Father Paul Van Chi Chu is a prolific composer of Vietnamese liturgical music and author. Ordained in Saigon, Vietnam, in 1975, he was imprisoned for several years by Communist authorities opposed to his religious activities. He escaped in 1988 and resettled in Australia. Currently, he serves the Vietnamese Catholic community in Sydney. The Bacchus Marsh Express was a weekly newspaper first published in July 1866. It was produced in the Victorian town of Bacchus Marsh and was distributed in that township and the surrounding district. The original title was "The Bacchus Marsh Express : and General Advertiser for Ballan, Melton, Myrniong, Blackwood, Gisborne, Egerton and Gordon Districts". There were numerous variations to the name of this newspaper over the next 100 years but it usually retained the word 'Express' as part of its title. In September 2010 the word Express disappeared from the title and it became known as the Moorabool Weekly which then merged with some other newspapers over the next few years. For over 100 years the Crisp family owned or were associated with the production of the Express. By 22 February 1984 Syme Community Newspapers had taken over the Express. This entity was later renamed Fairfax Community Newspapers and continued to publish the Express until the disappearance of the name 'Express' altogether at the begining of September 2010. The last issue with the word 'Express' in the title being published on 31 August 2010.This is the first local Bacchus Marsh newspaper that continued to be published over a significant period of time. After beginning July 1866 it continued to be published weekly until the last issue on the 31 August 2010 was published. Nearly all published editions of the Express have been preserved. Issues No.1 and No.2, 7 and 14 July are not extant. The earliest known issue in existence is No.3, 21 July, 1866. William Fairfax was a member of the Fairfax family that was, and still is, associated with the publication of many Australian newspapers. Henry Laurie later became well-known as a Melbourne University Philosophy Professor.These original newspapers are most important because they contain much information on Warrnambool’s early history and are a primary source of information for historians. These papers are also of importance because some parts of the original papers were not filmed and are not currently available on microfilm. These papers were in a Warrnambool City Council storage area and it is surmised that they have come from the old Warrnambool Museum that no longer exists. These are two sets bound together of original Warrnambool Examiner newspapers from 3rd January 1871 to 31st March 1871 and from 4th April 1871 to 27th June 1871. The individual copies are broadsheets of two pages printed on the four sides. The original cover of Set One has been replaced with plain grey cardboard and Set Two has a plain cardboard cover. The advertisements and public notices have been heavily marked by an editor with blue and red pencil. The Warrnambool Examiner was founded in 1851 by John Wilkson and Richard Osburne. After a gap of a couple of years Richard Osburne resumed publication in October 1853 and continued until 1867. William Fairfax and Henry Laurie then leased the paper (1867 to 1872) before Richard Osburne again became the proprietor from October 1872 to April 1878 and from December 1879 to December 1880 when publication ceased. Richard Osburne was a pioneer settler in Warrnambool, arriving in 1847. He was prominent in community activities in the town and was a most important early historian, publishing his seminal work, ‘The History of Warrnambool’ in 1887, using the Warrnambool Examiner newspapers to assist with this history. Fairfax and Laurie were the proprietors when the papers described herein were printed. This Almanac was published by the Warrnambool Advertiser in 1873. The Warrnambool Advertiser was first published in 1868 by the Warrnambool Newspaper Company with James Hider as chairman. The first editor and publisher was Frank Davis who was succeeded in these positions in January 1870 by Daniel Harrison and Daniel George. The plant and goodwill was sold in May1874 to Fairfax and Laurie, the proprietors of the Warrnambool Standard. The owner of this booklet was Christopher Beattie who came to Warrnambool in 1853 and founded, with Henry Phillips, the undertaking firm of Beattie & Phillips in 1865. Beattie was heavily involved in community affairs in Warrnambool - the Fire Brigade, the Building Society, the Mechanics' Institute, the Manchester Unity Lodge and the Wesleyan Church. Several pages of the booklet have personal notes written by Beattie. The booklet remained in the possession of J J Leahy, the successor to Beattie & Phillips in the Fairy Street undertaking business.This booklet is of major importance as it is an original Warrnambool Advertiser Almanac of 1873. This Almanac was published two years before the Warrnambool Standard Almanacs were issued (1875-1930) and thus it contains information not available elsewhere. The association with Christopher Beattie of the firm Beattie & Phillips and the Beattie handwritten material are also of major interest to local historians.This is a booklet of 47 pages, the Warrnambool Advertiser Almanac of 1873. Some of the first and end pages are missing and some of the inside pages are torn or partly missing. Some of the end pages are loose. The booklet contains a monthly calendar with historical dates from Australia and overseas, Town and District Directories of people living in the Warrnambool area, general information on organisations and businesses in Warrnambool and the surrounding district and postal information. It also has many local Warrnambool and district advertisements, some with black and white sketches. There are also several pages with comments handwritten by Christopher Beattie.
