From information found online: 'The Royal Dublin Fusiliers was an infantry regiment of the British Army, which recruited in the east of Ireland. Created in 1881 by the amalgamation of two former East India Company regiments, it was disbanded in 1922 on the establishment of the Irish Free State.' These were with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', arriving in Portsea in 1920. Holmes Family WW1 memorabilia. 06 Apr 1916 - The Battle of St Eloi Craters, Canadian Expeditionary Forces Major Operation. “… the British had been patiently tunnelling since August (1915) at nearby St Eloi, about three miles south of Ypres, and adjacent to the Canadian trenches. Throughout the winter, the tunnelling crept ever closer to a dominant German-held feature dubbed “The Mound.” When the tunnels were completed in early March, tons of explosives were emplaced in six locations and on March 27, 1916, at 4:14 a.m. the charges were set off. Two German companies were wiped out and large sections of the German trenches were destroyed, but the British 9th Brigade’s attack faltered and became a bloody close-quarters slugging match, with the last bomb crater captured only on April 3.” (Zuehlke, Mark. A magazine published for British servicemen during World War One. It contains articles for the soldiers, poems and short stories. It is published by the 26th Royal Fusiliers, who were a group of men that came from the Banking industry. There were only two editions published, this one from June 1916 and another from July 1916. The phenomenon of Pals' Battalions began as early as August 1914, when 1,600 men volunteered in a single week for a 'Stockbrokers' Battalion' of the Royal Fusiliers. In the next two years, over 600 Pals' Battalions were formed, many from the men of individual towns, but others from specific trades or professions. The 26th Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers – the Bankers' Battalion – was announced in July 1915. It was launched on the initiative of the Lord Mayor of London, to be raised from men working in the City's banks and insurance offices. The connection with Legacy is not known, though the founding Legatees, and all those up to the 1940s, were all returned servicemen from the first World War. The helmet was captured by William J Hanna, Royal Irish Fusiliers. Hanna was wounded during the 1916 Battle of the Somme.World War One German Army steel helmet. The outer surface is painted. Two lugs/ventilation holes are visible on each side. Rivets securing the missing headband are also visible. The front of the helmet has an extended visor whilst the back and sides also project to cover the nape of the neck and ears. Portrait of King George V (Duke of Kent) 1935Presented to the 6th Battalion Royal Melbourne Regiment by an Allied Battalion the Royal Fusiliers as a toke of friendship and esteem. This Portrait would have hung pride of place in the officers mess from 1935-? The portarait is also signed by the artist, an M.C reciepient, as well as the the reigning monarch, and colonel in chief of the presenting unit. It is supported by a letter from the colonel of the Presenting unit, Maj Gen Hill CB.CMG.DSO, and as such is hghly provinanced Colour print of His Magesty King George V wearing the unaiform of the the Royal Fusilliers, Read coat with decorations and blue sash under a navy blue over coat. The print is signed in lead pencil by the artist and by King George V on the lower edge. A regimental badge is present in the top right of the image. The picture is framed in a pewter coloured frame with ornate leaf mouldings in the corners. On the lower edge of the frame is a plaque which states " From the Colonel and Officers of the Royal Fusilliers 1935" Also included with the portait is a letter on Royal Fusiliers letterhead dated October 23 1935 " From - Maj-Gen. W.P.H. Hill. CB. CMG. DSO., Colonel. Affixed to the belt is a brass regimental shoulder badge, with the initials “ RF” ( Royal Fusiliers ) and brass flaming grenade with 7 points.
