VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. Mission to Seafarers VictoriaLetter - Petition, October November 1897
... Curd, master ship Narcissus; James Horne, master ship Loch Garry; T.Tait, master ship Loch Ryan; T. ...Stevens - DHARWAR / Thomas Curd - NARCISSUS; / James Horn - LOCH GARRY / T.Tait - LOCH RYAN ; / T.NIlsen - Hebe ; / G.C. ...Curd, master ship Narcissus; James Horne, master ship Loch Garry; T.Tait, master ship Loch Ryan; T. ...This document reveals the way in which Mission to Seafarers grew in response to demand. With increased shipping to Australia for all purposes, the need for the then existing Mission to grow to be conveniently located and to accommodate seafarers became increasingly evident. This document also shows the formal nature of documents and petitions in the 1890s and documents the names of twenty-two contemporaneous ships and their respective captains. The Anna, Dharwar and Mermerus arrived in port at the end of July 1897. The Carmanina arrived on the 21 October 1897. The Loch Katrine, at the end of the list, arrived on 5 November 1897. The letter was published in the Argus, 22 December 1897: "APPEAL FOR SEAMEN. TO THE EDITOR OF THE ARGUS. Sir, I beg that in the interests of the Victorian Seamen's Mission you will be kind enough to publish the appended testimony of the ship masters who for many years have been trading to this port, and therefore have had many opportunities of judging the effects of his work. The mission has much need of monetary assistance, and, should any of your numenous leaders deem it worthy of support, the committee would feel most grateful for any help that may be given in this direction. It has been the pleasure of the committee as far as possible to supply the crews of all outward bound steamers and sailing vessels with literature for their use on the voyage. My former appeals through your columns for leading matter have always been liberally responded to, and I trust that should any of our booksellers have any surplus stock of periodicals, religious and secular, illustrated or otherwise, at the end of the year, they will kindly remember the Victorian Seamen's Mission and the sailors. Private individuals also who may have stacks of literature by them, if they would kindly send some to the Seamen's Institute, Beach street, Port Melbourne, would cause the cheering of many a dark and lonely hour in the seamen's life. From 900 to 1.200 parcels have hitherto been given to the sailors and firemen annually by this mission, and we should be extremely grateful to those who would place us in a position to continue such donations in the future. Yours, &c. , E. JAMES, Chaplain to the Mission. Seamen's Institute, Beach street, Port Melbourne, Dec. 10." -------------------------------------------------- "To the Executive Committee of the Victorian Seamen's Mission, Melbourne. "Ladies and Gentleman, "We, the undersigned captains of several ships now lying at the Melbourne wharves think it most desirable that the Victorian Seamen's Mission, being the mission that has for so many years shown a most part their interest in the spiritual, moral, and social well-being of the seamen of all nationalities, shall him on the banks of the Yarra an institute such as that at Port Melbourne, where sailors of every grade could profitably and pleasantly spend their evenings. At almost every other seaport in the world such institutions are being provided for seamen, and we are satisfied from our opinion of the Melbourne public that the matter needs only to be prominently brought under their notice to be accomplished. We are confident that the good work of the mission is being hampered by its not having such a place near the shipping at the Melbourne wharves. Our crews are at present placed at a great dis advantage through not having an institute more convenient to the scene of their labours than that at Port Melbourne, which, on a very wet or a very hot, is not easily reached. If a site could be obtained immediately above the Gasworks but on the other side of Flinders street extension, that is to say, on the lower part of the land on which the Harbour Trust offices are built, it would be most convenient for the shipping on both the north and south side of the river. Trusting that it may be possible to do some thing to meet this long felt want, We suscribe ourselves, Yours respectfully, Geo.H Steven, master ship Dharwar; Thos. Curd, master ship Narcissus; James Horne, master ship Loch Garry; T.Tait, master ship Loch Ryan; T. Nilsen, master ship Hebe; G. Ch Christian, master ship Anna; R.E. Peasley, master ship Seminole; Wm. Martin, master ship Loch Ness; T.C. Martin, master ship Loch Tay; W.H. Bennett, master ship Loch Vennachar; J. Raglan Brodie, master s.s. Warrnambool; James