This was the fifth time the unit exercised its freedom of marching into the city with swords drawn, bayonets fixed and drums beating. The honour is usually bestowed upon local regiments, in recognition of their dedicated service, and it is common for military units to periodically exercise their freedom by arranging a parade through the city. The event began with a ceremonial parade at the Queen Elizabeth II Oval. The RAAF Central Command Band provided the music at the parade. After formal inspections of the troops, the Army Survey Regiment saluted as it marched past the Reviewing Officer - Mayor of Bendigo Councillor James Douglass, military dignitaries and guests. Led by the Regiment’s CO – LTCOL Rene van den Tol, the unit marched down View St, along Pall Mall and to Gaol Rd. Regiment members were treated to a civic reception at the City Hall after the ceremony. The Regiment also exercised its Freedom of Entry with anniversary parades in 1977, 1980, 1985, 1992 and 1996. This was the sixth time the unit exercised its freedom of marching into the city with swords drawn, bayonets fixed and drums beating. The honour is usually bestowed upon local regiments, in recognition of their dedicated service, and it is common for military units to periodically exercise their freedom by arranging a parade through the city. Led by the Regiment’s CO – LTCOL Bob McHenry, the unit marched down View St in the CBD, along Pall Mall and up Gaol Rd to the Queen Elizabeth II Oval. The ceremonial parade followed with a march past the guests of honour, Mayor of Bendigo Councillor James Douglass and military dignitaries. The parade concluded after formal inspections of the troops. The Regiment also exercised its Freedom of Entry with anniversary parades in 1977, 1980, 1985, 1990 and 1996.This black and white photograph of the Army Survey Regiment were taken on the occasion of the Freedom of Entry parade to the City of Bendigo in 1992. ... Freedom of the City of Wodonga...The tradition of Freedom of Entry to a city stems from a custom observed by British Regiments in marching through the city of London. ...A framed certificate declaring the granting of Freedom of the City of Wodonga to Veterans, Ex-service and Service men and women of Australia who served Australia since the cessation of hostilities of the second World War. ...The tradition of Freedom of Entry to a city stems from a custom observed by British Regiments in marching through the city of London. ...The Right, Title, Privilege, Honour and Distinction of marching through the streets of a city on all ceremonial occasions with bayonets fixed, drums beating, bands playing and colours flying is one of the most interesting of the Military Traditions. The tradition of Freedom of Entry to a city stems from a custom observed by British Regiments in marching through the city of London. The fathers of the city of London claimed that they had the right to forbid bodies of Armed Forces from marching through the city precincts with bayonets fixed, colours flying and music playing, basing this claim on 'Ancient Privileges' which appear to have originated shortly after Charles Il became King in 1660. Military units were then only allowed to enter the city by invitation. The custom has been adopted by many Australian cities and shires. The privilege is usually only extended to Units which have a close association with the city and provides a means of honouring an Army Corps. The Freedom of the City of Wodonga has been conferred on different units based at Bandiana on several occasions. This Certificate commemorates the granting of Freedom of the City of Wodonga on the occasion of the 10th Anniversary of the Vietnam and Associated Veterans Club which was accompanied by a military parade on 11th August 2003. This Certificate is significant because it recognises the relationship between the City of Wodonga and the military forces which have served in the district.A framed certificate declaring the granting of Freedom of the City of Wodonga to Veterans, Ex-service and Service men and women of Australia who served Australia since the cessation of hostilities of the second World War. It bears the common seal of the City of Wodonga and was signed by Mayor Lisa Mahood, Councillor John Watson and Chief Executive Officer Peter Marshall.freedom of the city wodonga, military wodonga -

... Allies For Freedom and Life..."Allies For Freedom and Life"...Flags of Australia’s World War I allies are depicted within the Australian outline, including that of Imperial Russia. Allies For Freedom and Life Badge Fundraising Button ...Frances Rigg was a local business identity in Kew, at one stage managing the local branch of the English, Scottish and Australian (ES&A) Bank at 175 High Street from c. 1920 until the 1940s. After Francis Rigg’s death, the collection of buttons and medallions was inherited by his son, Ken Rigg (1922-2014). The collection was subsequently donated to the Kew Historical Society in 2015 by Francis' grandson, Adrian Rigg, at the time of the Gallipoli & Beyond Commemoration in 2015. The collection covers a period of almost 40 years. The majority of the buttons are patriotic buttons, issued and sold during and immediately after the First World World War (1914-1918) to raise funds for national and overseas causes. The collection also includes a number of locally significant sporting event buttons and sporting club medallions, issued in the 1920s and 1930s.Patriotic and other pressed tin buttons and badges were produced in large numbers in the first decades of the twentieth century. By nature, insubstantial and ephemeral, they have not always survived. The collections of badges, buttons and medallions in the Kew