Coffee Palaces were developed throughout Australia with the backing of the Temperance Movement as an alternative venue to pubs in the late 19th century. Two Coffee Palaces identified in Wodonga in the early days were the Railway Coffee Palace and the Wodonga Coffee Palace. In 1908 Wodonga Coffee Palace was advertised for sale, having 15 rooms, a 15 stall stable and feed-room. In 1921 Wodonga Coffee Palace was taken over by Julia Ronan who had successfully conducted the dining rooms at the Wodonga Sale-yards for 15 years. The building of the Hume Weir was in progress and many of the workers boarded at the Coffee Palace. In 1936 Wodonga Coffee Palace became “Glenburnie” Guest House. Charles Plowright operated the Western Hotel on the corner of Timor and Kepler Streets from 1910 until around 1919. It was built in 1869 by William O’Brien, having been designed by Andrew Kerr. It was a staging place for the Cobb & Co Coaches. A common commercial product with which many people could identify. The Western Hotel is a common Warrnambool landmark built around 1869, it was one of the earliest hotels and operates to this day. Plain white soup bowl with flat rim. The Hygeienic Cafe was conducted by Mrs. H. Bartlett in the late 1930's. It was popular with farmers who patronised it on market days. Many wedding receptions were held in this cafe It was sited near Blane's Newsagency in Murray St.One of very few peices of china from this popular Colac cafe remaining in existance. The Ozone Hotel was formerly the Grand Ozone Coffee Palace which was erected in 1890 at a cost of around ten thousand pounds. Coffee Palaces were temperance hotels which were popular in the latter part of the 19th century which offered recreation and superior accommodation. The coffee palace operated until 1915 and was then closed before re-opening in 1920 as Hotels Mansions. It had major renovations including a large theatre area. February 23rd 1929 saw the most spectacular fire in Warrnambool's history when the Hotel mansions was burnt to the ground. Evelyn O'Brien was granted a temporary licence and in September 1930 she was given permission to rebuild. The new hotel named Hotel Warrnambool was opened in March 1931. Dad & Dave Cafe was located in Pall Mall Charing Cross Bendigo. It was opened by dairy farmer and milk bar owner Les McClure in 1939. His Four'n Twenty meat pies were initially made in Bendigo in 1947. McClure sold his Four'n Twenty Pie's Pty. Gillies Pies was started by three brothers from Charlton, in central Victoria, Les, Alan and Norm Gillies who left their farm after the 1940s drought and headed to Bendigo to start anew. From their first small bakery in Mitchell Street, the brothers eventually went on to employ about 200 people with wholesale and retail locations spreading across the state and distribution including Melbourne.A small bowl 14 centimetres diameter, three centimetres high and a dinner plate 24 centimetres diameter, three centimetres high. This china jug has been made in England by Grindley Hotel Ware. The Grindley company that manufactured earthenware and ironstone items was founded in 1880 by William Grindley and was initially based in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent, England. The jug has had a red stamp added so that it could be used at the Criterion Hotel in Warrnambool and identified as the hotel property. The jug was used during the licenseeship of Theresa Lynch. The Criterion Hotel was situated on the western side of Kepler Street near Lava Street, Warrnambool. It opened in 1872 with the first licensee, John Tate. In the 1920s there were extensive renovations to the hotel in the Art Deco style. Theresa Lynch was the licensee from 1919 to 1926. In 1922 she bought the hotel and sold it to Harry McGennan in 1926. In 2006 the Criterion Hotel was closed and it was partially destroyed by fire in 2010 and later completely demolished. This jug is of interest as a 1920s souvenir of the Criterion Hotel, Warrnambool that closed in 2006. This hotel was a prominent one in Warrnambool, known in the 1990s for its promotion of live rock music. This is a white china jug with a circular base slightly tapering to an open top with a spout and handle. On the side of the jug there is a red stamp in the shape of a belt with red lettering. This plate comes from the Hotel Mansions in Warrnambool. This building was opened in 1890 as the Grand Ozone Coffee Palace (a temperance hotel) and was at the corner of Koroit and Kepler Streets in Warrnambool. It was built by a company of local businessmen and leased out. In 1891 the Coffee Palace was granted a wine licence. In 1895 Thomas Randall was the proprietor of the building and it was re-named the Ozone Hotel. The building was closed in 1915 and re-opened in 1920 as the Hotel Mansions. In 1923 the Hotel Mansions became a fully-licensed hotel. In 1929 it was destroyed by fire and the present day Hotel Warrnambool was built on the site. This plate is of considerable significance because it is one of the few items we have from the Hotel Mansions in Warrnambool. The Grand Ozone Coffee Palace/Ozone Hotel/Hotel Mansions was the grandest building ever erected in Warrnambool. Its destruction by fire was a major loss to the city. This is a white plate made of vitrified china (bread and butter plate size). It has a charcoal-black rim around the outer edge and a black monogram and scroll on the outer edge of the plate. There are a couple of small stains on the upper part of the plate and on the base. There is information on the maker and supplier on the base as well as a crown symbol.‘H.M. 'When the Victorian railways took over management of the Chalet from 1 october 1924, they ran their dining room and cafe in similar fashion to the dining cars on their trains and refreshment rooms on their stations, using the same ceramic hotel-ware and electro plated nickel silverware (EPNS), all made to order items that are clearly idenitified by the distinctive 'VR' monogram. . ..The Chalet Collecton also incudes items of ceramic stoneware... and these too interpret the function and role of the dining room. The ceramic items items were generally manufactured by 'Grindley' or 'Grafton'... Ceramic ware used at the Chalet from the 1920's to the 1950's had a black VR monogram or badge and was the same crockery used in th VR dining and buffet cars. St. Anns College had its beginnings in the arrival in May 1872 of a group of nuns from Ireland. They were the third group of Sisters of Mercy to come to Victoria. The Warrnambool nuns worked hard to establish a school and orphanage for the socially disadvantaged children of the district. They purchased Wyton from Captain Ardlie that year and also Amhurst later on. The Nazareth sisters of Ballarat took over the orphanage in the late 1880's and moved the children to Ballarat but the school continued to develop an expanding curriculum. A chapel was built in 1887 and a school wing in 1906. They survived on tuition fees and the generosity of benefactors though the early and middle part of the 20th century including a large bequest by Mrs Vera Kenna in the 1960's. Boarders were a regular part of convent life until the 1970's which is probably the source of this plate. St Ann's College was combined with St Joseph's CBC college as Emmanuel College and operates today as the largest Catholic college in the district.This has significance as it is associated with one of the longest running schools in the district and hence would have a connection to many Warrnambool people as well as district people who boarded at the college.White bowl, with green and yellow stripe around edge and emblem.
