After his mother dies, Marco, a gifted violinist, has to make his own way in the world, eventually setting out to find the sister who left with the gypsy band. Along the way he's helped by a series of kind people, and the book follows his growth from a homeless, penniless boy into a young man who repays the kindness shown to him.
