Summary
Folle-Farine is the child of Reine, who fled her father, Claudis, to live among Gypsies and died giving birth. Claudis, a miller, resents the child and makes her a slave at his mill. The townspeople treat her with the same contempt, but she resists. She then meets a starving painter living in a tower, helps him and falls in love with him, but he cares only about his art. In the novel, she sells her body so that her beloved can become famous. He is so egotistical that he barely notices what it costs her, and the story ends tragically.
