Federation University Australia was established on 1 January 2014. Formerly known as the University of Ballarat, its enabling legislation was the University of Ballarat Amendment (Federation University Australia) Act 2013. Although formally created as a University in 1994, the University of Ballarat has a lineage back to 1870 with the establishment of the School of Mines Ballarat, making it the third institution of higher learning to be established in Australia and the first to be established in regional Australia. On 1 January 1994, Ballarat University College became the University of Ballarat and in 1998 the University merged with three TAFE Institutes to become a dual sector institution with multiple campuses. On 1 January 2014, the University of Ballarat amalgamated with the Monash University Gippsland Campus to form Federation University Australia. In 2016, Federation University Australia announced plans to take possession, over a two-year period, of Monash’s Berwick Campus in the south-east corridor of Melbourne. The University’s commitment to educational and social equity, teaching excellence, research distinction, environmental sustainability and regional capacity building has enabled it to develop in a way that draws on its proud heritage to inform its future. Its regional character sets a framework for the University’s priorities but does not constrain it from serving wider community interests, nationally and internationally. Dr Paul Hemming joined the university council in 2007 and was appointed Chancellor in 2012, when he was also appointed chair of the Federation University Australia Foundation. He retired as Chancellor in October 2018. Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders on the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. Federation University Australia showcased its students and research at a luncheon for His Royal Highness The Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex KG GCVO, at the Mt Helen Campus on Sunday, 8 April. The University’s student leaders and academics joined other dignitaries and business representatives for the special event. “The University is deeply honoured to host HRH The Earl of Wessex and share his passion for volunteerism and The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award,” Professor Helen Bartlett, Vice-Chancellor, said. Prior to the luncheon HRH The Earl of Wessex experienced a Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony at the University. The program included showing HRH The Earl of Wessex concept plans for a refurbished Sports Science facility at the Mt Helen Campus.  Guests were treated to a performance by the Arts Academy’s renowned vocal ensemble Word of Mouth. At the conclusion of the luncheon, HRH The Earl of Wessex planted a tree at the Student Commons Courtyard. The visit to the University by HRH The Earl of Wessex was the first by a member of the Royal Family since Prince Charles visited in 1974. HRH The Earl of Wessex was in Australia to attend the Commonwealth Games and undertake additional engagements to recognise and promote The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award in Australia. This windcheater was worn by John Barker who was the son of E J Barker who from 1949-1960 was a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the Ballarat School of Mines (SMB). Then from 1960-1964 was Vice Principal at SMB and was Principal of SMB from 1964-76. Then from 1976-1987 was Foundation Director of the Ballarat College of Advanced Education (BCAE) until his retirement. The Library at Federation University was named in honour of E J Barker. John completed a Diploma of Mechanical Engineering at the Ballarat College of Advanced Education and a few years later a Bachelor of Engineering. John was a keen sportsman particularly enjoying hockey and sailing. He died as a result of an accident on 16 June 1994.This orange coloured cotton knit windcheater has a built-in v-shaped rib fabric inset at the top front. A heavy iron stamp is raised on a cam and let fall so that its weight causes the quartz which is held in the mortar box. This three head battery was installed in the mining laboratory of The School of Mines, Ballarat in 1898 and crused many hundreds of tons of quartz. It was reected on this site to commeorate the centenary of the School of Mines in 1870. Vice Chancellor was influential in promoting University of Ballarat in becoming a central player in the Ballarat and Western Victoria region. In 1998 he oversaw the amalgamation of the University with two Tafe institutions, which created the only multi-sectorial regional university in Australia. Professor James was a formal Ballarat City Councillor, the Chairman of the Ballarat Foundation from 2001 to 2008. He was also the recipient of the Centenary Medal in 2003 – an award created by the Centenary of Federation, which recognises the achievements of a cross-section of the Australian community, by honouring people who have contributed to society of government in Australia. John O'LOUGHLIN Born Snowtown, South Australia In 1980 John O'Loughlin's life changed when he started wheel throwing ceramic vessels. During this time he discarded the superfluous and unnecessary clutter collected on the journey of life, yet retaining the essence of what mattered to him. John O’Loughlin's later artworks, such as 'Reliquary No. 20' engages with the way in which organised religion, specifically the Catholic Church, deals with the translation of the spiritual into the material. Informed by his extensive travels and studies, O’Loughlin’s ceramics reference the reliquaries and church artefacts that connect the life of this world with that of faith in another world. Completing undergeduate and post graduate works at Federation University John O'Loughlin's honours thesis was entitled "Ways and Means of Meaning, The Use of Symbol and Surface as Expressive Media in Ceramic Sculpture". The University provided a serious ceramic studio equipped with all the research tools for advanced ceramic exploration. Access to raw materials and a variety of kilns combined with excellent lecturers, mentors and technicians inspired, motivated and challenged him to push his accumulating knowledge to higher levels. O'Loughlin's working method in the studio is one of quiet, determined interaction with clay, idea and content. Experimentation with a variety of temperatures, firing methods and atmospheric conditions has produced a broad tonal and textural palette. He has worked with various clay bodies overlaid with coloured oxides, slips and engobes as the foundation for many of his works. O'Loughlin ufilised raised surfaces from old cemetery tombstones using the impressed forms and textures in his constructions. This research led him to the use of dry engobes to create a sense of antiquity, with crusty and distressed surfaces that resemble objects neglected in the oceans. These objects seem covered with the accretions and accumulations of history when re-discovered and brought to the surface as miraculous objects of mystery and magic. Scott PEARCE (1972 - ) Scott Pearce was awarded at Ballarat Arts Foundation Award in 2005. He completed at Bachelor of Visual Art: Painting (Honours) at the University of Ballarat (now Federation University) in 2007. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. John O'LOUGHLIN Born Snowtown, South Australia In 1980 John O'Loughlin's life changed when he started wheel throwing ceramic vessels. During this time he discarded the superfluous and unnecessary clutter collected on the journey of life, yet retaining the essence of what mattered to him. John O’Loughlin's later artworks, such as 'Reliquary No. 20' engages with the way in which organised religion, specifically the Catholic Church, deals with the translation of the spiritual into the material. Informed by his extensive travels and studies, O’Loughlin’s ceramics reference the reliquaries and church artefacts that connect the life of this world with that of faith in another world. Completing undergeduate and post graduate works at Federation University John O'Loughlin's honours thesis was entitled "Ways and Means of Meaning, The Use of Symbol and Surface as Expressive Media in Ceramic Sculpture". The University provided a serious ceramic studio equipped with all the research tools for advanced ceramic exploration. Access to raw materials and a variety of kilns combined with excellent lecturers, mentors and technicians inspired, motivated and challenged him to push his accumulating knowledge to higher levels. O'Loughlin's working method in the studio is one of quiet, determined interaction with clay, idea and content. Experimentation with a variety of temperatures, firing methods and atmospheric conditions has produced a broad tonal and textural palette. He has worked with various clay bodies overlaid with coloured oxides, slips and engobes as the foundation for many of his works. O'Loughlin ufilised raised surfaces from old cemetery tombstones using the impressed forms and textures in his constructions. This research led him to the use of dry engobes to create a sense of antiquity, with crusty and distressed surfaces that resemble objects neglected in the oceans. These objects seem covered with the accretions and accumulations of history when re-discovered and brought to the surface as miraculous objects of mystery and magic. Mairin Ni Shiochain Máirín Ní Shíocháin’s practice reflects a lifelong affinity with non-human animals. Her observation of animals and birds in natural habitats in and around Ballarat and district was the foundation for this research. She won a Ballarat Art Foundation Award in 2012.