Historical Society collection is homogenous and yet diverse, ranging from buttons sold to raise funds for the war efforts in 1914-18 and 1939-45, to those used at festivals and sporting events. Because of the manufacturing process, many surviving buttons and badges have been affected by inadequate storage, suffering from oxidisation and physical damage. These survivors are now historically and socially significant artefacts, revealing much about the attitudes and values of the period in which they were produced. Their widespread distribution means that they are frequently significant at a local, state, national and international level.A small circular pressed metal badge with a white outline of Australia against a dark blue background. In 1994, the City of Kew was amalgamated, together with the former Cities of Camberwell and Hawthorn, into the new City of Boroondara (1994- ). Like other local government entities of the period, Kew was administered by town clerks. The two notable town clerks in Kew's history were H. H. (Henry Hirst) Harrison (1868-1955) and W. D. (William Dickie) Birrell (1899-1974). Harrison was appointed to the position in 1901 and retired in 1938 after 37 years. Birrell, appointed Acting Town Clerk in 1921, became Town Clerk in 1938, following Harrison's retirement. He continued in this role until his retirement in 1966.This card is part of an historically significant civic collection, containing hundreds of separate invitations, documents, greeting cards, programmes and tickets issued and/or collected by successive town clerks. Items in the collection illuminate the political, social and cultural history of the district. As a continuous record, ranging across most decades of the Twentieth Century, they reveal changing tastes in design, values and relationships in the history of local government in Victoria.ON THE OCCASION OF THE CONFERRING OF THE / FREEDOM OF THE CITY OF MELBOURNE UPON HIS EXCELLENCY FIELD MARSHALL SIR WILLIAM SLIM / GCB, GCMG, GCVC, GBE, DSO, MC, KStJ, / GOVERNOR GENERAL OF THE COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA / THE RIGHT HONOURABLE THE LORD MAYOR / (CR F W THOMAS) / REQUESTS THE PLEASURE OF THE COMPANY OF / Councillor F E O'Brien / AT DINNER / AT THE TOWN HALL, MELBOURNE / ON SATURDAY, 8TH NOVEMBER, 1958, AT 6.45 FOR 7 PM / EVENING DRESS - DECORATIONS / THE FAVOUR IS REQUESTED OF A REPLY BY 23RD OCTOBER, TO THE ASSISTANT SECRETARY TO THE LORD MAYOR / ON RECEIPT OF ACCEPTANCE ENTREE CARD WILL BE SENTcivic invitations -- kew (vic), city of melbourne, field marshall slim.-- governor general of australia -

Freedom of Entry has its roots in military traditions dating back to ancient Rome, where soldiers were not allowed to enter the city without permission due to concerns about maintaining order. This practice evolved over centuries, particularly after the English Civil War, when loyal military units were granted the right to enter cities as a mark of honor and trust. In contemporary times, Freedom of Entry is a formal honor bestowed by local governments on military units, allowing them to march through the streets with swords drawn, drums beating, and colors flying. This event typically includes a ceremonial parade, where the unit is challenged by local authorities, symbolizing the community's recognition of the military's service and commitment. The granting of Freedom of Entry represents the highest civic honor a city can confer on a military unit. It strengthens the bond between the military and the local community, acknowledging the unit's historical ties and contributions. Events celebrating Freedom of Entry often draw large crowds, showcasing community support for the armed forces. The Certificate of Freedom of Entry to Bendigo was granted to A.H.Q Survey Regt in 1970. Signed by JCH Jeffrey, Mayor. This was a great honor to be granted to the unit and this booklet records the exercising of that privilege on 26 October 1990. This booklet records the senior Officers of the Royal Australian Survey Corps and their appointments and dates of service as well as the unit members participating in the Freedom of Entry Parade that was held on the Queen Elizabeth Oval, Bendigo. The Reviewing Officer was Cr AJ Douglass JP the Mayor of the City of Greater Bendigo. The Army Survey Regiment exercised its Freedom of Entry with ceremonial parades in 1970, 1977, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995 and finally in 1996 when the Unit was disbanded. Conferring of Honorary Freedom of the City of Kew...Multi-page programme given to attendees at the ceremony conferring the honorary freedom of the City of Kew on the Rt Hon R G Menzies...As a continuous record, ranging across most decades of the Twentieth Century, they reveal changing tastes in design, values and relationships in the history of local government in Victoria. civic invitations -- kew (vic) kew municipal library w d vaughan Multi-page programme given to attendees at the ceremony conferring the honorary freedom of the City of Kew on the Rt Hon R G Menzies Conferring of Honorary Freedom of the City of Kew Document Programme City of Kew ...The Municipality of Kew (1860-1863), the Borough of Kew (1863-1910), the Town of Kew (1910-1921) and the City of Kew (1921-1994) were local government instrumentalities in the State of Victoria. As a continuous record, ranging across most decades of the Twentieth Century, they reveal changing tastes in design, values and relationships in the history of local government in Victoria.Multi-page programme given to attendees at the ceremony conferring the honorary freedom of the City of Kew on the Rt Hon R G Menziescivic invitations -- kew (vic), kew municipal library, w d vaughan -
