Jean Hanna was one of a group of old collegians who presented a book containing the names of eighty former students who served World War II to Presbyterian Ladies College, Burwood. Jean, 93, had seen war firsthand, working twelve hour shifts in tent hospitals, nursing sick, wounded, amputees and POW's. By 1937 Jean was the sister-in-charge of the Alfred Hospital's operating theatre and after a European tour where she witnessed Germany arming, displaying swastikas everywhere and restricting movement in and out of Germany, Jean registered with the Australian Nursing Service and were called up. April 1940 saw Jean amoung the first Victorian nursing sisters to go overseas. Jean nursed in tent hospitals in Gaza, Mersa Matruh, Nazareth and Colombo before heading home to Australia to nurse sick and wounded from New Guinea. In April 1945 Jean went to another tent hospital in Borneo, where she cared for civilians and POW's, including a survivor of the Sandakan death march. Discharged in 1946, Jean joined the Alfred Hospital again until her retirement in 1962. A newspaper clipping of a story of five columns of text beneath two black and white photos. The story of Dorothy Paschke and the memorial built in honour of her service and sacrifice in the Second World War. Matron Paschke was aboard the Vyner Brooke ship when it was bombed. She made it on to a small raft with seven other nurses and some civillians. Despite their attempts to steer the raft towards Banka Island where the other nurses landed, the current pulled them out to sea. After eighteen hours, Dorothy and three others slid into the water to paddle alongside, in the hopes it would lighten the load and help them reach shore. The current pulled Dorothy further out to sea and she was not seen again. A memorial sundial has been built in her honour and stands at the Dimboola Memorial High School.Two pages of photocopies of black and white newspaper pages. The first page is a copy of half a page. This book has been written by Vanda Savill and is about the settlers in the Wallacedale area in Western Victoria. Wallacedale is 28 kilometres south west of Hamilton and was created by the draining of the Condah Swamp. Vanda Savill (1913-2005) and her husband ran a dairy farm and the Bower Birds Nest Museum and History Centre at Heywood. Vanda Savill was passionate about keeping alive the personal histories of local people and for 20 years she wrote and published many books about the areas in which she lived. This book is of interest because it tells the stories of settlers in the Wallacedale area of Western Victoria. It also has appeal because of the warm, conversational style of the author.This is a soft cover book of 216 pages. This book details the lives of the ancestors of the author, Graeme Davison. It begins with the story of Jane Hewett who migrated with her eight children to Australia from England in 1850. The book not only tells the story of the Hewett families but also gives a wider picture of Australian conditions at the time, making it a valuable social history of Australia in the 19th century and beyond. Graeme Davison, Emeritus Professor of History at Monash University in Melbourne, has also written five other books dealing with aspects of Australian history. This book is of high interest because it is an important social history of Australia detailing the lives of the Hewett families. It is also of significance to those in the Warrnambool region as a member of the Hewett family, John Hewett, settled in Warrnambool with his wife and family and was a local butcher there for some years. This is a soft cover book of 274 pages detailing the family history of the author Graeme Davison. This is the Weekly Times Annual of 1929. The Weekly Times newspaper was established in 1869 and was taken over by the Herald Newspaper group in 1892. It is a paper dedicated to rural affairs and is now the oldest rural newspaper in Australia. It has long been known as the ‘Bible of the Bush’. This annual contains many advertisements and photographs and sketches of places in rural Australia. It also has many articles, short stories and illustrations. Notable people that have contributed to this annual include Will Dyson (sketches), C.J.Dennis (poem), Vance Palmer (short story) and Norman Lindsay (reproduction of an art work). It also has a short story by Gertrude Hart, a novelist and short story writer. Her parents lived in Warrnambool in the 1850s (her father was the local Wesleyan minister) and her father retired to a place near to Warrnambool – Kirkstall. This attractive booklet is retained as an excellent example of Weekly Times Annuals in the past. It is also important because it has a short story by Gertrude Hart, a writer with connections to Warrnambool. This is a newspaper annual booklet of 68 pages.
