An account of the author's family background & early life, more particularly those events leading to their internment in Tatura, Victoria, Australia during World War 2. The author's parents (author Hermine Wedel, nee Strauss) were of German nationality & practicing as missionaries in New Guinea. Upon the outbreak of WW2, those German nationals were ordered to the coast by the Australian authorities and the men were transported to internment camps in Australia. The women remained behind, reporting regularly to the authorities, until they too were brought to camps in Australia at the end of 1941. They were eventually reunited in a family camp for internees, Camp 3 at Tatura, in 1943. They were released from the camp to work in Australia in 1947 and the family returned to New Guinea in 1949, and eventually went back to Germany. Gisela Koch was a German internee in camp 3. She was given the box while in Camp 3. Her niece, Dr. Silke Hesse donated the item.Rectangular shaped polished wooden jewellery box, rounded edges. Hinged lid, brass hinges. Medium-light brown coloured wood. Dark green velvet lining inner & on base. Underside of lid is padded underneath velvet. Has tray insert, velvet covered also. In 1943 German internees in camp 3 (Victoria) decided to produce theatre productions of their German heritage to familiaize their children with their culture/to keep everyone busy/ interested/ and involved as a community. A comment was made that this exercise was very successful.Kept the German culture alive in the camp. Else-Lore Oertel, with her mother, was a German internee in Camp 3 A as a child, from 1940-1945. Her godmother, another internee, Friedel Dehnel (Tante Fiffi) made the hanging for Else-Lore & wrote out the poem on the back for her.Handmade wooden plywood wall hanging, painted, of sleeping blonde haired baby dressed in light blue laying in a cradle painted dark blue (with red heart) with checked red & white curtains & bird (robin red-breast) atop the curtains. The camp sites today are on private property, and as they were dismantled after the war, and on the closure of the Migrant camp, very little physical evidence remains today.Camp 3 held 1000 internees, Germans, Jews and Italians, including German Lutheran families from New Guinea, German families from Palestine (Templer settlement) and Austrian Jewish refugees. After WW1 the Wilhelma Templer village bought ex WW1 German Armed Forces Brass instruments for their own Brass Band. The Treaty of Versailles forbade Germany from having more than a 10,000 man army thus creating a flood of unwanted instruments with no one having cash to buy them. With the deportation in August 1941 by the British Mandate of most Templers from Palestine to Australia, one of the young bachelors, Gustav Reichert, obtained permission to bring these instruments to Tatura. This he did and, in Camp 3, a band was reformed to entertain members of both internees and often, Camp Authorities. Gustav enjoyed playing the double brass with the Melbourne Templer Brass Band in the 1960-1970's. The above instruments have semi-rotary valves, as traditionally French Horns do, unlike most Anglosaxon bands, where piston valves are used almost exclusively. Yet in German the name Piston is commonly used for cornet. Though battered, these instruments are all still serviceable for their intended use, some more so than others. Their canvas carry bags offered little protection. The group comprised 1 double bass, 1 Euphonium, 1 valve bass trombone, all in C, 3 baritones in Bb (German tenor horns), 3 cornets in Bb, 1 soprano cornet in Eb, in all 11 instruments.
