In October, 2004, Bendigo Mining received Victorian government approval to start constructing the first stage of its historic Bendigo Goldfield redevelopment. The Victorian government approved the expansion of the company's Carshalton mine site from where the first stage of gold production is planned to commence. Bendigo Mining managing director, Doug Buerger said the approvals program was on track with only the Federal Department of Environment and Heritage approval pending for the site expansion. Mr Buerger said the approval would allow the mine to expand its operations and put infrastructure in place to move into commercial gold production. He said the green light from the Victorian Government capped off a successful year for Bendigo Mining in which the feasibility study was completed and the company raised $115 million to go into production. Gill Reef is a high-grade gold reef located within the Bendigo Goldfield, specifically on the Garden Gully line of reef. In the mid-2000s, Bendigo Mining planned to undertake trial mining and processing of ore from this reef to restart gold production in the region. While it showed promising indicators, the success of commercial production depended on the trial results and the economics of the time. Location: The Gill Reef is part of the broader Bendigo Goldfield and is located on the Garden Gully line of reef. Geology: It is a quartz reef with an estimated grade of 10–15 g/t gold. News reports from 2008 also describe it as a high-grade reef with promising signs of gold. SOUTH FREDERICK THE GREAT MINE Location Unreserved Crown Land along the southern boundary of Sebastian School, east of Three Chain Road, Frederick the Great/Carshalton Reef, Sebastian Map Reference Raywood 1:25000 - BV488.447 Mine site: Capped shaft still surrounded by its mullock paddock. At the base of the paddock on the northern side is a concrete winding engine foundation measuring 8 by 4 feet, and standing 2 feet high. The foundation has ¾-inch mounting bolts. Battery site 70 metres to the west of the mine site are the concrete foundations of a 10head battery. The foundations measure 16 by 11 feet, and stand 4 feet high. Part of the battery's loading ramp still survives, and on the eastern side of the battery foundations is a large concrete engine foundation. Near this engine foundation is a 3 foot square concrete pad, which still retains a circular impression. Presumably this was a stand for a gas producer cylinder. Located between the battery and the mine site is a rubbish dump which contains sections of an iron stack, and perhaps the remains of the gas producer cylinder. New Bendigo Gold Project The Bendigo goldfield is centred on the urban area of Bendigo (population approximately 60 000) in central Victoria, 130 km north west of Melbourne, Australia. Gold was discovered at Bendigo in 1851 and production continued through to 1954. The Bendigo goldfield is the second largest goldfield in total gold produced in Australia, after Kalgoorlie's Golden Mile with a total production of 22 million oz. The geology of the Bendigo Field consists of a series of tightly folded, interbedded sandstone and shale sediments. Within the sediments the gold mineralisation is hosted in quartz reefs or ribbons closely associated with anticline axes and reverse faulting.