E. Reid, master s.s. Star of New Zealand; A. F. Svhanstrom, master ship Hermes; Alex. Smith, master ship Sophocles; W. Y. Bunn, master ship Carmanian; William Anderson, master ship Loch Katrine."This petition is historically significant as it is documentary evidence of the need for a new facility for seafarers signed and presented by the captains of 21 ships, including several of the sister ships of the Loch Ard. The need for a new facility was a result of changes in shipping and the use of the Melbourne ports in the 1890's and this document supported the pressure on the Harbour offices to finally release land for an appropriate building in the early 20th C.Mounted hand-written petition to the Executive Committee of the Victorian Seaman's Mission Melbourne. The letter petitions the Executive Committee to create a facility on the wharves, "where sailors of every grade could profitably and pleasantly spend their evenings." This portion of the letter takes up three quarters of the document. The remainder has two lists, one of twelve captain's signatures and the other of the names of their ships. The list is continued on the reverse side with an additional nine signatures and corresponding ship names. In cursive handwriting: To The Executive Committee of the Victorian Seamans Mission', / Melbourne / Ladies and Gentlemen / we the undersigned captains....... "To the Executive Committee of the Victorian Seamen's Mission, Melbourne. Wentworth...Portland...Portland Bay...anchor...ship’s anchor...Peter Ronald...Garry...James Henty and Co Henty Brothers Captain H. Browne First Mate T. Gay Second Mate W. Wentworth Portland Portland Bay anchor ship’s anchor Peter Ronald Garry Hayden Tim Goodall Colin Goodall Pering’s Improved Anchor A large forged, wrought iron anchor from the wreck of the CHILDREN. ...The anchor is from the wooden sailing ship CHILDREN, which was wrecked at Childers Cove east of Warrnambool on the 14th of January 1839 with the loss of 16 lives. The Children anchor was raised from the wreck site by Flagstaff Hill Divers: Peter Ronald, Garry Hayden (Terang, still), Tim Goodall (now Warrnambool), and Colin Goodall (now Warrnambool), on Sunday, 3rd January 1974. A week or so later, it was dragged up the cliffs and taken to Warrnambool. It is now on display near the entrance to the Maritime Museum and Village. It appears to be a Pering’s Improved Anchor, developed at Portsmouth after 1813. The addition of broad curvature to the anchor arms provided a stronger purchase than the pre-existing Admiralty Old Pattern Long Shanked Anchor with straight arms. However, the evidence of hammer-welding of the separate pieces of the arms and palms to the central shank, peaked crown and flat palms, suggests the manufacture is before the 1831 Rodger’s Anchor design, which cast both arms and their flukes as one piece that was then attached to the shank by a bolt through the crown. This identification seems consistent with the date of the CHILDREN’s construction in 1824. The CHILDREN was a three-masted barque with a wooden hull built at Liverpool in England. The vessel was bought by the Henty family of Portland (Australia Felix) in 1837 for regular coastal trading between Van Diemens Land (now Tasmania), the Port Phillip District of New South Wales and South Australia. Only 255 tons burden (92 feet in length, with a beam of 25 feet and depth of 17 feet), it sailed from Launceston bound for Adelaide in late December 1838, on its first Australian voyage and under the English master who had brought the barque out, Captain H. Browne. On board the CHILDREN were 24 passengers, including 9 children, the captain and 14 crew; livestock of 1500 sheep, 8 bullocks and 7 horses; general cargo of beef, pork, tobacco, tripe, butter, limejuice, horse hair, currants, lead shot, beer and spirits; 5,000 house bricks from London; and six whaling boats with associated whaling gear. The vessel was battered by gale-force north-westerly winds shortly after setting out from Launceston on 11 January 1839, and adverse sailing conditions persisted for the next four days. At 11 pm on the 14th of January 1839, and many miles north and east of the captain’s navigated position, the CHILDREN struck the Pinnacle, a limestone stack off what is now called Childers Cove. Within half an hour, the ship was destroyed. As well as the loss of livestock and cargo, 16 passengers and crew perished, including the captain, six men, one woman and nine children. In 1931, shifting sands at Childers Cove uncovered the skeleton of an adult male. In 1951, another two skeletons were exposed by storms, an adult male and a child. In 1963, some district scuba divers retrieved a small signal cannon from the site. And in 1974, Flagstaff Hill recovered the anchor and some house