It is a multi-purpose shallow vessel, or dish with curved sides, ranging in length from 30–70 cm, and similar in shape to a canoe. Coolamons or pitchis were traditionally used by Aboriginal women to carry water, fruits, nuts, as well as to cradle babies. The necessary tools and equipment for hunting, fishing and warfare were one of the very few items that Aboriginals carried with them from place to place. Most were used for a multiplicity of purposes. Because many were made from raw natural materials, such as wood, generally only partial remains are found today. Milk is a key contributor to improving nutrition and food security particularly in developing countries. Improvements in livestock and dairy technology offer significant promise in reducing poverty and malnutrition in the world. Pasteurization is used to kill harmful micro-organisms by heating the milk for a short time and then immediately cooling it. In the past, milk was always packaged in glass milk bottles The first glass bottle packaging for milk was used in the 1870s. The first company to do so may have been the New York Dairy Company in 1877 with a small glass lid and a tin clip. Lewis P. Whiteman holds the first patent for a glass milk bottle c1884,which was sealed with a waxed paper disk. The Express Dairy Company in England began glass bottle production in 1880. ... Pty Ltd in 1926 and Kraft Foods Limited in 1950. (from Powerhouse Museum) ...Buyers were now assured of the nutritional value of Vegemite, which has been a market leader ever since. ...Vegemite hit the market in 1923 but failed to sell. In 1928 the company renamed its spread Parwill to compete against the top-selling British import, Marmite but Parwill flopped too. In 1922 the Fred Walker Company hired a chemist, Percy Callister, to develop a useful food from vitamin-rich used yeast being dumped by breweries. Using enzymes to split open the yeast cells, Callister extracted the contents and blended them with vegetables and salt into a sticky black paste with a sharp taste. They tried the Vegemite name again and gave the product away with Walker cheese products and a couple of cars as prizes before Australians finally fell for it. In 1939 Vegemite was officially endorsed by the British Medical Association as a good source of Vitamin B and was included in Australian Army rations during World War II. Buyers were now assured of the nutritional value of Vegemite, which has been a market leader ever since. The Fred Walker Company became the Kraft Walker Cheese Co. Pty Ltd in 1926 and Kraft Foods Limited in 1950. (from Powerhouse Museum) This type of jar was used to package Vegemite between 1935 and 1945. Vegemite has been an 'Australian icon' since World War II when it was recognised as one of the world's highest food sources of vitamin B. It was sent to war with the troops and rationed at home. The marketing strategy that put Vegemite in 9 out of every 10 Australian homes in the 1940s, 50s and 60s emphasised the value of Vegemite to children's health. Emerald Museum & Nobelius Heritage ParkContainer - Free School Milk Bottle, Australian Glass Manufacturers, 1954
... This was not the first free milk program - for example, Victoria had a winter-only program for a time - but was the first to standardise it across Australia. ...Personally, I would rank the abolition of school milk as one of the crowning achievements of the Whitlam government." The free milk program in many ways seems to be a remnant of a time where Australian nutrition policy aimed to counter hunger and maximise caloric intake rather than minimise it. ...This bottle was manufactured in 1954 and donated alongside an accompanying note which implies it was a free school milk bottle given to a girl in Grade 2 in that year. In 2018 it was shown to the original recipient's grandchild, who wrote the accompanying note, before both were likely donated to us. The year of manufacture can be determined from the '4' by the Australian Glass Manufacturers maker's mark; the context indicates the bottle is from the 1950s, while the 4 indicates it is from a year ending with 4. The free school milk program for children up to 13 was established by the Federal Government in 1950 and implemented in Victoria by 1951. This was not the first free milk program - for example, Victoria had a winter-only program for a time - but was the first to standardise it across Australia. The program continued for two decades until a 1973 report assessed that the program was poor value for money, causing the Whitlam government to abolish it. In the words of Australian Food Timeline: "Recollections of the scheme vary. While some remember it fondly, most seem to have unpleasant memories of milk left to become warm and unappetising. Many claim it put them off milk forever. Personally, I would rank the abolition of school milk as one of the crowning achievements of the Whitlam government."The free milk program in many ways seems to be a remnant of a time where Australian nutrition policy aimed to counter hunger and maximise caloric intake rather than minimise it. This bottle and its accompanying note is an example of how much nutrition policy and educational standards has changed since the 1950s.This item was donated with a printed note which has been included in its record. This main item is a small glass milk bottle with a thread for a screw-on lid (not included). For a little over half its heigh, the walls of the bottle are vertical, before they curve inwards to make the top slightly narrower than the base. The base is stipled, and near the base is a makers mark and a pattern of dots denoting the mould from which the bottle was formed. The printed note is two pages, stapled in the top-left corner, with page numbers handwritten in red in the top right.Bottle, Makers Marking: "4 [Australian Glass Manufacturers Logo] M10357" Accompanying Note: Page 1: "I interviewed my Grandma about when she was in / Grade 1 in 1953 and how school has changed to / now in 2018. / That is 65 years difference." Page 2: "Some other things that have changed. / - Girls could only wear skirts to school, no pants. / - Boys and Girls had different play areas. / - At recess every child was given a bottle of milk to drink. / - Everyone walked to school."education, 1950s -

The pages alternate between a page on the left containing recipes, and a page on the right instructing readers to paste recipes cut out from the Argus there. "Vesta," also known as Stella Allan, began her journalistic career as an active feminist and socialist in New Zealand who, after qualifying to practice law, overcame gendered exclusion from the all-male press gallery to work a prestigious position as a parliamentary correspondent. After moving to Melbourne in 1903, she was swiftly employed by the Argus newspaper and became the lead writer for the women's sections in 1908, continuing to work in the role until she retired in 1939. During this time she extensively covered domestic and community welfare topics, alongside advice columns replying to a vast quantity of letters; her writing contributed to creating a space in newspaper journalism to address the interests of women at the time. During her time at the Argus she moved away from the radical activism of her youth, becoming an establishment figure over the course of her long career. She was a prominent figure in Melbourne life as President of the Victorian Women’s Writers’ Club, the Lyceum Club, and a foundation member of the Australian Journalists’ Association. Even after her retirement from the Argus, her journalism continued to have an influence; during the Second World War, Stella reported from England on the wartime experiences of women and children. This recipe book was one of several written by "Vesta" - most likely, this is the 1939 edition - and aimed to provide a collection of nutritious recipes to aid women in choosing meals to cook for their households. The introduction to the book stresses the importance of nutrition, referring to a League of Nations survey that revealed that "in spite of our abundant and varied food supply, nutritional and dental diseases are much too prevalent in Australia." It calls on the women of Australia to fulfil the "great responsibility," of choosing and cooking nutritious meals. The cardstock front cover of this 32-page booklet features text denoting the title and author in red, and an illustration in blue of a woman wearing a chef's hat holding a pie in front of her, with steam rising from it. The rear features publication information and an advertisement. The booklet is bound with a single staple through the spine, and constructed from eight individual pieces of paper each with two pages of text printed on each side.non-fictionThis is a recipe book, with sections for recipes for "Soups", "Meat Dishes", "Breakfast, Luncheon and Supper Dishes", "Egg Dishes and Pastry Recipes", "Sweets Course", and "For Afternoon Tea". Lewis P. At the time, 160,000 new glass bottles were needed in Melbourne alone every week to keep up the delivery of 1.3 million bottles of milk a day. n 1970, the blow-moulded disposable plastic milk bottle was introduced. In 1987, only about 2% of milk was still being sold in glass bottles.
