This child's green, silk, party dress was worn by Sylvia Marriott in 1927. The Marriott family were early settlers in the Moorabbin ShireMembers of the Marriott family arrived in Port Phillip in 1857. However it was John and Jane Marriott who in 1876, (after toiling hard since their arrival in1871, for very little gain), first leased, then purchased in 1882, 30 acres with a four-roomed house in East Boundary Road, in the area then called East Brighton. (Now known as East Bentleigh). The land they purchased had previously been a part of the 1841 Dendy Special Survey. Over the following years, John and his four sons with hard work and determination became prosperous vegetable growers and purchased further land in the area. Following John's retirement and subsequent death in 1903, the land was passed to his sons, and then onto the Marriott grandchildren. The hat has been simply made with a plain crown for the child's day-to-day use. Leanne and Janette were the twin daughters of Reginald and Margaret Wilson. Reginald was a baker in Linton (the last baker to work from the former Nicol bakery in Sussex Street). The girls were born on 31st March 1965 and baptised 2nd May 1965. Baptism record Nos.: 852 & 853. School records show that the girls started school at Linton February 1970 before transferring to Macedon at the end of that year. In note from Leslie Cairns (née Hart) dated 4 November 2019: "My mum and dad spent quite some time at that bakery. Mum - Maisie Hart - used to enjoy working in the shop among the very special food, whilst Dad - Bill Hart - loved looking after the children especially the twin girls. They were very sad when the owners, Reg and Marg Wilson bought a bakery in Morowa - inland from Geraldton in West Australia. Competition from large bread companies was ruining their business. Bodice of jacket has 8 cm vertical lace inserts next to the edge of the bands, continuing over the shoulders and down the back of the bodice to the waist. From the waistline is an ungathered skirt widening slightly at the hem. Button hooks were used to fastens buttons on boots and long gloves. It is a tool used for the closing of shoes, gloves or other apparel that uses buttons as fasteners. The steel hook end is inserted through the buttonhole to capture the button by the shank and draw it through the opening. This hook is most likely to have been used to do up bootsWomen and young girls generally wore boots that were either front laced or side buttoned, particularly in the period from the 1870s . Buttonhooks were needed to do up the buttons on buttoned boots and were used by poking the metal hook through the buttonhole, grabbing the button and pulling it through the eyelet.
