Early settlers in Moorabbin Shire used large cast iron pots, pans and kettles, that were suspended over the open fire in the kitchen, for cooking meals. Anecdotal evidence holds that most men returned from Vietnam in the dead of night, hidden from the public. In fact, large numbers actually returned on HMAS Sydney, to a welcome by dignitaries and a parade. The manner of their homecoming affected the way in which veterans recovered from the war, those who did arrive late at night to no fanfare and the seeming indifference of the military had more trouble adjusting to life at home than did those whose return was more public and who had had the benefit of a couple of weeks unwinding on board Sydney before reaching Australia. But the return home was only the beginning of a long period of readjustment. For a long time after the war large numbers of Vietnam veterans felt that many in Australia blamed them, rather than politicians, for the war and the way it had been conducted. Images of the war, many still familiar, of children burned by napalm, of the dead of My Lai, of a South Vietnamese general summarily executing a member of the Viet Cong in the streets of Saigon, had an effect on public opinion and public understanding. The fact that these images related more to the American/Vietnamese experience in Vietnam was less remarked upon. People associated the role of Australians in the war with that of the Americans in a way that failed to recognise the two countries’ different approaches to fighting in Vietnam. see https://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=3&cad=rja&ved=0CDwQtwIwAg&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DYL06ddRmiJE&ei=O9OJUYnxC5GaiQeey4HQCA&usg=AFQjCNEjq876qAoYu0WnWslDSNRUJlmuBw&bvm=bv.46226182,d.aGc Wooden Plaque 15cm x 13cmVietnam Vererans Parade Sydney 1987

Maidstone began as an 1858 speculative township on Ballarat Road, grew slowly due to isolation from rail transport, then expanded rapidly in the 20th century through tram extensions, defence industries, migrant hostels, and Housing Commission estates.Today it is a diverse, residential‑industrial suburb shaped by waves of working‑class settlement, post‑war migration, and late‑20th‑century redevelopment. Early Foundations (1840s–1860s- The broader district saw activity from the 1840s, including Joseph Raleigh’s meat‑preserving works on the Maribyrnong River, which sat on the boundary of what became Maidstone. - Land speculator J.W. Thompson launched the township with great fanfare, including a German band and a banner proclaiming “Every man his own landlord.” - Despite the marketing, by 1860 only about ten homes existed. - - Maidstone grew slowly because it was isolated from the railway, relying instead on punts across the Maribyrnong River. - A National School opened in 1858, but the area remained sparsely settled. - The district’s early industrial landscape included: - Raleigh’s meat works (1843) - Victorian Powder Magazine, later expanded for military use These sites later became part of Pipemakers Park and the Living Museum of the West. - The arrival of trams from Footscray in 1921 finally unlocked residential growth. - A Progress Association formed, and the suburb gained amenities including its own cinema in the 1940s. - Housing stock from this era included weatherboard, Art Deco, and Californian Bungalow homes. The Guzman y Gomez Mexican fast-food chain opened their Eltham store at 963 Main Road on December 3, 2025 with fanfare and special promotions that attracted large crowds lining up to get a taste all day long. The appearance of the store in terms of the chain’s usual signage had to be toned down to some degree to comply with Eltham’s local planning requirements. Some excerpts from the Guzman y Gomez website post about the event: Eltham… You Absolutely Smashed It! Massive crowds, big energy and an unforgettable opening day. (2025, December 8). Retrieved from https://www.guzmanygomez.com.au/eltham-you-absolutely-smashed-it/ "Eltham, what a day! Opening day for our new GYG Eltham restaurant was nothing short of incredible, and we want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who came down to celebrate. From $5 Burritos and Bowls to free coffee and lots of exclusive GYG merch, the good vibes rolled non-stop from early morning through to dinner!" "The energy kicked off bright and early with the Mayor of Eltham [sic], John Dumaresq, arriving at 7am to officially cut the yellow ribbon and help launch the opening of GYG Eltham. It was an exciting way to open the doors and of course, the mayor enjoyed a delicious and clean GYG brekkie burrito!" "Behind GYG Eltham is Andre and Konrad Reich, a local father and son team who have