The photograph, Real Photo Series M 324, shows Geelong No. 2, built by Duncan and Fraser of Adelaide in 1911 in its as-built configuration in Ryrie St with the former Geelong Post Office in the view. Next door to the Post Office is the Telegraph Station. Dated on the basis of a poster next to the Telegraph station advertising a 1920 film by Irene Castle. The full name of the film cannot be read, but starts with "The..." This tram is part of the collection at the Ballarat Tramway Museum. The photograph shows Geelong No. 2, built by Duncan and Fraser of Adelaide in 1911 in its as-built configuration, c1920 at the Wharf terminus, known as the Moorabool Street Pier. The tram line was opened in 1912 and closed in 1940 when the track in Corio St was extended to the Beach terminus. There are a number of horse-drawn vehicles in the view with goods being loaded or unloaded on the ship moored on the right. The tramway was operated by the Melbourne Electric Supply Co. (MESCo). The photograph from the collection of Ken Magor was published in the Sydney Tramway Museum's magazine Trolley Wire in April 1981. The photo caption advises - "The steamship to the right is the Edina, a veteran Port Phillip steamer which was launched in 1854 and was not broken up until 1957." In the photo are Edments, Savoia Cafe, Commercial Bank of Australia, and the T&G building. The photo has been dated between 1935 when the tram was converted and 1939 when the bar neon traffic lights were installed at the intersection. The penel was recovered by the restorer of MESCo/SECV Geelong tram No. 2 and provided information about the paint scheme and layout. The Geelong tramway system closed in March 1956, No. 2 making its last run in January 1956. The body was subsequently sold to Phil Shoppee, a farmer at Murradoc on the Bellarine Peninsula. The farmer had used the tram body as a feed store, with this part placed up against a water tank or similar. This prevented it from being painted over. The panel shows the methodology of securing it to the tram body and the location of the lining and the emblem. The SECV logo or emblem dates from the formation of the SECV in 1921. The panel dates from the 1950s, possibly from a repaint after the side entry gates on the car were replaced by hinged doors in the mid-1950s. The remaining trailers 2 and 3 (after Nos 1 and 4 had been motorised) and a line of Duncan & Fraser tramcars in the depot. The broken paving and heaps of sand suggest that the tram shed is being extended to add roads 3 and 4 to the west. That would date the photo as 1914. Regattas were held on the Barwon River at the terminus of the South tramline which was linked directly to the other suburban destinations, Newtown and West Geelong. The standard fare was 3d cash or, for some shorter "sectional" journeys, pre-paid 2d tickets. One of four bells that would have been fitted to the tram.Demonstrates a conductors communication bell made for use on tramcars. Brass Conductor Communication Bell, consisting of cast frame, bell, striker, bell pull part, one nut to secure the bell to the frame and two rivets securing for the bell pull part. Has the initials "TB" cast in both ends that were used to secure the bell to the roof - possibly indicating the "Tramway Board" manufacture.
