Coloured Photograph, Members of the first girls' B&QAGS rowing crew 1979
... Members of the first girls' B&QAGS rowing crew 1979...girls ...Two girls' rowing crews were noted in 1979 in The Ballarat Grammarian 1978-79. The first crew won the Ballarat regatta but was disqualified for not being affiliated to the V.W.R.A. The seconds girls' crew, the ninth boys' crew, and the tenth boys' crew were coached by senior oarsmen due to the shortage of coaches. The ninth crew was coached by M. Short, and the tenth crew was coached by P. Gray. The girls' seconds crew was coached by G. Forsyth and T. Jeffrey. T. Jeffrey was also Captain of Boats 1979. Prior to the commencement of term 1 a row-a-thon was conducted spanning one week and 200kms up the Murray and Darling Rivers. As a result enough money was raised to buy a racing shell (Boomalacka II) and a training shell (Beckworth III). The row-a-thon also provided perfect pre-season training.1979 appears to be the first year that a girls rowing crew was formed at B&QAGS. Jill Douglass wrote "1st Crew Rowing 1979 for the first time in the history of rowing at BQAGS and, for any Ballarat School - a girls' crew has competed in major regattas in Victoria. The crew Jane Harris (bow), Annabel Meek, Ruth Hobson, Jill Douglass (stroke) and Tanya Hunt (cox) trained for many weeks with the help and experience of Mr. A. A. Patterson. In the Ballarat Regatta on Lake Wendouree, on 10th March, the crew rowed in the Ladies' Novice four event and won. But disappointingly, they did not receive the trophies as the crew wasn't affiliated with the Victorian Women's Rowing Association. The crew also rowed at Scotch Mercantile on March 24th and though made it convincingly to the final, only managed to come third. The girls were looking forward to rowing, by invitation, in the Tenth's race in the Head of the Lake, but because some of the other schools weren't keen on them rowing against boys, they weren't able to compete. Next year, though, Mr. Patterson and Mr. Meyer hope to organise a Girls' Race with the other schools, which would be a major advance in the development of girls' rowing in Ballarat.Informal coloured unmounted photograph of five girls in brown shorts and yellow sports shirts with rowing shed and Lake Wendouree in backgroundVerso: Handwritten in blue biro.
