The item is an end panel from the box section of a "SUN' Seed & Fertilizer Drill. It was manufactured by H.V. McKay Pty. Ltd. at their agricultural machinery manufacturing plant in Sunshine Victoria. The date of manufacture is estimated to be somewhere between 1921 and 1930 because of the imprint H.V. McKay Pty. Ltd. According to the Museum Metadata Exchange (http://museumex.org/oai/mv/2749) the Sunshine Harvester Works was reformed as H.V. McKay Pty. Ltd. in 1921 and in 1930 it became H.V. McKay Massey Harris Pty. Ltd after a merger with the Canadian farm machinery manufacturer Massey Harris. The two events in 1921 and in 1930 are also confirmed by Churchward, M. (2006) at (http://collections.museumvictoria.com.au/articles/2010).This early 20th century item is a relic of the agricultural machinery manufacturing past of Sunshine Victoria. The company started by H. V. McKay no longer exists and neither do the subsequent manufacturing companies H.V. McKay Massey Harris Pty. Ltd., and the later Massey Ferguson (Aust.) Limited. Spanners are used to tighten nuts of different sizes. These spanners are large and were used on larger items eg. H.V. McKay machinery. Used by residents of the Kiewa Valley.Both spanners are straight and made of steel. The 'H.V. McKay' spanner has '824' on the back (at the 'knob' end) and has a 'knob' at one end. The other spanner has the same type of opening at each end (no knob) and has embossed '55A' on one side at one end.H. V. The first successful stripper harvestor ,a Nicholson & Morrow harvestor invented by James Morrow appeared at the Victorian Government trial at Dookie Experimental farm on Dec 27th 1883. Although the stripper harvestor was being manufactured in small numbers by the mid 1800's it did not take over from the tripper until 1904. Hugh McKay soon became the most successful manufacturer of stripper harvestors under the "Sunshine " name and by 1940 over 40,000 harvestors had been produced.This 1916 H.V. This book/magazine is a record of the company's tasks in WW11. It acknowledges the "debt owed to the armed forces involvement and role in defeating the enemy". The Australian operations of this company were originally founded by Hugh V. McKay in the 1890s. In 1906, H.V. McKay moved his manufacturing operations from Ballarat to Braybrook Junction (later Sunshine) on the western outskirts of Melbourne. In 1921 the company became H.V. McKay Pty Ltd. In 1930 it merged with the Australian operations of the Canadian agricultural implement and tractor manufacturer Massey Harris, to become H.V. McKay Massey Harris Pty Ltd. Throughout World War II H.V. McKay Massey Harris exported over 20,000 Sunshine drills, disc harrows and binders to England to facilitate the increase in food production. Rupertswood Mansion was the Sunbury residence of the Clarke family from 1874 until 1922 when H.V.McKay of Sunshine Harvester fame bought it from Hon. W.L. Russell Clarke in 1922. After the death of H.V.McKay in 1926, it was purchased by W. Naughton who then sold the mansion and 700 acres of land to the Salesian Fathers, who are the present owners. Used at School of mines and industries Ballarat As H.V. McKay's Sunshine Harvester business expanded there was a requirement for a school to train the company's apprentices. In 1911, H.V. McKay wrote to the Victoria Cabinet offering 2,000 pounds and 4 1/2 acres of land in Derby Rd for a technical school, On the 7th July 1913, the new Sunshine Technical School opened with a wooded administration building with six class rooms and a large galvanised iron workshop for the trade apprentices. Mr George Baxter was appointed principal with assistant teachers, A.J. Dunlop (Maths & English), W.W. Anderson (Art) & H.B. Ernest (Maths & Science). Seventy students were enrolled in the first year of which 44 were apprentices from the Harvester Works. During the First World War Years (1914 - 1918) there was a difficulties with staffing and enrollments. The school was also used to provide vocational training for wounded returned soldiers. The grand building is Rupertswood Mansion which was the Sunbury home of the Clarke family. The foundation stone was laid29th August 1874 by Mrs. W.J. Clarke the first wife of W.J.Clarke. The property along with the Clarke family have been interwoven with Sunbury's history over the decades and remained in the Clarke family until 1922 when H.V. McKay of Sunshine Harvester fame purchased the property. The Salesian Fathers purchased it in 1927 and since that time the property has been a school. Many important events have taken place in Sunbury within the Rupertswood grounds over the years. They were erected there in 1922 and were made at H.V.McKay's Sunshine Harvester foundry, at Sunshine. H.V McKay was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Sunbury. Originally the gates opened onto Stawell Street, which ran at an angle between O'Shanassy and Barkly Streets. Apart from a small area leading to the Memorial Hall the rest of Stawell Street has been incorporated in the Village Green in Sunbury.The gates were restored and erected on their original site in 2000. The H.V. McKay factory—formally known as the Sunshine Harvester Works, was a landmark of Australian industrial history and a cornerstone of Sunshine, Victoria’s development. Founded by Hugh Victor McKay, inventor of the Sunshine Harvester, which revolutionized wheat harvesting in Australia. Originally based in Ballarat, McKay moved operations to Braybrook Junction in 1906, renaming it Sunshine Harvester Works after his flagship product. It appears the Sunshine & District Historical Society had these items on display for the purpose of seeking further information. Further research found Cyril Henry "Hugo" Buckingham was a notable figure within the H.V. McKay Sunshine Harvester Works, a machinist by trade, he was remembered for his role in keeping the massive factory running smoothly. He was a keen painter, poetry writer and a regular contributor for the Sunshine Advocate. Many of his pieces of art and poetry appeared in The Sunshine Harvester Works Social & Welfare Association Exhibition of Artcraft's & Hobbies, a regular exhibition held in Sunshine, Victoria.5038.01 - Making Eyes C.H.