bricks. The anchor recovered from the Children's wreck is significant as part of the equipment of the early 19th-century barque. The 1839 wreck and recovered artefacts are examples of the construction methods and materials used in that era and can be used to study the evolution of shipbuilding methods and principles. The wreck of the Children is of state significance as one of colonial Victoria’s earliest and most significant maritime disasters, and one of the first vessels lost in the Western District. This is recognised by its inclusion on the Victorian Heritage Register, VHR No. S116. Little is left on the seabed to mark the tragedy, apart from some of the house bricks intended for the Henty settlement. A large forged, wrought iron anchor from the wreck of the CHILDREN. Flat hammer-welded flukes on opposing curved arms and a peaked crown. It has a metal, elbowed stock or cross-bar and a heavy-duty pinned, flat-ring shackle for the anchor chain. It is in fair condition but extensively corroded after 135 years on the seabed. flagstaff hill, flagstaff hill maritime museum and village, warrnambool, maritime museum, maritime village, great ocean road, shipwreck coast, shipwreck artefact, children, barque, three-masted, liverpool, childer’s cove, port campbell, 1839 shipwreck, 1939 wreck, james henty and co, henty brothers, captain h. browne, first mate t. gay, second mate w. wentworth, portland, portland bay, anchor, ship’s anchor, peter ronald, garry hayden, tim goodall, colin goodall, pering’s improved anchor -

It was built on a site once owned by John Fitzgerald (1850s). The land was later acquired by H. V. McKay who had transferred his Sunshine Harvester Works to the area in 1905 - 7. In 1920, the Albion railway station was moved nearer Ballarat Road at the request of Mr McKay. More people came to live in the area including soldier settlers.Albion Primary School's mission is to 'Aim High' in all we do so that our students grow to be socially capable, reach their full academic potential and become caring, respectful community minded people. Albion Primary School is located in a residential area in Albion, a small pocket of the local government area of Brimbank, approximately 10 kilometres west of Melbourne and was established in 1926. Our current enrolment is 199 students. We have a rich cultural diversity amongst our school community. The school is set around a courtyard with spacious playing areas including a grassed oval, running track, games courts, an adventure playground, sand pit, jumping pits, shady courtyard and garden areas, a vegetable garden and fruit tree orchard. As well as classroom groups, we have our learning teams, student house groups (siblings are allocated to the same house) and a Junior School Council. The school has four main buildings. All classrooms have air conditioning and interactive screens. Block A houses classrooms, staff areas and the administration offices. Our newest building has classrooms and some small group/office spaces. Block B includes our library, canteen and a multi-purpose room used for indoor physical education, Perceptual Motor Program, drama, visiting performers, and community activities. Block C houses classrooms and specialist rooms. We expect and receive the best from our students in terms of their learning and behaviour. The school’s dedicated and effective staff is strongly committed to helping students achieve personal, behavioural, social and academic success. In terms of learning, the highest priority is placed on the work in English and Mathematics. We also have a range of specialist and extra-curricular programs that we provide. Our specialist teacher-librarian is involved in reading extension programs that support development in literacy. All children are able to develop their artistic abilities through visual arts and music program. Our music program is supported by the Australian Children's Music Foundation. A specialist Physical Education teacher provides lessons for all children as well as the opportunity for students to participate in organised lunch time sporting competitions between the house groups. Auslan is the additional language all students learn at Albion. All children participate in a student wellbeing program that focuses on developing strong connections and a sense of belonging within the school. Our school student leaders participate in programs that help develop their leadership skills. 