Auctions of Crown land were introduced in the Colony of Victoria from 1851 to encourage settlers to occupy and work the land. Many squatters purchased land at auction at the upset (minimum) price of £1 per acre. In some areas where demand was high, such as the goldfields, the price realised at auction was much more. Land was put up for sale in the study area on the Burrumbeep run in May 1855, on the Lexington run in 1857, and on the Gorrinn run in 1858. Alex Reid was born in 1891 and began work on the Victorian Railways in 1907. He enlisted with the A.I.F in 1915. He served in Egypt and the Suez Canal but was discharged on medical grounds having contracted typhoid and dysentery. In 1917 he re-enlisted in the Anzac Light Horse. On his return to England, he survived the torpedoing of HMAT Ballarat and then served in France. On discharge from the army, Alex returned to the Victorian Railways and transferred to Wodonga. He was employed driving the “Spirit of Progress” and remained as “Driver in Charge” until his retirement in 1956. Alex was awarded the MBE in 1951 and the OBE in 1963 for his tireless efforts on behalf of Returned Servicemen and their families. He continued to work as a welfare officer for the RSL. As well as continued service to the RSL, Alex served as a member of the Wodonga High School advisory committee for 35 years and sat on the bench in the Wodonga Court for 15 years in his capacity as Justice of the Peace. A light grey cloth covered book titled Velveteens. A Norfolk Story by Edward Gilliat, M.A., Assistant Master in Harrow School. Illustrated by F. Barnard. The title is printed in yellow decorative lettering at the top of the front cover with a brown illustration of a man hunting with a rifle and dogs. The author's name is at the bottom in brown lettering. Inside is a Bookplate. Opposite the title page is a frontispiece black and white illustration for P.33, titled "Dead? Who's dead?" asked the squire. Publishing details are noted on the title page which has a faded tissue paper page. There is a Contents page, listing XXX chapters. Each chapter has at the top of the page a decorative nature illustration inside a rectangular box. P.125 has another black and white full page illustration. 250 Pp.
