Railway League had proposed a railway extension through East Gippsland in 1908, which aimed to develop an isolated part of the country. At the time, construction of a railway could be considered a beneficial investment for the country as it could increase the population in the region. The proposed railway length in 1908 was about 140 miles and the cost was estimated £800,000. The line was proposed to proceed from Bairnsdale by way of the Lower Nicholson to Bruthen. “After crossing the Tambo River, it would be carried to near Nowa Nowa; the head of Lake Tyers, forward to Orbost. From Orbost it would proceed in a north-easterly way to the New South Wales border. There were different suggested routes between Orbost and the New South Wales border, the first was through Bendoc, another by the Cann River and another which is located between these two. This item is associated with the history of the Orbost-Bairnsdale railway line and therefore reflects the role that the rail line played in the social and economic history of Orbost. The Bairnsdale-Orbost railway was opened in 1916 to serve the agricultural and timber industry. Because of the decline in traffic and heavy operating costs, the line was finally closed in August, 1987. Bob (Herman) Hymans (a former member of the Royal Netherlands Navy) was born in Bloemendaal, Holland on 30th September 1922. During World War II he fought against the Japanese in the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia) and was imprisoned in Changi and on the Burma Railway. After gaining qualifications as a Ski Instructor, Bob arrived in Falls Creek in July 1950. Working as an Instructor and Supervisor at Bogong Lodge, Bob decided his future was in accommodation. He was successful in negotiating an indenture for land from the State Electricity Commission (SEC). It took Bob two years to build his Grand Coeur Chalet but, tragically, it was burned down in August 1961. Bob also built the first Chairlift in Australia. This was a single chairlift and the structure was built from wooden electricity poles. He was constantly full of new ideas and proposals for the village. Bob Hymans died on 7th July 2007. This Collection of documents and letters tells the story of Bob's endeavours to develop Falls Creek into the ski village it is today.This item is significant because it documents proposals put forward by Bob Hymans to develop facilities in the Falls Creek Tourist Area.A brief note to the Management Committee accompanying plans to extend the chalet.