5114.01 - Albion State School 1999 Grade 1 2F 5114.01 - Albion State School 1999 Grade 1 2F Names Back Row L2R Tyson Stone Michael Nardella Monique Zerni David Kennedy Robert Reynolds Dion Johnson Zayne Duggan 2nd Row L2R Jayde Stanley Malgorzata Wasilewska Julie Rand Timothy McGrath Olivia Moore Peter Horak Hayley Riley Kelly Kennedy Callan Tishler Front Row L2R Teagan Maguire Danield Kindred Dusan Karkovic Nichalos Davie Hannah Gray James Schwencke Lynda Ferrara Tony Tongpoon Emily Folino Absent Krystal Margaritis Principal Mr Joe Vella Teacher Mrs Ann Fabro 5114.02 - Albion State School 2000 T Ball Collection of Digital Photographs Photograph Albion State School 2000 Class Photographs ...The current school, Albion Primary School, No 4265 opened in 1926. 5153.01 - Albion State School 2000 Football Grand Finalists 5153.02 - Albion State School 2000 Grade 1 2E 5153.02 - Albion State School 2000 Grade 1 2E Names Back Row L2R Alisi Faingaanuku Ashley Skew Michael Nardella Julie Rand Tyson Stone Mary Guglielmi Robert Depietro Second Row L2R Jennifer Truong Jayde Stanley Corine Markovic Malgorzata Wasilewska Robert Reynolds Jessica Nedelkovska Annie Lam Carl Schwencke Front L2R Kasey Davis Danielle Williams Joshua Folino Laura Demicoli Cavan Chen Jenny Le Jake Raye Jennifer Williams Tully Tran 5153.03 - Albion State School 2000 Grade 2 3H 5153.03 - Albion State School 2000 Grade 2 3H Names Back Row L2R Cody Mayne Timothy McGrath David Kennedy Simon Kinder Peter Horak Dion Johnson Second Row L2R Aiden Wileman Tiani Megens Monique Zerni Rachel Elliott Stephanie Stronell Kelly Kennedy Tony Tongpoon Front Row L2R Luke Cleland Meyer Teagan Maguire Christopher Dymott Callan Tishlet Helen Ha Michael Dipietro Jame schwencke Emily Folino Roger Cini Absent William Burrows Tiffany Smith 5153.04 - Albion State School 2000 Grade 3 4D 5153.04 - Albion State School 2000 Grade 3 4D Names Back Row L2R Benjamin Milicevic William Raye Jack Wightman Mathew Grima Mitchell Pollard Steven Cameron Shane Quinsee Rafael Protacio Second Row L2R Nikki Durham Miranda Hall Thuy Vu Melissa Kennedy Megan Montague Zayne Duggan Jacquilyn TeRay Dusan Zarkovic Front Row L2R Nichalos Davie Shannan Weeks Minh Le Cassandra Williams Olivia Moore Jade Formosa Shannan Salmon Lynda Ferrara Daniel Kindred 5153.05 - Albion State School 2000 Grade 4 5T 5153.05 - Albion State School 2000 Grade 4 5T Names Back Row L2R Cong Le Adis Husejnovic Troy Maguire Chantelle Noack Kamil Bulinski Dylan Markovic Steven Pucek Second Row L2R Blake Cain Mathew Smith Mathew Tiemes Jilliah Johnson Priya Shah Justin Wemyss Gul Resuloglu Garratt Stone Front Row L2R Samantha Williams Caitlin Tippet Steve Bernacki Adam Stanley Meg MKinnon Helen Milsom Nicholas Rosener Courtney Te Ray Jared DAlfonso Teachers Mrs Jann Turner Mrs Teresa Woods Mrs Betty Batty Mr Gareth Dainton Principal Mr Joe Vella 5153.06 - Albion State School 2000 Grade 5 6H 5153.06 - Albion State School 2000 Grade 5 6H Names Back Row L2R Alison Testa Jarrod Montague Heidi McKinnon Matthew Baker Brody Woodbury Doreen Roberts Second Row L2R Katherine ONeill Bradley Rolfo Benjamin Huynh Sarah Kennedy Lisa Broadwood Ricky Liddy Nicholas Miller Front Row L2R Sara Kindred Gavin Stone Terence Sinclair Mary Nguyen Farisha Zammit Katie Hamilton Damian Stanley Anh Vu Matthew Gauci 5153.07 - Albion State School 2000 Grade 5 6P 5153.07 - Albion State School 2000 Grade 5 6P Names Back Row Troy Strinovic Miki ORegan Kellie Davis Dwayne Brown Binh Nguyen Second Row L2R Samantha Skew Ricky Lyon Jessica James Charly Attard Garry Gath Caterina Viterale Rory Markovic Front Row L2R Sean Ung Matthew Archer Patrick Geoghegan Jimmy Phan Catherine Protacio Brendon Stephens Jennifer Pucek Rebecca Trinh Robert Anderson Teacher Mrs Patricia Porigneaux Mrs Lynn Mahoney Principal Mr Joe Vella 5153.08 - Albion State School 2000 Grade Prep 1X 5153.08 - Albion State School 2000 Grade Prep 1X Names Back Row Jarrod Doherty Ebony Wemyss Nicolle Reynolds Jade Burling Ethan Morgan Jim Murphy Second Row L2R Jack Schofield Julie Ung Jessica Heeps Reece Mayne Anthony Buttiegieg Casey James Amanda Mustafa Kieran Azzopardi Front Row L2R Luke DAlfonso Naomi Truong Jesse Culhane Saamu Melissa Hall Natalie Coburn Nicole Williams Imran Clancy Nasim Jamal David Tran 5153.09 - Albion State School 2000 Whole School Hands Up 5153.10 - Albion State School 2000 House Captains 5153.11 - Albion State School 2000 JSC 5153.12 - Albion State School 2000 Netball Squad Grand Finalists 5153.13 - Albion State School 2000 Newcombe 5153.14 - Albion State School 2000 Whole School 5153.15 - Albion State School 2000 Staff 5153.15 - Albion State School 2000 Staff Names Back Row L2R Valentina Risteska Donna El Daief Ann Fabbro Lorraine Farrugia Second Row L2R Sandra Spurr Jann Turner Adrieene Erwood Gareth Dainton Wayne Haren Anna Xasteroulis Julie Hrovatin Betty Batty Front Row L2R Kathryn Ceballos Lynn Mahoney Susan Carpenter Joe Vella Teresa Woods Angela Paschalidis Sandy Dennis Absent Pat Porigneaux Chris Sortino 5153.16 - Albion State School 2000 T Ballalbion state school, albion primary school, adelaide street, albion
