Hans Knorr (1915-1988) was a sculptor in bronze, wood, stone and mixed media - many of which were commissioned for churches. Hans was trained as a cabinet maker in Germany. Following internment in Victoria during world War II, he married author Hilde Dent in 1948, decided to remain in Australia and earned international acclaim as a sculptor. In 1961, he opened his own gallery, the Emerald Gallery in Emerald, which he ran for many years. Hilde Knorr (1917 – 2009) Descended from English and Scottish pioneers of the Latrobe Valley, Hilde Knörr grew up in the Moe-Warragul district, then studied music in Melbourne. She married the Bavarian-born sculptor, Hans Knörr, and began writing articles and short stories when her children were small. She published novels, short fiction, biography and poetry. She also published the non-fiction works Religious Art in Australia (1967) and Merriang: An Early Victorian Homestead (1981), a property at Myrtleford, Victoria, where Knörr had resided. In 1948 he held his first exhibition and by the late 1950s was receiving commissions. In 1949 the Knorr family moved to Monbulk Road, Emerald, where Hans Knorr opened his sculpture gallery in 1961. He died in 1988. He died in 1988. The steel and glass sculpture was donated to Emerald Museum by Hans Knorr's widow, Hilde, a prominent author. The glass came from insulators on Emerald's first telephone lines.
