Three men are dressed in suits, ties and hats and the remaining 20 are in full tramway (MTOC or interim Tramway Board) uniform with caps, some wearing the large pins used by conductors. As the MTOC only provided full uniforms to its traffic staff from 1901, the photograph can be dated between 1901 and the early 1920s, when the new Tramways Board (M&MTB) supplied a different uniform and cap. Two of the men in suits are the line manager and revenue clerk. There are many similar staff photos from this era which suggests they were initiated by MTOC. One man, presumably the depot master, is dressed in a suit, tie and hat. The other 11 are in full tramway (MTOC) uniform with caps, two wearing the large pins used by conductors. As the MTOC only provided full uniforms to its traffic staff from 1901, this photograph can be dated between 1901 and 1916 when MTOC ceased, not 1895. The location was probably the Victoria Bridge car house (depot) in Victoria Street, North Richmond just west of the Yarra River, not a workshop. The usual flat fare for adults was three pennies, pronounced thrippence, not tuppence which was two pennies. There are many similar staff photos from this era which suggests they were initiated by MTOC. Would have allowed free travel when in uniform to and from work. Used possibly from mid 1910's when the Tramway Board was formed until it was replaced by the MMTB in 1921 or when a different identification system was implemented. Most likely made by Stokes and Sons - possible imprint covered by the leather part.Demonstrates the method of identifying cable tram employees. Round pressed brass badge with the words "Gripman" pressed into the centre of the badge around the top portion of the badge, the letters "C13H. Has a nickel-plated finish with the Tramways Board logo on the lower part of the badge. On the rear of the badge, two metal lugs have been soldered onto the badge and a two-piece leather strap with a buttonhole cut into it to enable it to be worn on a uniform. Donated by Betty (daughter - aged 90) and Cheryl Williams (grand daughter) of Daniel. Reported to have been the first driver leaving the then new Camberwell depot. Born in Avoch Scotland, was a police constable there, before emigrating to Melbourne. Was a cable tram Gripman in the Albert Park Area. Became an electric tram driver, then signalman at St Kilda Junction and trained as an inspector, but did not like the green uniform. Ran in the Stawell Gift of 1925 (injured foot during the race), was a Navigator on Transport RAF/RAAF flights during WW2. War memorabilia to the War Memorial Canberra.
