Subjects had a long standing connection with the Mission Visual Record of Mission staff. The Oliver family played a significant and long term role as a family in the leadership, maintenance and publicising the services and role of the Mission from 1930-1960. Articles, a film and regular lectures and canvassing were used to generate funding and awareness of the importance and significance of the Mission to Shipping services for Australia. The Chapel attached to the 1917 Mission Building has been known variously over the years as: Memorial Chapel ( WWI Merchant seamen) ; St Peter Mariner's Chapel and St Peter's, Mariner's Church. In current day usage due to modest size it is referred to as Chapel. Frank Leslie Oliver is photographed here in King's College, London in June 1919. Second row standing 8th from the left. According to his autobiography Frank Oliver, senior Chaplain from 1930-1960 at MtS, studied primarily at Trinity College, University of Melbourne after war service in the Army Medical Corps. St Nicholas Seamen's Church was furnished thanks to donations of supporters of the Mission.The document lists all the gifts donated by generous supporters of the Mission in 1946. The chapel was built during World War 2 as memorial to the merchant seamen lost during the war. Moira Bird Oliver (nee Good) daughter of Rev Good of St Jude's Carlton first met Frank Oliver circa 1915. They were engaged for some 7 years while Frank did wartime service and then on return to Melbourne completed a Theology degree at Trinity College and was then ordained. They married on the 18th of July 1925 at St Jude's Church in Carlton. Frank Oliver was then naval chaplain on the HMAS Platypus. After various postings the married couple eventually arrived and were appointed to the Chaplaincy to the Mission to Seamen based at 717 Flinders St from 1930-1960. The Olivers weathered many significant issues between 1930 and 1960, a depression, WW2, strikes and waterfront unrest in the 1950s and financial struggles resulting from changed shipping patterns. This photograph was gifted by a descendant who told us that Mrs Oliver was a very enthusiastic photographer. Mrs Oliver was a well loved and respected woman and is memorialised by a window in the Mission Chapel. It is possible she is one of the many anonymous photographers who contributed various photographs especially of the 1930s and forties that make up a substantial part of the Mission Heritage Collection. A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE Before the increase of air transport, everything that arrived or departed from Australia did so via the ports and wharves. The Mission to Seafarersis not a Victorian initiative, but rather a global network that currently operates in over 260 ports worldwide, assisting over 1.3 million seafaring men and women each year. The importance of the Mission’s role is demonstrated in the Chaplain’s Report 1947, which notes that ships and their crews are: “...inextricably linked with the well-being of Australian industrial and economic life... This, in turn, means that you cannot escape some share in responsibility for their welfare.” This window, titled ‘Noli Me Tangere’, was installed in memoriam of Moira Oliver, the wife of the Reverend Frank Oliver, chaplain at the Mission 1930-60, and whose dedication in life and service to the welfare of seafarers was inspirational to many.Reflections of the Sea was an exhibition of 10 framed montage of photographs from the mission's archive collection showcasing 10 stained glass windows from the St Peter chapel. This exhibition curated by Georgia Melville and Catherine McLay, and funded by PROV and Creative Victoria, was displayed in the World Trade Centre Wharf Gallery in June July 2013 and toured to Queenscliff Maritime Museum. The photographs of the windows were taken by scientific photographer Justine M. Philip. John Rodney Oliver (7 July 1931 – 26 September 2010) was the son of Frank and Moira. Rodney Oliver was born on 7 July 1931, and lived for many years at the Missions to Seamen at the Flinders St Extension. Rodney was schooled at Melbourne Grammar, matriculating in 1948. Then, after a couple of years as a lumberjack and jackaroo, he commenced at University of Melbourne, beginning more than half a century’s association with Trinity College. Graduating with a BA in 1953, Rodney then made the first of many trips to England, reading theology at Bishop’s College, Cheshunt. A man who revelled in scholarship, he was also a competitive and energetic bowler, snooker and squash player. Ordained deacon on 23 September 1956, in the St Albans Diocese, his first ministry as curate began at the picturebook village of Much Hadham, where he met the love of his life, Lesley Brooks. Rodney was ordained priest on 5 January 1958, at the Missions to Seamen, Melbourne, commenced twelve years as Chaplain of Ballarat Grammar School in February 1958, and returned to England to marry Lesley in early 1961. Bishop Stephen, chairman of the executive committee of the mission in Melbourne, presided over the conference, which was opened by Archbishop Head celebrating Holy Communion in the Chapel of St. Peter at the mission. Among the questions considered was the problem of foreign vessels, from which nothing is contributed toward the support of the missions. It was felt that there was great scope for work of an international character, and that every effort should be made by the chaplains to bring men from the ships of different countries together. The chaplains said that many thousands of men from foreign ships attended the mission institutes. Efforts will be made for more contact to be made with men on coastal ships, and commendation of men from one port to the next will ensure that the needs of men are cared for as well as possible. An ordained chaplain will be sent from London for a new mission at Geraldton (WA), and a new mission will also be opened at Port Kembla (N.SW.). The chaplains will endeavour to obtain police cooperation in keeping docks and wharves free from undesirable persons. It is hoped that an effort will be made to seek the co-operation of the port authorities in order to ensure the pos-sibility of ships being allowed to be alongside during week-ends and public holidays without having to face the full port charges. To avoid the heavy charges the ships now anchor in the bay during week-ends and public holidays. Melbourne was chosen as the central port for Australia for supplies for mis-sions to seamen, and it was decided that the conference should be held every three years, in Melbourne. The Mission to seamen provided special services and support for cadets and officers of the merchant fleets. Officers had access to accommodation at the Mission and were encouraged as senior crew to improve pastoral and counselling skills that may benefit crews at sea. This desk was donated to the MTSV in 2017 by a descendant of Padre Oliver, Chaplain from 1930-1960.This desk belonged to Rodney Oliver and is believed to have been used by Padre Oliver and his wife while Chaplain, and the family resided at the MTS and thereafter in subsequent parish postings. The desk makes a link with one of the longest serving Chaplains who had a significant influence through the intense period of operations early - mid 20th C. The Padre's influence was substantial. The desk is also believed to have been used by son Rodney Oliver who also served the Mission as Chairman in the later 20th C.A four drawer leather topped desk with detachable unit comprising double sliding door lockable cabinet with small bookshelf backed with shallow pediment. Sorting / sectioned pigeonhole interiors to the top cabinets see images. The main table desk appears to be of a different wood with green leather inset to top surface and heavy legs. Drawers with heavily decorated brass handles. While there are some references from time to time to a war memorial fund in both Mission Annual reports from the 1930s and news clippings the actual organisation has not been well researched. More information is needed about formation and member details. As the board primarily was designed for WW1 it may have fallen out of use post WW2. This War memorial fund may have been superseded by a national organisation see links above. JM 2020.The Katoomba crews led by Captain E.
