This is a photo of a print produced on p133 of the 12.6.1869 issue of the Illustrated Australian News. It appears to have been sourced because it represents one of the earliest known representations of the Snowy River mouth. An early settlement near the mouth of the Snowy is shown here by a small clutch of huts. Later, the township of Marlo developed in this location, along with the township of Orbost upstream on the Snowy River. Significantly, the mouth of the Snowy River as shown in this image appears to be represented in the back right-hand corner of the image. This photograph is significant because it is shows one of the earliest representations of the mouth of the Snowy River (1960s). The Brodribb River is an tributary of the Snowy River, and runs into the Snowy River near Marlo in East Gippsland. Both of these rivers have floods which spill over their banks onto a large floodplain. Floods are always significant events. These photos show the impact on transport during a flood event. These photos are significant because they show the effect of a flood on everyday lives, in this case, on transport. Built by W. G. Allen & Sons (Tipton) Ltd., Tipton, Staffordshire, England. This vehicle was used on the construction of dams, etc., and the Jindivick tunnel at Tarago in Gippsland for the state Rivers & Water Supply Commission of Victoria. The small wheel located on the side ran up a suitably located ramp automatically tipping the hopper and emptying the contents.