a passion for great food, great people and making a real difference in the community. Opening a GYG has been a long-time dream for the pair, and they’ve been waiting years for this to happen!" "Thanks to the restaurant’s prime location right next to the train station, guests were hopping off public transport and walking straight into GYG for lunch and dinner. The after-school rush was huge, with local students and young people flooding in to take advantage of the $5 Burritos and Bowls." "In true GYG spirit, the opening of Eltham has created 50 new local jobs, with the team already growing fast. Andre and Konrad are passionate about building a fun, supportive crew who live and breathe GYG’s ‘Got Your Back’ value." "“As part of our opening, we’ve welcomed a number of local crew — for some, this will be their very first job. We’re proud to show them what GYG is all about while delivering incredible food and an outstanding guest experience. We’re still hiring and can’t wait to get involved with the community, fuelling local sports clubs with delicious GYG meals and epic merch,” added Konrad Reich."joan castledine collection, 963 main road, eltham shops, guzman y gomez - eltham, main road eltham, opening day, restaurants, john dumaresq, konrad reich, andre reich, youth employment, nillumbik shire mayor

The bridge over the Yarra River was initially opened September 22nd, 1961. Newspaper reports at the time of opening stated it linked Bolton Street, Eltham, with Fitzsimons Lane, Templestowe. In 1955 the Country Roads Board (CRB) produced survey plans that showed proposed land acquisition for the future bridge and road approaches. The 1955 plan shows that it was proposed to connect Fitzsimons Lane with Bolton Street in Eltham by a diagonal road across the river. The road connection would then continue along Bolton Street to Main Road. Prior to construction of the bridge the CRB modified the proposal significantly so that there was a new road parallel with Bolton Street and then curving to join Main Road at what was then its intersection with Old Eltham Road. This involved significantly more land acquisition and altered the pattern of land subdivision through this corridor. Initially the new road was just a single two-way carriageway as it would have required a significant widening of the cutting on the Shire of Eltham side of the river. The road was officially un-named but was known locally as the Eltham-Templestowe Road. The 1966 Melway street directory and other 1960s editions also listed the road as the Eltham-Templestowe Road. In December 1970, Eltham Shire Council, in pursuance of the provisions of the Local Government Act, named it Templestowe Road. The road was renamed Fitzsimons Lane around 1984 in conformity with the section south of the river. In 1991 a new bridge was built to the west of the original bridge. Fitzsimons Lane was widened to four traffic lanes although on the Eltham side this was done within the limits of the existing cutting. NEW BRIDGE STARTS THEM EXPLORING Without any fanfares, Country Roads Board workmen on Friday afternoon put the finishing touches to the approaches, removed the barricades, and let the traffic roll over the new Yarra bridge linking Bolton Street, Eltham, with Fitzsimons Lane, Templestowe. Over the week-end many “bridge watchers” who were making one of their periodic inspections of the progress on the new bridge found to their surprise that they could drive over it, so that people who had gone for a run out to Eltham suddenly found themselves wandering through Templestowe and Doncaster. By Monday the word of the bridge’s opening had got around sufficiently for many regular travellers to the city from Eltham and beyond to vary the monotony by going to town via Templestowe and Kew instead of through Heidelberg. They were surprised at the distances – about 3 ½ miles from Eltham to Templestowe, 6 miles from Eltham Shire hall to the Lower Heidelberg Road-Banksia Street intersection. NEW NEIGHBOURS For people on both sides of the river, the new bridge has turned distant friends into near neighbours. A Greensborough man on Sunday took 35 minutes to reach the home of a friend in East Doncaster, but the return trip over the new bridge took only 17 minutes. It will be some time yet before most people work out the possibilities in shorter and quicker trips form the north-eastern areas to the eastern and south-eastern suburbs. The coming of the warmer months will soon teach many, though the short cuts to Peninsular beaches and eastern suburban drive-ins. And before very long it is likely there will be a Tramways bus running from Templestowe to Eltham station. NEW BRIDGE STARTS THEM EXPLORING (1961, September 27).
